Jenson Brooksby has just entered the UTR Top 10 for the first time in his career. Props for this achievement.

Yes, I know he hasn’t played in 18 months. But UTR algo doesn’t care. All that matters in the algo is who your past opponents were, and Jenson played Ruud and Paul in his final tourney, and now both are top 10.

Update: Jenson Brooksby continues to climb.

He is now UTR World #7.

Can his rise up the rankings be stopped? How high can he go?

I thought UTR only count matches up to 12 months, so how accurate is this if his last matches were 18 months ago…..? lol

Lol...gotta love the ''100% reliable'' wording underneath. I'm sure he's really a threat to the top 10 or even 150 rn :-D :-D

Update:

Jenson has narrowed the gap and trails #3 Novak Djokovic by only 0.02 UTR units.

Will Djokovic’s unforgivable loss of 3 games versus Rafa Nadal at Roland Garros cause him to be leapfrogged by Brooksby in the UTR rankings?

Notably, JB is also within 0.1 UTR unit striking distance of passing ATP World #1 Sinner.

Did Sinner seeing Brooksby catching up to him in the UTR rankings (by sitting out for 18 months) factor into Sinner’s decision to pull out from the Olympics and instead train idly in the warm summer waters of the Mediterranean?

Uh, UTR the tool for a few powers; this rating may matter for the UTR 9-13 when players are in need.
Bottom line is that there is a hack to make your UTR go up without actually improving if you are a junior. Just play up a level, and as soon as you have an outlier good tourney (or have an outlier draw against really good players), stop and sit out a year and watch your UTR outpace your peers.

How'd u know? That's a good advice.

There’s an inherent flaw in the algorithm.

UTR thought it would be good to have everyone’s UTR continue to adjust when past opponents have new results in the future. In theory, they can squeeze out more accuracy from this post-match opponent strength adjustment.

But this is based on the faulty assumption that your opponents’ level doesn’t change rapidly.

The reality is that players may change equipment and improve, or they may suffer injuries.

The Jenson Brooksby case is Exhibit A of why it’s a bad idea.

Jenson’s last tournament before his career threatening injury, he played 2 Top 10 NextGen rising players. The better Casper and TP play, the higher Jenson Brooksby’s rating will climb.

US Colleges are heavy on UTR ratings rather than ITF rankings of juniors; there's more to the story than meets the eye

UTR Factoid of the Day:

The rating gap between UTR #4 Brooksby (16.27) and UTR #5 De Minaur (16.15) is larger than the gap between De Minaur and UTR #13 Tommy Paul (16.04), 8 ranking slots behind De Minaur.
