Jack Sock at risk of being completely unranked due to mediocre performances this year - was top 10 less than 2 years ago

This is quite something.

Jack Sock who less than 2 years ago won the Paris Masters, qualified for the ATP Finals and made the SF (beating Cilic and Zverev) before finishing the year ranked #8 is now at risk of being unranked next month.

His 2018 began terribly with a first match, straight sets loss as the defending champ and top seed in Auckland. The event organizers criticized him for a lack of effort and threatened to withhold his appearance fee. Despite being top 10, Sock lost 4 of his first 5 matches of the year. He didn't win back to back matches all year until the Paris Masters in November where he was the defending champ, he made the QF but lost to Thiem. Due to his awful year he finished ranked #105 despite starting the year ranked #8. He did well in doubles however winning Indian Wells, Wimbledon, the USO and the WTF finishing the year ranked #2

His 2019 was marred with injuries but he still played 8 tournaments. He lost every singles match which included: the Australian Open, Atlanta, Washington, Cincy qualies, USO (where he somehow got a WC) and at challengers in Fairfield and Las Vegas. These losses included losing to players ranked #155, 66, #340 and today the #449. Strangely, he played the Laver Cup and defeated world number #11 Fognini in straight sets. Unfortunately for him the event gives 0 points. He's done alright in doubles this year with a 3R at the Aus Open and QF at the USO.

Lendl had a court built at his home with the exact same specifications as the one on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Sock on the other hand had a Chipotle built at his

His two biggest weaknesses are:
- no BH
- bad movement
So it's quite easy to exploit his weakness even for and average ATP player.
And it's not a surprise he's a great doubles player. He still has a great FH and plays 90% of his shots off that side in doubles cause less movement is required and it's easier to run around your BH.

I thought last year was a disgrace (falling from #8 to #105 was probably the biggest fall from such heights since Agassi in 1996-97); but this is something else.

Should the man be unranked at the end of the year, he should never be allowed to play singles on the ATP Tour again.

Agreed upon by all Sock-hating tennis observers.

Why would anyone be so invested as to hate a player just because he fell from grace and sucks now?

It’s really crazy to think that so much of the sport is mental. To go from top 10 to being unable to win a single snatch is really unthinkable. I’d imagine it has to do with all the attention and money he got. I have distinct memories of JS purposely tanking in the first round of Kalamazoo with his shoes untied just to make a scene that he was the best. I only wish he never had success to begin with :)

Wrong about the movement. He is actually an awesome mover when fit. Sock just happens to be 30lbs overweight at the moment.
Yeah but when was the last time he was fit? I think before the injury which long time ago now. Why does it take so long for a pro to get fit?

On many levels he is more of a professional disgrace than his buddy Kyrgios.

i cant imagine the guy has no backhand. ;-);-);-)
his backhand isn't that bad. it isn't top 50 material though. it is still top 100 quality. but I think his serve is what's let him down. he had world class 1st serve that really hurt guys, even top 10 guys had trouble with that serve. but now it has too much spin on it. he needs to flatten it out more and hit corner with accuracy. that is where it has to start for him. I would love to coach him if he is interested.

Yeah I find it bizarre that he doesn't get himself in shape. I lost 60lbs last year and I don't have access to 1/100th the resources he does. Guess he's just lazy or doesn't care about tennis anymore.
Whoa, awesome! You need to share your routine + meal plan. I could use it for sure after knee surgery and having gained some weight myself. And good job man! 60 lbs is a lot!

Thanks! Yeah 60 lbs was about 1/4 my body weight. I went from 240 or so to now around 185 I'd say, or a little under that.

The main thing I did was a combined 25 to 35 min of hiit /regular cardio on the elliptical about 4x a week. Diet wise I cut out breads and sugary foods, snacking on fruit or veggies when I wanted a snack but occasionally letting myself have something "bad" but not more than once a day. Also drank lots of water, got extra sleep and tried not to weigh myself often, just kind of got motivation by my clothes becoming looser and feeling better in general! Good luck to you with your goal...I've had ACL surgery and was able to come back from it okay.

I might post something over in the fitness section about my weight loss with a before/after pic, if so I'll tag you. I didn't think I could lose that much but I just stayed with it and it happened!

a more up-to-date pic (couldn't find the one where he took off his shirt at laver cup)

notice how tight the polo is on him?

37th in the world in doubles is nice, but it is not great. How did he ever get on this year's Laver team?

maybe they do the selections a year before the next laver cup

on sept 23, 2018, he was world number 18 in singles, and world number 6 in doubles

then things changed ;)

Jokes aside, he may have decided to concentrate on doubles.

Mac is the doubles specialist. But have to disagree. Been watching some doubles on TennisTV. Rather compelling, actually. Extraordinary relexes . . . and they hit offensive lobs! I think Mac the Mouth is intelligent, but also just says what comes into his mind, w/o filter (except maybe when he is commentating on TV at a Slam match). He has said some damn silly things over the years, along with his frequent insightful comments. Also, these matches on TennisTV, the fans in the stands are really enjoying them. I also experienced this at WTF last year and IW in March. The women's doubles final at the latter was particularly exciting.

Except for needing to get commitments from the obvious (Novak, Rafa), selections are made close to the date of the event.
