Jimmy Connors adds another ATP accredited title?

Nottingham 1976

It is looking like it is Nottingham in 1976 that has been added. But that is ridiculous - it was abandoned due to rain. It should be therefore registered as a runner-up not a tournament win. Otherwise, why is Monte-Carlo 1981 not listed as a win (it was abandoned for the same reasons)?

Nottingham 1976 vs Monte Carlo 1981

2o13 heel invitational. Well deserved.

Sorry, not quite understanding this entry. Are you referring to Nottingham 1976?

If so, what are your thoughts on Nottingham 1976 being included as a career win but not Monte Carlo 1981?

LOL, Here's your next clue, timnz. He truly wrote the book on how to win at any cost as victor.

Nottingham 76 unfinished

At 1-1 in the final set there was so much water on the court that spray was flying off the soggy balls and the pair decided to stop.
Connors 6-2; Nasty 6-4; 1-1 in the final set.

ATp gives the title to Connos ( bringing its total to 110 , mistaken ) title was not attributed , but not lost final , but the final unfinished.

I was pleased that the site atp took away the title .
Not knowing where to put the final finished ... now does not appear anywhere . Bah .

Even for me

Even for me the finals must end : not remember them all , but there is also Rotterdam 1984 (Lendl-Connors 6-0 1-0...).
Now play them no longer makes sense but the ATP should share the titles . I have no idea how to do it though . They won all probability Borg to Johannesburg, Vilas to M.Carlo, Lendl to Rotterdam, i don't know to Nottingham 76.

I do remember the Nottingham final, i heard it on BBC 2 Radio with Max Robertson doing the commentary. I recall, that they called it one of the very best grass court performances by both men. Despite the rain, which eventually finished the match at 1 all, there was incredible shotmaking, and both played very clean and pure grass court Tennis. There must have been a similar Performance by Laver and Gonzalez in the 1964 Boston US pro final, which Bud Collins recalled as great match with majestic shotmaking despite pouring rain. Maybe the best draw of all time, along with a Drobny-Patty outing in France which both ended at 20-20 in the last set.

so that makes 3 unfinished finals for connors ?
  • nottingham 1976
  • monte carlo 1991
  • rotterdam 1984
... another record ? ;)
(lendl is at 2, isn't he ?)

maybe they boosted his title total by +0.5*3 for those matches ?... ;)

Connors won another tournament in 1978

Connors had a tournament won in 1976 (Hampton) in the IPA circuit which also did not award ATP points. Salisbury and La Costa where he made the final were in the same circuit. There are more I won't look now. Even Grand Prix finals or WCT Finals had no ATP points. As long as a tournament offers prize money so it's not exhibition it needs to be counted but it's not easy finding them all. Connors also won Beckenham 1978 (defeated Stan Smith in the Final) no ATP points but with prize money. Would be his 111th.

Indian Wells 1980

Also in Indian Wells (Rancho Mirage) in 1980 not disputed the final, the tournament was interrupted to the semifinals (rain)
Semifinalists: Brian Teacher - Jimmy Connors - Peter Fleming - Gene Mayer

That´s interesting for what I want to know about IPA tournaments. Hampton neither awarded ATP points in 1975?

While most of the Connors 's wins are from the ATP, Grand Prix or WCT tours, I believe the following 21 titles can be attributed to the USLTA/USTA/IPA Bill Riordan winter indoor circuit: 72- Jacksonville, Roanoke, 73- Baltimore, Roanoke, Salt Lake, Salisbury, Hampton, Paramus, 74- Roanoke, Little Rock, Birmingham, Salisbury, Hampton, Salt Lake City, Tempe, 75- Birmingham, Salisbury, Boca, Hampton, 76- Birmingham, Hampton.

Obviously finals which are abandoned shouldn't be counted as titles for either of the 2 players involved.

It's interesting that Nastase still dominated his match-up against Connors in 1976, despite the fact that Connors was the clearly the best player in the world that year (I think he played better tennis that year than he did in 1974):

Salisbury Final – Nastase def. Connors 6-2 6-3 7-6
Hampton Final – Connors def. Nastase 6-2 6-2 6-2
La Costa Final – Nastase def. Connors 4-6 6-0 6-1
Nottingham Final – Abandoned at 1-1 in the 3rd set
Pepsi Grand Slam Semi-Final – Nastase def. Connors 0-6 6-4 7-5
Caracas Final – Nastase def. Connors 6-1 6-3

So not including that abandoned Nottingham final, Nastase won 4 out of their other 5 matches that year. Connors only started to turn things around and beat him regularly after he was well into his 30s.

The fact they were such good friends and regularly praticed with each other and played doubles together meant that Nasty knew Jimbo's game inside out. It was eventually Jimbo's mom who had to spell that out for him.
