Talking of joke draws. All the big 3 have joke draws these days in their slam wins. Who exactly can challenge Djokovic in Australia? Nadal in Paris? Fed or Djokovic in Wimbledon?
:-D
That's a rash statement to make. Djokovic lost to Chung and Istomin in Australia 2017 & 2018.

Hate to burst your bubble, but doesn't this mean that Nadal hasn't really been able to hold onto number 1 for that long if he reached it in 9 separate seasons and only has 196 weeks?
Hate to burst the fanboy bubble, but he was injured like what... 50 times?

"Only" 196 weeks?

Look up ONLY in the dictionary. Does not mean what you believe it means...

If 196 is ONLY then RF was no 1 for...

... 310-196 = 114 weeks. Coz the other weeks don't count... according to you.

The big joke is that people still harp on about Rafa losing to Sod at RG 1O years ago but have already forgotten that Djokovic lost to Chung and Istomin at his most successful slam 1-2 years ago!

2011 was the last year that Rafa has played a full season including 2019, apart from 2015. The rest of the time he's been out with injury for months yet he's managed to hold the top 2 ranking in all but 1 of those years. You should all be thanking your lucky stars that Rafa has been injured that often.

I think Rafa has only played a full season once since 2011 and that was 2015. The rest of the time he's been out with injury for months yet he's managed to hold the top 2 ranking in all but 1 of those years. You should all be thanking your lucky stars that Rafa has been injured that often.
... otherwise he'd have more than 20 slams...

... already 2-3 years ago.

RF fans should worship at the altar of Rafa's knees, thank them.

Can't beat Federer or Djokovic, can't win anything outside of clay unless he has a joke draw (and/or Federer/Djokovic don't play like in Canada). Say hello to the "best" player on the planet. Nadal is as much of a worthy no 1 as in 2017.
LOL a win is a win, it´s not Nadal´s fault that Federer and Djokovic lose in earlier rounds. You Nadal haters always bring up that logic that he has a joke draw, etc. Be a tennis fan and accept every win

Yeah it was CLEARLY us. No-one has ever mentioned Federer winning a Slam by beating Gonzalez in the final. No-one. You guys are something else.

I mean who cares that Gonzalez lost 9 games to Nadal in the QF of that tournament.

One would automatically assume this on a tennis thread...

... But one would be wrong.

Nadal is playing Davis cup, Paris and WTF.
So to hold #1, Nadal NEEDS to do well in Paris/WTF.
If he underperforms relative to Novak in these tournaments, his #1 will be shortlived.

Rafael Nadal will return to ATP #1 after the Paris Masters. In doing so, he will match Roger Federer's record of 9 seasons holding #1 at some point during that season.

Vamos party thread?

Nadal has been best player for past three years so it is right in 2 of last 3 years he ends as No.1. That being said im not that fussed, still too busy celebrating UO 2019. No.1 a nice bonus but i was not that fussed about it. Majors what count...2 more to get and it looks certain now.

Keep in mind that Djokovic has virtually nothing to defend at Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo, so the trajectory for him is all up at the start of next year aside from the Australian Open which is clearly his best Slam.
So Novak will be a heavy favorite for #1 in 2020 as well.

ONLY if he wins AO...

And at age 32 that is not a shoe-in anymore, regardless how good he was this year.

I agree. It's all about AO. If Novak does NOT win the AO 2020, he is in trouble as it relates to the breaking the slam record. Especially if Nadal or Fed win.

That being said, Novak at AO is only 2nd to Nadal at F.O in terms of inevitability. So unless we have a peak Stanimal or Novak gets injured, I think he will win AO 2020.

The F.O 2020 will be crucial next year. Pressure will be on Nadal to win, because if Rafa doesn't it will be a blow for Spaniard as it relates to the slam record. The 2020 slams are critical, they decide the GOAT slam record race.
I think by end of 2020 we would know who will likely be the slam record holder.

TBH i think Djokovic may be done at slams. Losing to Next Gen as often as he does is a bad sign. Its better to lose to peers like Nadal and Federer but be dominant over younger players than other way round.

Djokovic has far less aura than Nadal with the younger players and i think its going to be very hard for him.

AO will be interesting. Would love Nadal to start year off winning it but he traditionally is never quite at his best in january and Medvedev may ride his momentum and win in australia. Then have a 12 month let down.

Federer is not as good as Nadal on HC. Djokovic Nadal and Sampras 3 best on HC i have seen
That's laughable :D Fed has won much more than Nadal on hardcourts.Spare me with since peak Nadal and all that kind of bias found only in your universe. You are making a confusion between a matchup between 2 players and their overall greatness on a particular surface.Fanboi, tennis it's about titles not your cherry picked prime/peak periods.

Nadal wont have much pressure at FO as he is so far ahead of any player there even if he fails to win he knows he could still win 2 more there.

Federer will never win a Major again. That is now a certainty. Djokovic is the one who now is the most interesting case. Repeated losses to Next Gen players is a bad sign and i agree for him everything rests on AO.

Sorry Federer did not do much on HC post 2008 compared to Nadal and Djokovic. The fact federer dominated Hewitt and Roddick doesnt mean he was better than Djokovic and Nadal. 0 USOs is a damning reality post 2008 for a player such as Federer. Inexcusable if i am honest.

Congrats to Nadal fans! See I remember the dismay a lot of Nadal fans had on here during 2015/2016 (I was here during those times under a different name, asked the mods to delete my previous profile) and kudos for you lot for sticking with Nadal, real fans stick with their player even through tough times. Sames goes for Djokovic fans and Federer fans. You all might bicker but at least you have one thing in common, loyal fanbases.

Do you realize Djokovic won 4 of the last 6 slams?

Good post. But the next Gen still have NOT proven the capability to beat Novak in slams.
The only way to beat Novak, outside of clay, is to be peak Stanimal. Wawrinka is TRULY Novak's KRYPTONITE, as he (and only he) can beat a peak Novak in non clay slams.
Other than that, no one seems to be able to beat Novak in non clay slams, which is why Djoker has won 4 of the last 6 slams. He might have had 5 if Wawrinka had NOT shown up.

IMO - Djokovic will be the favorite in all slams except the French Open. I don't expect the next gen to beat him in slams. And Wawrinka will be too old next year.

This amazing feat illustrates the true magnificence of the rusty, epic, peak, humble, modest, moral golden Bull. ONLY Bull could "regain" a ranking of which he was already the rightful holder! Vamos!

His/her claim that 2019 was a better year for Nadal than 2013 looks nothing compared to this BS. :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Federer and Djokovic are the greatest hard court players, followed by Pete.Djokovic is 3-3 at the USO with Federer with Fed holding MP in 5 of their encounters .That tells all you need to know. All titles in all periods matter.

The last time Nadal won the AO was in 2009, so according to your logic he shouldn't be considered that good on hardcourts because of this particular tournament.Awesome logic. We can play this game until "forever".

Djokovic still has great chances to get the YE#1 though. This is what matters.
His chances have flown out the window with his Shanghai loss if Nadal plays Paris and WTF. Are you still holding on to your notion that Nadal did not have a great year?
