Ivanovic is hot, but her return feet noise is Cheating

WOW, so if she changed (improved) her game style that is supposed to show us something. Please, I can dig the clip of Maria not screaming like a horse when she was 12 years old...
Ana has changed many things since 2007 season and one of them is how she returns the ball.
She did the sqeeks throughout the tournament and the only one to complain is Hantuchova... I bet ya she would complain about Maria's screaming too...

Face the damn loss and go practice more...

Sorry, I don't buy it. In the first clip I posted from the Venus match, she returns pretty much the same way she did in the clips from 2007. Once in a while she'll take a step forward and she'll squeak her shoe once, but that's it. I did notice that even in that clip, she would do the squeaking thing on second serves sometimes, though.

I want to make it clear that I don't think this is why she won the match, I think she won because Hantuchova has a history of mental breakdowns and this is just another example, and talent-wise Ana is better. My point is that Ana is clearly doing this on purpose. I agree with the people who are saying screaming at the top of your lungs when hitting a volley is a deliberate act, also. These things do not win matches, but it's very unsportsmanlike and tennis is a sport that, in theory, should see more sportsmanship than any other.

I also think that the fact that nobody complained is meaningless. What's the umpire supposed to do if somebody does complain? Last night all the ump said was "It's her shoes on the floor". Well no kidding. An umpire isn't going to tell a player to change the way they're playing. That's the beauty of it.

Lol, what a bunch of BS is coming from couple of people here. It is clear to everyone who played competitive tennis even once, that she is NOT doing this on purpose.

Some people here just hate Ana for whatever reason and are trying to stir this stupid controversy. I just don't get it. Just look at these dumb and ridiculous replies from OP.

from cnn, posted before the hantuchova match. looks like wertheim agrees with me that this is a bit different than grunting:

"Not to be the hold-off on the Ivanovic bandwagon, but if we're supposed to loathe Sharapova's shrieks and to consider them some form of gamesmanship, how can we not criticize Ivanovic's use of the "come on" after nearly every single point. She is shouting it not only after winners but after her opponents unforced errors. So I think it's high time the Ivanovic back-lash begins.
-- A.I., Athens, Ohio

Never mind the "come ons." I can't believe no one else questioned Ivanovic for squeaking her shoes on the surface every time her opponent went into her ball toss. I asked Venus about this and I don't think she quite got the question. (Or else she simply took the high road.) But watch for this next time she plays. As soon as her opponent starts to serve, Ivanovic dances around creating a nails-on-chalkboard soundtrack. To me, that would be even more annoying than grunting."

I think thats something Invanovic should stop doing. It looks as though she is squeaking her feet on purpose to try to distract the server in someway. I wouldn't consider this cheating but very annoying.

Have you ever tried to do this on purpose? It's more detrimental to your game if it's not already a part of it.

That is exactly what I said some 50 or so posts ago. Try to do move your feet in order to make a noise while you are trying concentrate to read opponents serve and to prepare for the return. It will hurt you more that it will distract your opponent. That is why nobody really complained until sore loser Hantuchova. It makes no sense.

Lol, it typical womens tennis bs.

Women who are emotionally unstable and unconfident pull stupid crap like this all the time.

Hmm lets list a couple of court antics used today:
  • looking to coaches box for illegal coaching
  • screaching-yelling very loud on purpose during your shots
  • excessive medical timeouts during changeovers - inbetween sets
  • squeaking shoes during serves
  • retiring early from your match when your getting an @sswhopping
Typical womens crap that happens on a regular basis. Some of this does happen from time to time on the mens side but this is a regular every match occurance thing for the women. And they expect to get the same respect, attention, pay as the guys.......lol give me a break!!!!!
Just women's tennis? What about Djokovic's ball bouncing? He'll bounce it five times during normal points & 19 times during big ones. He then randomly goes to the quickest serve motion ever. I wouldn't want to be waiting to return & having to guess just when he'll stop the bounce.

& let's not even get into the "timeouts" Nadal takes before big points. Cools off the opponent's momentum pretty good if you ask me.

Well then, how about taking a medical timeout to get the trainer to cut your toenails, when you are down 2 sets to 1.

LOL. :)

To the OP, she is not cheating. It happens all the time on hardcourt>>> you should try playing on it sometime with someone who actually moves their feet and prepares properly.
i have enough motor control of foot pressure to shuffle and split step and not squeak squeak squeak, as i know its a distraction, and a form of cheating.

i would slaughter u in tennis my friend

and what? If you play at the professional level and you can't deal with a bit of squeaking, you don't belong. Now, fuzzy10sballs, you claim to have played for quite some time. So have I. In fact, I've played competitive tennis for the majority of my life. I've had opponents who squeaked their shoes, slapped the court with their racket, moved 5 feet side to side--the point is that I didn't let it distract me. If you blame your loss on someone squeaking their shoes, it's more a problem with you.
what she did was clearly cheating

Here's a clip from last years Pacific Life Open where Ivanovic is returning serve:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vkL5IAluE0

Not only is she not squeaking he shoes on the court, but she's not even shuffling her feet in any way during the serve. While this is almost a year old now, there's a video from last year's US Open where she demonstrates the same thing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGGPxVSd4ng

And for people saying it's only the hard courts that's causing this and it wouldn't matter on clay, she wasn't shuffling at all during the French:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYCfEhmFzdE

So there's three examples from 2007 where she's barely moving her feet during returns, so now all of the sudden she does this shuffling thing? Hell, she wasn't even doing it in the first set of her previous match:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIfpkfAs0o8

Fast forward to the tiebreak, and what's she doing?

I don't understand why some idiots on here would just ignore this post and continue to back up the players' gamesmanship. The WTA Tour is a joke and so are the jokers on this forum.

if anything Sharapova cheats a lot more by screaming when she hits the ball. the normal grunting is ok, but that sharapova girl really screams.... hate to watch her play, horrible strokes to to it off.

The act of your shoes squeaking is not the problem. It's when she does it that it becomes a distraction.

Did you ever see that tsunami for relief program? Henman was playing Srichaphan. At one point in the match, Henman was returning serves and he started shuffling his feet and squeaking his shoes on purpose and causing a distraction when Srichaphan was about to serve. Of course, everybody laughed because it was funny, but it also demonstrated that he was obviously trying to distract Srichaphan.

In the last video of darkhorse's post, Ana's shoe squeaking came right as Venus starts to toss the ball each time. It is like a car alarm sounding as you toss the ball to hit a serve. Of course, if this happens, you'd most likely catch your ball toss in response to the distraction.

Why are you comparing their gamesmanship? They are all cheating by using gamesmanship to disrupt/distract their opponents.

Yelling, Shoe Squeaking, Stalling, Getting Coaching from the stands.. They're all the same thing. Cheating. Gamesmanship.

Just because they have "looks" or "personality" does not mean they have the right to cheat.

None of this (except Nadal's timeouts) is illegal, Drakulie. You can do whatever you want with your feet, you can bounce the ball as many times as you want and use it to distract you opponent's concentration, you can yell the name of your dog when you hit serves, etc... but then, if nobody judged these sorts of gaming by players, how would the rulebook be ever updated? Am I right? Indeed.

If we think it's gaming & is unfair & is hurting the sport, let's just point fingers. Why not?

No, unfortunately, YOU are wrong. For starters, you can't bounce the ball as many times as you want. You have a certain time between the end of the point, and beginning of the new one.

is there a rule stating that if a player is creating a hindrance to the opponent, then the hindrance rule shall be used? (If a player is hindered by playing the point by a deliberate act of the opponent, the player shall win the point).

There is absolutely no way to read Ana's mind to determine if she is "purposely" trying to distract her opponent. When you invent a machine that reads minds, please do inform the ATP/WTA.

yes, i love controversy.

Don't cha know that the Williams were trying to put on a show of decency after they lose this year?

If she said she was distracted by the squeaking during the match, then she'd talked about it in the interview. If she just brought it up out of nowhere then her "good girl" image will be ruined because she was making up excuses for her loss.

OK, I stand corrected!: You can bounce the ball as many times as time permits. So let's say you need 10 seconds to come to the service line & the rest of the service motion, which leaves you 15 ball-bouncing seconds. About three bounces a second = 45 ball bounces. Rafa can bounce it up to 120 times. Not a bad upper bound, is it?

I'm just messin' about here, but let's be honest, your love for Ivanovic is blinding you. No worries, admit it & we'll move on.

She didn't do the shuffling crap last year. Then this year, it magically appears on and off and especially loud  during a tiebreaker?
Sampras use to play an all-court game and played a lot from the baseline. Then one year, he decided to play serve and volley exclusively. I guess you would call that a hindrance. LMAO!

Shoes can't squeak no matter what on grass or clay. I thought genius like you should realize this. And no it does not appear magically during tie breaks. Hantuchova and Ana didn't play a single tie break in their match.

I dunno, if its intentional or not but if she shuffling her feet to get herself to a potential ready position just like Stefan Edberg would do, ie stand way behind the baseline and when the server was in their serve motion, he would shuffle near to the baseline to return serve....
I hope Daniella didn't attribute her entire loss on Ana's shuffling of feet....

It's so obvious she does it to psyche out her opponent. Why can't people here just admit it?

If this were her return style, a la Stefan Edberg, we'd have a different story.

storm its only obvious to the people who understand the whole play by play situation. they will never understand, as they are set in their ways.

Oh dear.. here comes all the smileys and the "LOL" lingos used to make themselves more "creditable" heh  Oops... I mean

You don't need mind reading tecnologia for that, my amigo.

I guess I can yell out random obscenities during play and claim that I have Tourette Syndrome. Lo siento, I can't help myself. Chupa mi culo!!!! Yo soy Chino!!!!! Oh sorry, I have Tourette Syndrome.
I wonder what the people would say if ana had a chalkboard hanging from her waist, and only on bigger points when the toss would be released into the air, ana would scratch the board to mess up the server.

that would be crazy. the smart way is to squeak your shoes, so its easier to mask as moving your feet.

I really do like Ivanovic, like most people, but this squeaking got my attention recently. There is no doubt it's intentional. It seems like her coach or someone "helpful" told her to do it and she complied. I'm not sure she would come up with this on her own (maybe I'm naive), but now that it's working she keeps doing it. Which brings down my level of admiration for her a couple of notches...

Also, let me assure you it's really annoying and distracting to the server. It happened to me once in a league match and I was like - "guy, what the hell is wrong with you?". Totally inappropriate and poor sportsmanship. I beat the crap out of him or at least I'd like to think it was the case.

Seems like Hantuchova was really was pissed off by this and hence the "cool handshake". I don't blame her. She was fighting her nerves trying to hang on for dear life, now she had to deal with screeching noise from her opponent on top of it. It's annoying enough in a neutral situation...

Now, if this happens in the final, we're going to see some fireworks (or Yuri will jump the fence)...

I was waiting for a thread like this to pop up. Ana is definitely doing it on purpose. She really wants to throw off the server's timing. I'm rooting for Ana to win it all, but let's be honest about this; the shuffles are intentional.
I agree, there is no way to rationalize what she does, it is obvious, and in comparison to the hundreds of players who play pro tennis, she seems to be part of a select group (1 or2) who do this.

the more people pay close attention to the whole match it become clear as day she was doing it on purpose, picking and choosing moments to make more noise.

Right, because a player's habits are set in stone and that once they turn pro it is physically impossible for them to implement something such as shuffling their feet before a point. You're a smart one.

You need to breathe...

your clearly blind. shuffling and squeaking are much different..and waiting for the right point to squeak more then normal.

your not a smart one
