Jimmy Connors Definitive Collection

KG1965

Legend
With this thread I mean make a list of all titols won by Connors replacing in practice my previous thread called "The Connors's 107 titles are for me" as they passed.

This is because the famous 109 and 149 reported on Wikipedia needs to be done further thought to approach the thing certain tournament won by Connors.

Premise: one must divide the titles obtained from:
• ATP titles,
• titles no-ATP draws > 4
• titles no atp draws4
• exhibitions between 2 players.

Chapter 1 - ATP titles

The list of Wikipedia is accurate but there are 7 titles that do not have the features of the current Master 250 and must be deducted:
- Roanoke 1972
- Roanoke 1973
- Manchester 1974
- Salt Lake City 1974
- Birmingham 1974
- Birmingham 1975
- Tel Aviv 1989

109 - 7 = 102 titles.

These are the ATP titles that Connors won and which are not inferior to a Master 250 of low current level.
He won another 15 or 20 low tournaments, but we can not remove them should be removed because some titles also Lendl, Federer and the other champions.

Chapter 2 - no-ATP titles with draws more than 4

The list of Wikipedia is accurate , nevertheless two titles:
- Beaver Creek, that seems to have been 4draws and not 8draws in 1983,
- Asuncion 1979, has not been won ,
then 24-2 = 22

EL MUNDO DEPORTIVO - 3 october 1979
CONÑORS, LESIONADO PECCI GANOEL . «TROFEO .

Of these 4 have characteristics of Master 250 and must be deducted :
- Ocean City 1972
- Beckenham 1978
- Tokyo Gunze 1978
- Stowe 1985.

22 - 4 = 18 titles.

Chapter 3 - no-ATP titles with draws 4

The list of Wikipedia is accurate except two titles:
- Napa Valley that was a exhibition to 2 players and then must be removed
- Beaver Creek 1983 no 8draws, but 4draws
16 -1 +1 = 16 .

Of these only 4 Suntory Cup and the rich Sun City we have characteristics of such historical importance and which I think should be within the Master 250 .

5 titles .

Chapter 4 and last , the exhibitions .

Wikipedia lists 31 , but only 6 of these were really important , at least as a Master 250 :
- 4 organized by Riordan between 1975 and 1977 ( in Las Vegas against Laver , Newcombe and Orantes + Puerto Rico against Nastase )
- Buenos Aires in 1979 against Vilas
- San Diego against Lendl in 1984 .

I have not included the exhibitons against Borg in 1982 and 1983 because the Swede was about to abandon his career , even if they are good matches .

Have not characteristics from Master250: 48 titles, of which
• 7 ATP titles
• 15 titles no- ATP (4 draws with> 4 & 11 with 4draws)
• 26 exhibitions

Have characteristics from Master250: 51 titles, of which
• 39 ATP titles
• 10 no- ATP titles (with 18 draws> 4 & 5 with 4draws)
• 2 exhibitions

Some of these are not to be underestimated as historical events, and discreetly seeding as Los Angeles, 82 & 84, San Francisco, Cincinnati, Salisbury and Sydney or the successful challenge against Vilas in Buenos Aires in 79.

Total:
• 7 + 39 = 46 ATP titles
• 15 + 10 = 25 ATP titles no-
• 26 + 2 = 28 exhibitions
46 + 25 + 28 = 99

In my opinion 99 are in conclusion to consider shortly.

179-99 = 80

80 instead have a specific gravity greater than amazing because almost all current Master500.

Have things changed since the 70 and 80 today, the Australian was cheap, the Masters were two but only the Masters of NY and only since 1977 had all the best, the most important tournaments, no-majors are not the current ones, apart from some edition of Philadelphia no tournament had 9 of the top 10 as the current Master1000, there was no obligation to participate in Master1000 as now so there was less competition but the best players sometimes jumping tournaments comparable to Master1000, performances were important and basically a circuit part of special events no- ATP.

Its hard to essentially excluding 2 Wimbledon, 5 US Open and the Masters GP 77, support those of 72 titles (80-8) may have been comparing them with Master1000 now.

Connors 's career is divided almost in 4 phases :
1. 1972-75 explosion
2. 1976-78 top years
3. 1979-81 decline with the defeats suffered against the phenomenal Borg
4. 1982-84 resurrection and return to the top

1972-75
The early years are easy to attribute such titles may have been comparable to tournaments superior to the current Master 500 .

From 1972 to 1975 only the Queen's is considered a master500 despite the participation of a number of Stan Smith and future champions like Solomon , Gottfried , Panatta , Tanner , Vilas .
The other tournaments are won by Connors essentially comparable to Master1000 , including the Dewar Cup 74 which replaced Wembley , as well as the two challenge matches in Las Vegas 75 .

1976-78
From 1976 to 1978
I think the titles comparable to Master500 can be 7:
- Denver 76 and 78 ,
- The two challenge matches vs Orantes and Nastase , unless the two historians of 1975
- Maui 77 , St. Louis WCT 77 and Birmingham (England) 78 , despite having a good seeding but prize money and ATP points from the best tournaments .

1 (Queen's 72)+7=8

1979-81
From 1979 to 1981, "the Borg Era", I think they are comparable to Master500 :
- the Tournament of Champions , round robin to 6 players (5 matches + final) , is good but not enough to be a Master1000 ,
- Birmingham 80, was certainly comparable to Master1000 but had two great defections just before leaving ,
- Frejus and Melbourne , were two good 8draws tournament no-ATP but not Master1000 ,
- the Suntory Cup 80 & 81( also won in 83 and 86 ) was always excellent but 4draws ,
- Brussels 81 and Rotterdam 81 definitely not Master1000.
Two tournaments of 1981 have some concerns :
- London Wembley and La Quinta had two great finals , London Wembley gave more points and more dollars to La Quinta, but La Quinta had a much better seeding .
I choose London Wembley Master1000. La Quinta no.

9+8=17

1982-84
From 1982 to 1984
- Montreal Molson 82 , North Miami 82 and Toronto Molson 83 have been three great events no-ATPthat reach Master1000.
- Suntory Cup 83.

Two tournaments of 1982 have some concerns :
- Monterrey was one of the first tournaments of the year , but also very rich seed the Queen's was much better , with a grand final .
I put Monterrey Master1000 although the Queen's was more difficult to win .

On two other tournaments I have strong doubts :
- La Quinta 84 & Queen's 83 had a great seeding , especially the London tournament with all the strongest including both Mac and Lendl defeated markedly from Jimmy , just two ATP tournaments did not attribute points as the first 15 tournaments .

Therefore I exclude both, although the Queen's was one of the earliest events in 1983 .

17+7=24

Now just add the Suntory Cup 1986 despite the participation of 4 of the top 5 ( 1 Lendl , Connors 3 , 4 Wilander , Edberg 5 ) is a draws4 therefore I do not consider it a Master1000 .

24-1=25

55 titles > Master500

1973: (3) BOSTON (US PRO), LOS ANGELES, JOHANNESBURG

1975: (3) LAS VEGAS CHALLENGE MATCH vs LAVER, LAS VEGAS CHALLENGE MATCH vs NEWCOMBE, NORTH CONWAY

So , we summarize..

Total 185 between titles and exhibitions.

Have not characteristics from Master250 : 54 titles , of which
• 7 ATP titles
• 15 titles no- ATP ( 4 with draws > 4 & 11 with 4draws )
• 32 exhibitions

Have characteristics at least Master250 : 131 titles , of which
• 102 ATP Titles
• 23 titles no- ATP ( 18 with draws > 4 & 5 with 4draws )
• 6 exhibitions

these are divided into ..

Have characteristics from Master250 : 51 titles , of which
• 39 ATP Titles
• 10 titles no- ATP ( 9 with draws > 4 & 1 with 4draws )
• 2 exhibitions

Have characteristics from Master500 : 25 titles , of which
• 14 ATP Titles
• 9 titles no- ATP ( 5 with draws > 4 & 4 with 4draws )
• 2 exhibitions

Have characteristics from BIG TITLES (Majors, Finals, Master1000) : 55 titles , of which
• 49 ATP Titles
• 4 titles no- ATP ( with draws > 4 )
• 2 exhibitions

The work is to be considered terminated .

Now , perhaps , James Scott Connors is more understandable .
I think it can be useful to shed light on the 70s & 80s , having the American crossed the two decades .

Looking back, then, the way Connors "the ferryman" is entered in the history of tennis and you notice that
• many of the famous 109 are not good tournaments and some jokes, but many no-ATP are good or greats and also some of the exhibitions given on Wikipedia;
• at the time they were playing ... always, almost every week of the year in both of those tournaments or GP, or WCT, or IPA or exhibition;
• was a period anarchist but lively;
• prizes of ATP tournaments were very low and the players were forced to earn dollars elsewhere;
• in the first years the real opponent of James Scott (over friend Nastase, the American suffered particularly Ilie) was the ATP that declared war and to which Connors sued (including Ashe and Kramer) winning it;
• Wimbledon and US Open were the two real World Championships but the points difference compared to the ATP tournaments as Palm Springs, Philadelphia, Indianapolis and Washington was narrow;
• tournaments or exhibitions were largely indoors;
• Connors, Mac, Borg, Lendl and Nastase filled arenas while playing against the number 20 ranking.

My personal Definitive Collection closes with a summary of his career:

THE EXPLOSION

1973
In BOSTON (US PRO) won the first great tournament beating Ashe to 5th.
At the end of year is clearly behind Nastase and Newcombe but from September onwards wins the two most important tournaments and preparing to overcome the two champions (JOHANNESBURG, but especially LOS ANGELES, which in 1973 is perhaps the 2nd tournament of the year after US Open).

1974
The AUSTRALIAN OPEN winning is not really a major (the best are only Newcombe and Borg).
WIMBLEDON and FOREST HILLS (US OPEN) instead apply double the present just because the Australian has no weight and the French did not have much importance.
He scoops other BIG TITLES practically won all those in which it participates 4 of 4 (INDIANAPOLIS, LOS ANGELES, DEWAR CUP JOHANNESBURG), skips the other to participate in the circuit Riordan (IPA).

1975 is essentially divided into two periods:
- the first six months are substantially tournaments circuit Riordan of preparation to two challenges in LAS VEGAS winning vs. Laver and Newcombe,
- in the second half Jimbo loses all the finals in the important tournaments in which he participates (WIMBLEDON, US OPEN, DEWAR CUP, STOCKHOLM).

TOP YEARS

1976
In both real majors, won in FOREST HILLS (US OPEN) an amazing match against Borg on clay, while Tanner loses to WIMBLEDON,
Wins virtually all other BIG TITLES in which it participates (from PHILADELPHIA, to PALM SPRINGS through INDIANAPOLIS and WASHINGTON and ending with WEMBLEY)
At the end of the year, double the points on the second ATP (Borg).

1977
Finally participates in the WCT circuit, winning in BIRMINGHAM and ST.LOUIS, the Masters of DALLAS, and the CHALLENGE CUP (tie-break 5th set vs Tanner). The Dallas Masters was a great tournament and was at the level of the GP Masters until 1976 but both were not the best as is the GP Masters since 1977.
The masterpiece performing it in New York where will gather the top three of 77 with Vilas lead thanks to a terrific season, Borg who won only Wimbledon, and Connors who dominated the WCT.
The last game of the year decided the big win against the Borg MASTERS GRAND PRIX, which finally becomes a tournament involving all the best.

1978
It's clash against Borg who is preparing to overtake.
Connors had a great start to a winning PHILADELPHIA (US PRO INDOOR), MEMPHIS (US NATIONAL INDOOR) and ROTTERDAM, but Borg had won everything in Europe, surpassing Connors to WIMBLEDON.
After WIMBLEDON Bjorn goes astray and Connors took the opportunity, it lose more and demolishes the Swede in FLUSHING MEADOWS (US OPEN) after off McEnroe in the semifinals.
The ATP awarded Connors at the end of the year but maybe the best is Bjorn.

THE BORG ERA

1979
Jimbo part as usual very strong in the indoor season - BIRMINGHAM WCT, PHILADELPHIA (US PRO INDOOR) and MEMPHIS (US NATIONAL INDOOR);
in May is still firmly number one ATP.
But then it suffers a sharp fall, and Borg and Mac him disintegrate.
The Borg '79 is the best Borg ever, plays much deeper and has a great service.
Mac is divine and unbeatable in hc.
Connors instead is unrecognizable, playing badly and seems awkward and fulminant decline.
It seems to have aged 10 years in one year.

1980
Connors has a gasp.
He can not beat Borg but is closer to Sweden because he plays better than in 1979, he's bridges the gap with Mac beating in PHILADELPHIA (US PRO INDOOR) and MASTER DALLAS WCT in two memorable finals.

1981
Bad year, Jimbo worsens again, it seems to be over.
Significant wins only to LA QUINTA defeating a young Czechoslovakian: Ivan Lendl.
Towards the end of the year it manages to reassemble 2 sets to 0 the number one in the world who has since become Supermac, winning in LONDON WEMBLEY.
Swan song?

THE RESURRECTION

In 1982 he completed his masterpiece .
A good start by beating Mac in 5 sets to ROSEMONT CHICAGO (CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS) , doubling the QUEEN'S and winning WIMBLEDON eight years later, and returns after more than three years number one in FLUSHING MEADOWS (US OPEN) drenched before Vilas and then Lendl .
At year end, it is exceeded in the rankings from Mac only because Jimbo focuses on exhibitions against Borg and tournaments no-ATP .
In essence he is the number one .

In 1983 again he plays great tennis .
Are years where the champions often snub the ATP circuit in favor of many no-ATP tournaments and various exhibitions , Connors will win many.
But above all he won the 100th ATP tournament, beating Lendl in the US Open.

1984
It's the last great year .
Nothing against a Mac that lets the crumbs , but manages to win the 7th US NATIONAL INDOOR in MEMPHIS and beats for the last time Lendl to TOKYO (SEIKO) 6-0 in the 3th set.
