It's really Federer vs. Sampras

You know you've had an amazing season when your biggest stumbling block was a bed. We speak of The King -- Roger Federer. Blogging from Tokyo in October, Rog wrote about how he woke up in the middle of the night "screaming in a state of shock" and proceeded to bang his leg on the sharp wood frame. That didn't stop him from winning the tournament, of course. Or the one after that, in Madrid. Or the one after that, in Basel. The guy is devouring tournaments like Pac Man with a serious case of the munchies.
As Federer heads into the season-ending Masters Cup next week, which pits the top eight players in round-robin competition, he won't be playing for the No. 1 ranking -- he locked that up months ago. And though Rafa and Roddick will be gunning for him, Federer's stiffest competition is against the player he's most compared to, one of his childhood heroes, Pete Sampras.
Forget Federer and Nadal. The most important rivalry in tennis is between Federer and Sampras. There certainly isn't another topic that stirs the hearts and minds of fans more than the question, Who's better?

The head-to-head record provides virtually no insight. The two played once, in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2001, which Federer won. And you can break down all of their strokes, one by one, but that's subjective (other than the fact, which has nothing to do with their greatness, that Federer is exciting to watch, while Pete induced yawns big enough to be named hurricanes).
Then there are the individual accomplishments. Although Sampras leads in virtually all departments, Federer is quickly closing in. At 25 years old, he already has 44 singles titles to Sampras' 64, and Fed cares more about proving himself week in, week out, than Sampras ever did. In other words: Kiss that record goodbye.
In 2006, Federer put together a masterpiece of a season that overshadows anything Sampras did in a calendar year. He became the first male player since Rod Laver in 1961-62 to reach six consecutive major finals and the first player ever to win both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open three straight times. Most impressively, Federer came up one match short of the game's most celebrated accomplishment, the Grand Slam, which hasn't been done since Laver in 1969.
But you can throw all of that out. It doesn't matter. There's just one stat that counts when you're talking about Roger and Pete: Who'll end up with the most Grand Slam titles. Sampras has the all-time record with 14; Federer has 9. But short of the Swiss star having another mishap with a bed, that record will fall. The debate will be over.
And Pete knows it.
After Federer won this year's U.S. Open, he received a text message, out of the blue. Sampras wrote to congratulate him. He called Federer three days later to see if he got the text. (Apparently, the world's No. 1 is quick to return tennis balls, not messages.) "Pete said that I dominate the sport more than he used to," Federer told TENNIS Magazine. "It showed me that Sampras is pretty relaxed now. Records are there to be broken."
Perhaps Pete is chill. Or perhaps he's trying to get into Federer's headspace. You know how it goes: If someone is schooling you on a tennis court, one well-known tactic is to gush praise over them in the hopes that he'll relax, lose focus, and ultimately lose the match. It might be reading too much into a man who spends most of his time playing golf and poker. But it's fun to think Sampras is trying to mess with The King to protect his record.
One thing is certain: Federer will continue his march to becoming the best player of all time, and his hero will be watching.

Well, that's simply not true. They were/are both out there giving 110%.

Nothing at all like Sampras. Sampras is a complete what you see is what you get type guy. Might as well as accuse Tiger Woods of being a closent Sampras fan trying to sabotage Federer.

I seriously doubt Sampras is trying to get into Fed's head in order to
pretect his records. But as a seriously good tennis player, all those
Federer's achievements would make Sampras want to try a match with
Federer. That's a basic human competitive nature. I think Sampras
wants to try playing Federer at Wimbledon even though he is not
that young anymore....

rafa's best friend: how old are you? and if you are so confident in nadal, would you bet that he will win the australian and french opens next yr, and if he does not, you will never post here again?

i'm sorry but your posts are just too out of the blue like robbie 1988 said, and i dont mind fans of other players just keep it clean and not like bashing or saying something which really is not relevant

but if nadal does win both the AO and french open, congrats to nadal, and your guts for betting on him for your posting life

Federer's probably the most talented and versatile player ever and is a true joy to watch. However, you can bet your bottom dollar that Sampras was never 2-8 against one of his top competitors. Truth is that, is good as he is, Federer is playing in a bit of a talent vacuum. Ever notice that his matches are rarely close? Federer often plays ahead on the score, which takes a lot of pressure off of him in matches. Very few can even challenge him athletically as well as from a tennis skills standpoint. When his Spanish nemesis shows that he can stay with him, Federer has shown that he not only gets tight, he sometimes pulls the old chokola. Italian open, anyone? Sampras never did that. When #1, he won many close matches against all of his most highly ranked competitors. Let's see if Federer can even the score with Nadal on hard courts and make it 2-2. To be the best ever, Federer needs to even out his record against Nadal just as much as he needs a win at the French.

Sampras had many more "close" matches because his return game wasn't all that great. Chicken versus egg.

Sampras had a 2-6 record against Kracijek before he made it 4-6. And he lost to Richard at Wimbledon. He also had a losing record against W. Ferriera. One could say, Federer doesnt lose to journeymen.
Federer has made gr8 comebacks in plenty of matches, e.g. against Nadal at Miami, Agassi at US Open.
And lets be fair, Federer would be 2-2 against Nadal if he wasnt so damn good at reaching every clay court final. Sampras, through most of his career was a punching bag for most on clay. Remember when Santoro embrassed Sampras 6-1, 6-1 one year?

If Federer hadn't crushed Andy Roddick's soul and spirit, he would be ten times better than anyone who Sampras faced. Who the heck did sampras play anyways? That was so good? Lets face it, and it probably bugs the ole Greek something horrible, Federer won their only match, and he is going to destroy his Slam record.

DIGEST this,. once and for ALL. Federer SNACKED on Sampras serve at WIMBLEDON!!!! And it, his return, IS BETTER, much better, NOW. So please, apart from his serve, what the fawk is Sampras going to do to Federer, that would put him in a sweat??? NUTHIN, that is what. Nuthin. The Greek and his fans better just accept the blatant truth, Fed RULES.

Federer, not AGASSI, not Connors, not Hewitt, has the best break your heart and soul return, EVER. And that is why comparing him to these second rate bums is pointless. Pointless.

Like i said, RAFA's spirit is getting stronger and stronger, and he is not intimated by Federer at all. As far as RAFA winning both aus and french, I cannot garanttee that, noone can, if i could i would be a millinonare. All i am saying is slowly but surely RAFA will start to overtake Federer as much as talented is FEd is. Besides i don't make stupid bets like that, and too many people in this Forum needs me and love my comments, people like you are in the Minority......

Wow.. I actually agree with you :)

Your spot on, Federer does have the best return ever in my eyes. It is twice as good as it was in their only meeting which was on grass where you would expect Sampras' serve to be at it's best.. and it was. The only area I would give Sampras the edge is that he has a better serve and a better volley. That being said, it would be interesting to see how good his serve is when you have Federer returning, not to mention his volleys with Federer ripping passing shots or making you play volleys from your shoe laces every time.

On a side not, it says that Federer and Sampras' only meeting was in the QUARTERFINALS of Wimbledon 2001 .. it was actually the R16 .. Henman took out Federer in the Quarterfinals and then we all know what happened in the semi's with Goran but I thought I would just correct that.

Here's my take on this; while sooo many say Fedex plays in a talent vacuum, that's just plain wrong. Samprass did have great opponents and in his time was the dominant genius of the sport. However to say that the current line of tennis players that Federer faces are talentless hacks, that's just wrong. It simply means that he is now the Dominant genius in the game. Unfortunately the only real rival Federer has currently Is Nadal (who's basically a scary combination of Chang and Becker) which breeds this illusion that tennis is a talentless void compared to Samprass' time. As for who is a better player who knows. In my opinion though Fedex is the more complete player, he may not be the best in anyone thing in the sport (serve return bh fh), but he does everything well plus he takes care of himself and never looked like he was about to keel over and die to win a match.

Sampras was putting everything he had into his serve and Fed was routining it. And as far as groundies go, no contest. And Sampras serve and volley was not all that, he just had such an amazing serve that he rarely got anything that tough to volley. But he sure got more than he bargained for, against the FED.

"Nadal (who's basically a scary combination of Chang and Becker)"

Now...that's a comparison thats worth a thousand bucks ! Don't think i've heard that one b4. Won;t say i completely agree with you - just can't see much of Becker in Nadal IMHO except they are both hairy MOnkeys

You mean you can't see the huge saturations of testosterone in both guys? I mean for Christs sake! I've never seen teenagers that looked that old (mid 20's) walk on a court and just punish a ball for being a ball.
