The ITF has released the following statement relating to umpiring decisions during the 2018 US Open Women’s final:

“Carlos Ramos is one of the most experienced and respected umpires in tennis. Mr. Ramos’ decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules and were re-affirmed by the US Open’s decision to fine Serena Williams for the three offences.”

“It is understandable that this high profile and regrettable incident should provoke debate. At the same time, it is important to remember that Mr. Ramos undertook his duties as an official according to the relevant rule book and acted at all times with professionalism and integrity.”

Umpires may boycott Serena's matches
:

Umpires are considering refusing to officiate matches involving Serena Williams, such is the level of discontent over the treatment of Carlos Ramos during and after the US Open final.

The WTA and United States Tennis Association (USTA) have backed Williams’s claims of sexism after she was given a game penalty for her behaviour during her straight-sets defeat by Naomi Osaka, of Japan, on Saturday.

This has further riled some umpires, who were already unhappy with the haphazard organisation of this year’s US Open

Serena did say that Ramos would never chair one of her matches again, didn't she? Careful what you wish for.

Actually, a bigger protest would be to request her matches. The umpires need to be empowered. The players have had their run of doing whatever they please for long enough. Empowered umpires with a mandate to enforce all rules no matter how big the star.

The USTA fined her they only support her when it makes them look good, the WTA can't condemn her because she's their biggest star attraction in their Tour. Honestly, both of them were at fault. Does anyone remember Tipsarevic going off his head at an umpire at the AO one year to the extent he halted play for about 10 minutes. Pennetta even got away with flipping the finger at the ump in a Fed Cup match. Honestly, in a Slam final, the ump should stay out of it or at least give her a warning before he docked her a game penalty. If the rules of umpiring aren't applied to every match on every occasion then there's a flawed system there.

Are you serious? She had 2 warnings already prior to the game penalty. Are players supposed to get unlimited warnings for different code violations? So a player should be able to break a racquet, verbally abuse the umpire, receiving coaching, yelling at the opposing player's box, verbally abuse their opponent, the linespeople and have no repercussions?

Ramos is retiring from umpiring this year, according to one poster, so she won't have Carlos to kick around anymore.

1. Coaching violation = $20,000
2. Racquet abuse = $20,000
3. Verbal abuse = $20,000

Serena should be fined $60,000

Serena is a calm and gentle, patient parent.

As a struggling black mother raising a daughter with no outside help, she should be shown way more respect.
