Was Federer poverty stricken or deprived? What about McEnroe? Sampras? Querrey? If you have advanced degrees, education, high income (nevermind if you have free cash flow), you have to create the conditions of deprivation that manifest hunger to have a world class junior. Period. Ready to argue on this point.
Definitely arguing this as the state of play going forward. Also, I think we assume to players come from rich backgrounds. Fed, Gulbis, maybe Nadal, Murray. Who else is rich? All of this despite that fact that many of the top players didn't experience any of said conditions.
There is a big difference in being rich vs middle class vs poor, in motivation and in resources. Look through the bios of the top 100 ATP players and you'll find most come from middle to upper middle class families. Sure, there are rags to riches stories, but not many - they just get all the publicity.Definitely arguing this as the state of play going forward. The things is, being poor and hungry just isn't enough in tennis. This isn't basketball - you can't hone your skills for free on the playground with tons of high-quality built-in competition, get world-class coaching and training for free in college, and get drafted and at a minimum ride the pine for $500k per year all expenses paid.
Right on. Plus, our media does a "sensational" job adding plenty of frosting to the rags to riches stories. Don't get me started on some of these tennis commentators. There is a big difference in being rich vs middle class vs poor, in motivation and in resources. I wanted to say the same but did not. 10 yr old Jan could not beat a 12 yr old boy ranked almost 700. I know a few 10 yr old won gold ball.born 2001, so 12 this year.
His strokes is good but not highest level for that age.
You don't want to know.Jan strokes look really nice. He still looks so young.
What happened this afternoon. Seen Number 1 got banned and TCF erased all his posts again???
http://www.tennisrecruiting.net/player/activity.asp?id=786907So Jan fizzled out? Another cautionary tale?
