Jenson Brooksby is UTR World #9

There’s an inherent flaw in the algorithm.

UTR thought it would be good to have everyone’s UTR continue to adjust when past opponents have new results in the future. In theory, they can squeeze out more accuracy from this post-match opponent strength adjustment.

But this is based on the faulty assumption that your opponents’ level doesn’t change rapidly.

The reality is that players may change equipment and improve, or they may suffer injuries.

The Jenson Brooksby case is Exhibit A of why it’s a bad idea.

Jenson’s last tournament before his career threatening injury, he played 2 Top 10 NextGen rising players. The better Casper and TP play, the higher Jenson Brooksby’s rating will climb.

Flaw?!

UTR just knows Brooksby is the true GOAT. Respect to them for keeping it real with their algorithm.

So close now.

A little more Netflix and Doritos time and he will pull ahead of the GOAT.
Sometimes I wonder if some bored and pissed-off UTR programmer went rogue before he quit and programmed in this rating creep for inactive pros just to make his bosses squirm and make a point about the embarrassing flaws in the algo?

For guys like Brooksby and Kyrgios who haven’t actually played a match in last 12 months, the match history on the profile shows Fed’s record for his last year on tour.

Could be! Truth is often stranger than fiction. I’m pulling for Brooksby to take the top spot.

Update:

It’s been a rough week for our hero JB, with his UTR dropping like a rock. He is hanging by a thread to his Workd #4 UTR ranking.

With his most recent 2 opponents (TP and Casper from AO 2023), both getting upset this week 19 months later, UTR is not treating Jenson well this week.

Hopefully a good showing at USO from Paul and Casper will get him back where he belongs.

Let Brooksby know that he needs to eat more burgers! (I love this thread)

I should add that my son's UTR keeps climbing after he and his partner got breadsticked and bageled by Ray Sarmiento and his 6'7 partner. My son is in high school, btw.

Does anyone know why Brooksby isn't playing? I read his suspension ended in March 2024, but he hasn't played a match since 2023...?

Exactly this in the bolded. Take a look at Tiafoe— short time ago he couldn’t win any match at all and everyone was fading him on betting sports books. All of a sudden, he’s found some confidence and is playing really well. Same can be said for someone like Nakashima, who was first round fodder for everyone and then within a few short weeks started winning.

Noteworthy detail. Jenson’s rise to the top was assisted by Casper’s rise back into the Top 5.
(Ruud was Jenson’s final victory, so whatever Casper’s ranking is, the UTR algorithm must rate Jenson higher. Since Casper has improved, then obviously so has Jenson).

We all know that UTR has multiple versions of its ranking floating around simultaneously. But the official version for the purposes of this thread is the app for iPhone version, which has JB in the número uno slot above Sinner.

After briefly getting unjustly bumped from the Top 30,

our hero JB is back in the UTR Top 3 where he belongs, ahead of Carlitos but behind Sinner and Nole.
