Jack Sock: is he doulbe faulting on deuce side with his right leg?

When I was watching his match against Steve Johnson the other day, I noticed that on the deuce side, his right leg some times crosses past the center hash mark before coming back to the right. I think that is a foot fault.

If it is, why isn't the chair umpire saying anything about it? Not such a big deal. But, just curious.

You're correct. From the ITF Rulebook. See #4.

18. FOOT FAULT

During the service motion, the server shall not:

  1. Change position by walking or running, although slight movements of the feet are permitted; or

  2. Touch the baseline or the court with either foot; or

  3. Touch the area outside the imaginary extension of the sideline with either

    foot; or

  4. Touch the imaginary extension of the centre mark with either foot.

Maybe the umpire 1) doesn't notice, or 2) rules that he comes back into the correct side before the service motion begins? When do you see this happening? Before he serves or during the motion?

Oh, I see it now - when he steps back with the right foot on the deuce side. I think technically that's a FF. It's part of the service motion.

But his heal, which was the only part of his foot over the "extension of the Center line didn't touch court...evidenced by the shadow under his heal....not a foot fault...close but no cigar

Unless of course the "imaginary extension of the centre mark" is along both the horizontal and vertical planes. ;)

Nice try, but if that were the case, then it would apply to the base line as well, correct? Resulting in a staggering amount of hip and knee faults.

Okay, it does look like Sock lifts his right heel off the ground. So, the question of whether he is double faulting is a much closer one.
