Ivanisevic: Federer can play five more years

Goran Ivanisevic believes Federer is capable of playing for many more years at the top because he feels nobody is capable of challenging him.
“If he wins 20 (HE WON) I don’t know how you can compare it,” Ivanisevic said before AO final.
“He’s one of the biggest sportsmen in the history of any sport.
“In the new Open era, to win 20 Grand Slams in this level of competition is not easy. He likes the records, he likes to win.
“The way he plays he can play another four, five years because nobody is pushing him, nobody’s pressing, so he’s enjoying it and this would be a great achievement for Roger.”

Ivanisevic also reserved special praise for Federer’s coach Ivan Ljubicic.
He said: “As a tennis player he was very professional.
“He was number three in the world. He was huge competition to Roger when they played. He won the Davis Cup almost alone.
“He was one of the best servers ever, great coach – he coached Raonic very successfully and since he came, Roger is just playing amazing tennis, last year, this year.”

I wonder how it feels for Goran with his 1 slam to look at Roger with 20. Maybe it's like having a great wife and seeing this other guy with 20 beautiful wives.

Goran, like all who behold Federer, has become peacefully aware of his own flaws as a player and as a human. Fed has shown the Tennis world a new way, of adaptation, flexibility, and continuing to rise to every challenge with an open heart. I doubt Goran bears him any ill will.

goran's still done better than the vast majority of tennis players that ever played the game and ever will that haven't gotten anywhere near a slam final let alone win one

i don't think he's envious in the least

He can play for 5 more years but I only see him competing at the top level for the next 2-3 years (which is still amazing for his age)

Goran is so cool. Very gracious toward Ljubo. Ljubo deserves a lot of recognition.
Not much more to say about Roger, but Goran is so good at expressing his admiration.

Now, as for five more years... hhahaha, of course he can play for five more. But to compete for slams for five more years is preposterous. Even Roger and Ljubo understand winning three of the past five slams was a blessed accomplishment, and will be almost impossible to match in the next five slams, let alone the next five years.

14/15 were full schedules for fed.

Excluding clay and Bercy he's played pretty close to the same schedule. Sub Rotterdam for Dubai this year.

Stuttgart Grass wasn't a thing either in those years. 2015 he skipped Montreal and Miami.

Brisbane and Hopman Cup are same week.

Yeah, he skipped Miami and Montreal in 15 , but played all 3 CC Masters.

Have 17 official tournaments for Fed in 14/15
12 in 2017.

But yeah, if we include Hopman Cup and Laver Cup in 17, it does look closer than I originally thought.

I agree. Goran knows he was a very talented headcase who was not close to ATG material. He's not oblivious to reality. Winning Wimbledon was his lifelong dream, and just when it seemed that all hope was lost, he came out of nowhere to seize the title. For a player at his level, nothing could be more satisfying. There was just one great thing he needed to do, and by god he did it!

Absolutely loved the smile on goran’s face when fed hit that backhand against berdy in AO17 (also liked the stoneface on stepenak for the same moment).

I can’t say I agree with Goran, though - about 4-5 more years.

I think fed has too many matches in his body to play til 40 (though as a fan I would love that of course).

I think - if the body stays healthy - he makes a big push this year and next, and does his swan song in 2020.

Well, you can't just count match numbers, I think that is flawed. Fed needed a lot less time to win his matches and a lot less effort.

So, he doesn't have that much mileage as it seems. He is in better shape than 6 years younger guys, so this proves it, doesn't it?

You make a good point about style of play, and time on court.

But these guys or gals who play into their later years often have missed a lot of time due to injuries.

Fed himself told mattek-sands not to stress about rushing her comeback, because she would get the time missed “on the back end”.

While Fed has missed 1/2 of 2016, he hasn’t missed that much time to put on the back of his career.

In a way, that’s what he did last year and perhaps this year and next - added time on the back end due to rest/rehab/strengthening during time off in 2016.

I just don’t see the body being able to perform at his current level for more than a couple more years.

Again, as a fan, I would like the guy to play forever...but I think he knows he’s got only an allotted amount of time left.

Then again, what do I know? Goran is a slam winner, and what can you say about Roger Federer?

The guy is rewriting the rules as we speak!

Yes, Federer is rewriting the rules, you never know. There was nobody like Federer till now.

Nice post! Really interesting about Roger's advice for Mattek-Sands. Wouldn't have guessed they had that kind of a relationship. Any source for this? Not doubting what you said; just love reading about Roger's relationship with other players.

She said it when she was working commentary for the AO this year. He gave her the advice last year at the USO, where she was doing commentary and interviews while she was doing her rehab.

Edit - sorry, just saw your last post, after already replying.

I still find it mind blowing that Fed def Ljube in 2006 Miami final and now Ljube is coaching him and he's still winning Miami... LOL

Yeah, that's what goes through my head when I see him in the stands. It's puts things in perspective. Federer is just ancient. But it's fun seeing him outlast most of the guys from his generation and the next.

Damn, I'm so nervous, things are too good to be true, I'm so expecting that something terrible will happen and Fed will suddenly not win anything.

Goran is then reminded of Mirka ... and feels a whole lot better about himself.
