Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams will spend quarantine and preparation for the Australian part of the season in Adelaide, where they will play exhibition matches at the end of January. The exclusive bubble in Adelaide will number a total of 50 people. They will be accommodated in a five-star hotel with a gym. According to Jeremy Chardy, this is an advantage for the mentioned TOP players, because tennis players in Melbourne will not have such good conditions of accommodation and training.

Former top-25 tennis player Jeremy Chardy has slammed Tennis Australia's decision to give preferential treatment to some of the game's biggest names by hosting a pre-Australian Open tournament with relaxed Covid-19 bubble conditions and smarter facilities.

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will compete in the men's tournament alongside US Open champion Dominic Thiem, while 23-time major winner Serena Williams will play in the women's event along with US Open champion and World No 1 Naomi Osaka and Wimbledon champion Simona Halep.

One unnamed player on the men's and women's side will make up the draw at the exhibition, which is being held at the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre in Adelaide on January 29 and has been dubbed A Day At The Drive.

However, the bubble conditions for this select group of elite players are far more comfortable than what will be enjoyed by those competing at next month's opening Grand Slam of 2021 in Melbourne.

Those taking part in the exhibition will arrive in Adelaide from January 14 and quarantine for two weeks before their matches, but they will be checked into a 4.5-star hotel, considerably swankier than the accommodation in Melbourne.

Those quaratining in Melbourne will arrive two weeks before the Australian Open kicks off on February 8.

The Melbourne group are only allowed to have two members of staff accompany them to the year's first major and only one coach is permitted on the courts.

The Adelaide group will meanwhile will be able to bring more staff with them to their accommodation and can be joined by their whole entourage on the courts.

To add insult to injury, the Melbourne lot have to leave their accommodation to exercise, whereas the hotel in Adelaide comes equipped with a gym.

Both the Adelaide and Melbourne groups are limited to five hours a day outside their hotel rooms.

'This announcement for the top threes is a bit out of the blue and it's weird, to put it mildly,' Chardy told L'Equipe.

'They will even be able to benefit from a gym at the hotel and will be able to do their [gym] exercises which will not count towards the five-hour quota. Everyone can go out. They will almost be able to live normally.

'Already they have a lot of privileges,' fumed Chardy, who is now the World No 72. 'If they can do everything more than you, it will not be the same preparation. And that's weird for a sport where we're all supposed to be on the same footing.'

The only other players allowed in Adelaide other than those taking part in the exhibition are the designated hitting partners of those players e.g. Venus Williams, as she is the hitting partner for her sister. Adelaide can only accommodate 50 players and staff.

Timmy boy finally getting some preferential treatment that big 3 have always gotten.

When the top players are so close in ability, preferential treatment can actually have loads of impact.

Hope RG takes a cue and doesn't over schedule anyone not named Nadal

Complaint is valid, however that is how the world works.

If he can channel that into anger and give a memorable performance it would be good . His choke to Rodionov last year was one of the 2020 highlights

Chardy wouldn’t have said anything if Federer were playing. Not after Federer put him on his Laver Cup team.

This time it is the organisers of AO that are putting the stars in front of the competition. I was reflecting the other day about the admirable resolve of the Australians to put everyone on an equal footing. It turns out that that was short lived and rather premature.

Jeremy has been such a revenue source and great champion for tennis in his career, I think he has a point to make here about the others on his level.

Organizers favor the money makers/attention getters over the rest of the pack, to the pack's detriment. Nothing new here sadly.

Chardy should be thankful he and the rest of the pack are in Melbourne and get to train on the surface AO will be played on.

The top 3 are really denied the privilege of practising on site .. they are being banished to an alien site in Adelaide and have to fly in later

he probably knew what is going to happen in 2021, so this affected his performance in 2020
hard to focus on tennis in 2020, when you know that in 2021 top 3 players will be treated preferentially

So what is CHardys accomodation? 5-star hotel in Melbourne? Oh no, must be so hard for him
Melbourne is a running down city; their 5 star hotel is as good as a 2.5/3 star hotel in Swiss.
over occupied space and ancient training machine can be found in gym.
might have better hotel in Perth

A dog kennel in Switzerland is a better place to live in than 90% of the world, so i dont understand your point

The perception of equality seems to be more important than actual equality. AO organizers are no different than any others on this planet. I wish these folks would just sac up and be honest for once. That would be refreshing.

Can you imagine this press release:

Top 3 men and women will get nicer accommodations and extra pay because they will generate more revenue for the tournament via the exhibition and gate draw. Good luck to all the competitors.

That would be amazingly refreshing for once.
