Definitely arguing this as the state of play going forward. Also, I think we assume to players come from rich backgrounds. Fed, Gulbis, maybe Nadal, Murray. Who else is rich?

The Serbs aren't rich and deprivation during the bombing was no deterrent to their development.

IMO, if deprivation is the key ingredient in the development of a world class athlete, then the United States would be the doormat of the Olympic games.

There is a big difference in being rich vs middle class vs poor, in motivation and in resources. Look through the bios of the top 100 ATP players and you'll find most come from middle to upper middle class families. Sure, there are rags to riches stories, but not many - they just get all the publicity.

The things is, being poor and hungry just isn't enough in tennis. This isn't basketball - you can't hone your skills for free on the playground with tons of high-quality built-in competition, get world-class coaching and training for free in college, and get drafted and at a minimum ride the pine for $500k per year all expenses paid.

Right on. Plus, our media does a "sensational" job adding plenty of frosting to the rags to riches stories. Don't get me started on some of these tennis commentators.

Is he 12 yet? Looks pretty good on video, but may lack real match experience. TRN showed he played one B12 match in CA in September 2011 and lost to a kid, who may be 2-3 years older, but ranked almost 700.

I also saw a report that the family moved to Finland, but can't substantiate it. From his record he appears to be a good player, far the top of his age group. His father used to post here.
For me I'd call it cautionary from the standpoint that over-hyping a child is just wrong. Kids can't process and understand the exposure.
