ITF Tennis Number on USTA Profile (NTRP to stay)

Maybe USTA will put the WTN numbers right on the printed League score sheets where NTRP is today. That way people can just know ahead of time who will win and not bother with the match. I mean, most of us are just here for the beer anyway. Or unscrupulous captains can sneak a peek before the match and make last-minute changes based on the numbers (rather than just based on personal opinion, which is what such captains already do).

I like UTR the best. My UTR is like 50% higher than either my TennisRecord or NTRP.

(Good chance my WTN is going to become my new favorite since it might be the biggest number of all!)

  • ITF World Tennis Number and USTA NTRP operate using two, distinct algorithms.
  • The match results that make up a player’s Computer Rated (C) USTA NTRP rating and ITF World Tennis Number will not always be the same.
  • ITF World Tennis Number has a separate singles and doubles rating, while USTA NTRP takes singles and doubles results into account for a single rating.
  • USTA NTRP and ITF World Tennis Number handle mixed doubles matches differently.
  • ITF World Tennis Number ratings are calculated and published once per week, whereas USTA NTRP is published once per year.

One more difference is that WTN was initially advertised to have a transparent algorithm where is NTRP is purposefully obfuscated. I haven't seen anything new saying WTN will be open and transparent so maybe they changed their minds on that.

If you absolutely can't wait to get your number as soon as possible, you can sign up for a free LTA account (UK USTA) and get your WTN number there. It didn't pull any of my USTA matches and I self rated at 21.4.

My main takeaway from this is they are trying to squash UTR. The widget is a clear ripoff of UTR.

This really shows how much the USTA fears UTR. The ITF number will either fail or eliminate the need for UTR. It is likely that UTR will become irrelevant as the USTA now controls all the moving parts of junior development and there is no need for UTR to exist.

WTF do the need a WTN when they already have NTRP, which already goes up to 7.0 to encompass pros. NTRP has a built-in advantage over the competition, including vs UTR, because more people are familiar with it.

Interesting what UTR's response will be. @schmke?
UTR has been around longer than WTN obviously and has a more established foothold among juniors and collegiate players and that whole ecosystem. UTR has branched out beyond just calculating ratings and now runs events and flex leagues and has a foothold there that I don't think will just disappear and they will continue to run events.

What will be interesting is what happens around results that are included in each rating. UTR includes results from USTA events, but the USTA hasn't (to my knowledge) included results from UTR events/leagues in any of their ratings. Presumably this means WTN won't include results from UTR events/leagues either, so as long as UTR continues to include USTA results in their rating, it could be argued that UTR will be the more completed and "universal" rating, and that may appeal to some constituents (college coaches, tournament directors, etc.) and keep UTR in an advantageous position. Or perhaps UTR does decide to provide their results to the USTA/ITF, but that is their leverage point so I doubt it.

Depends on which "people". USTA League and tournament players? Sure, you are right. Juniors and collegiate players? Nope. Pros or adult age group tournament players? Nope.

The USTA doesn't calculate NTRP ratings for any of these (they failed with Junior NTRP where they tried, the results aren't even fed into the NTRP system for college/pro/age group tournaments) and has never positioned NTRP as a system for anything other than level based play for leagues/tournaments. Because of this, the "up to 7.0" really has no meaning as we don't really know if that scale would actually make sense. There were exceedingly few 2021 year-end 5.5s, only a handful of 6.0s, and do we really know Novak, Rafa, and Medvedev are only "1.0" better than the 6.0s the system has?

Could NTRP be used in these other areas? Sure, but it appears no effort is being made to make that happen.
