Hello, my friends!

Today i will show you one of the rarest and unique racquets from my collection of personal tennis stars sticks.

The owner of this racquet was the real prodigy of his time. Despite being the part of unbelievable American generation (included such terminators as Sampras and Agassi + Chang), he made more pulsating signals for being Tour dominator.
Under 23 he made 7 runs to Grand Slam events finals. Sampras made 6, Agassi - 4, Chang - 1.
For example nowadays leaders Jannik Sinner (24 years old already) and Carlos Alcaraz (22 years 4 months) have 5 and 6 finals respectively (before US Open-2025 semis).

Yes, numbers told us that the hero of this article was in a charge of having one of the most bright careers ever on ATP Tour.

But all of sudden he finished as a top player aged 23. And after 25 he never reached Grand Slam quarters and exactly at 26 for the last time was the member of Top 10. He retired before turning 30. But still was capable of doing things, as his last pro win was over one of the most talented players ever - David Nalbandian.

Critical situation with his racquet sponsor Wilson was one of the reasons of his crash. Finally he was forced to find ways to find a new racquet for himself. And guys from Jay's Custom Stringing made a very special racquet for him that was based on his beloved Wilson Pro Staff Original 6.0. But it was other weapon. No PWS, unique bumper guard:

And for sure layup. Wilson was made of Graphite and Kevlar, his unique racquets were made of Graphite and Fiberglass. With Graphite was on the top of the mold, and Fiberglass - in the lower part of the racquet.
As our hero was used to play with Wilson handle, his racquets were equipped with Wilson like molded handle, and even a butt cap was from Wilson, but for sure W logo were deleted from his racquets.

My friends, Jim Courier and his unbelievable racquet! This particular racquet was used by Jim during famous Davis Cup-1998 first round match against team Russia. Courier became national hero (once again abd for the last time) when he won the deciding match against Russia's 18-years old debutant Marat Safin. He did it after being bagelled in the first set!

And here are the specs of this super rare racquet:

Weight - 369,
Swingweight - 354,
Length - 68,4,
Balance - 31,8 (without Tourna overgrip, which signs you can clearly see on the Fairway by Balmforth of England that Jim continued to use).

Hope you've liked this article!
Best regards for all of you!

Wow. I loved the article. Thank you very much. I liked Jim a lot too, and still do. Very wise, interesting and cool guy.

Great racket, it was very tough to see it on TV at the time and "before" the internet as we know it today.

The bumper on the top of the frame looked like Stich's Fischer.

Nice to have the specs too.

beast setup, love the no pws stiff hoop and flexy throat idea
as finally Head is doing recently with the Gravity.
Pro Kennex already was doing this earlier specially with
their Destiny line which became the PD and Aero lines.

The bumper guard is unique

My fave shot from Courier was him hitting and umpy
with his FH from opponents first serve. Very talented.

Isn't this the whole idea behind Prince's CTS system? I think to this day most of their modern frames are still thinner in the throat area.

Need to break out my Stars and Stripes 6.6 pro staff one of these days
Is this the racket he was really using though (Tour Classic I think it was called)? Or the original 6.0? I'm guessing the 6.6 had a softer/flexier layup, given the swing index. Even though the mold seems a little thicker than the original (judging by some pictures I found, I don't actually have it), and it also says Graphite & Kevlar on the throat.

Jim is often overlooked and underrated these days. I fear he will be remembered as Jim the commentator/interviewer instead of player, which is a shame. His game was killer. In fact, I always thought Federer's baseline game was influenced/inspired by Courier's. The way he used to run around and just blast forehands; very similar.

The racquet posted here by @Kalugin originally came from my collection, as I acquired a number of Jim's personal racquets from the 1990's. The vast majority were Wilsons but I also have a number of test racquets made for him by other manufacturers. That being said, the specifics of the layup and its use in a specific Davis Cup match from 1998 are nothing I promoted nor can attribute it to...

@Miguelin he used this racquet model in a +2 year time span. He mainly used his St. Vincent produced Pro Staff's under the original cosmetics, but also had them blacked out at the end, used a Chinese 6.0 cosmetic (short span during grass season one year) and Stars & Stripes 6.6 cosmetic (for one tournament - lost early & switched back). Here's my "historic" rundown for Courier:

You didnt, but historic specialists did. I am inclined to believe them. Very good racquet.

Do you ever play with these racquets in your collection?
Actually I'm replenishing my collection not to use these racquets in my matches and training sessions. For quarter of century I'm an avid user of 252 Fischer mold and more than happy with it!
From my huge collection i only tried Nadal and Safin)

You are welcome to believe anything you wish @Kalugin

It is myself who knows the origins of the racquet, being that I know when, where and whom it was obtained from. I've had +12 of his racquets in my collection at one time, so I'm not exactly a novice when it comes to his racquet timeline ;)

Fun fact: Both John & Pat McEnroe may have very well used a mold closely related to this one. Enjoy!

And even stating that you are not in this thread after several likes from you to some posts in this thread) Thats fun. And I wrote before its an honor for me thatbsuch a respectful man in TT is an avid fan of my threads)
Best regards and all the best!

I read a lot of threads and I don’t post and like what someone has written. You are a very disturbed person. I liked one post because it gave the true back story of the Courier racket and not your made up fantasy. You’re the one that tagged me and started in with me. I was just an observer. If you’d like I can put you on my ignore list so I don’t have to deal with your BS and made up fantasies anymore. Bye bye
