JJ Wolf is legit good

Wolfman J.J avoided a stay at the LAFLYNM, backing up the admirable run to the Firenze final with a win in straight sets in Stockholm over the lefty Molcan. He will play #5 seed AdM in 2R tomorrow.

He plays a kid definitely going to have a great results on fast hard and indoor hard courts over his career. Going to be a top 50 guy for the next decade. While I don’t think he will ever win a major title or be seeded at a slam. He is going to have a great career and hopefully win a tournament or two during his career. He sadly is close to maxing out his “game”. He has became a beast physically has some the fastest racket speed on tour.

That slider serve down the T on ad points is wicked! Must have wrists of steel to pull that off, which is not surprising as he obviously lifts a bit. That dedication to the gym let him fit in when he played as a Buckeye.

I'm Wolf, I solve problems.

Not sure what dad bod you are referring to. This guy is the most shredded guy on tour.

Lol come on, I love JJ but his body figure looks more like someone downing coke and fries by the pool.
He has got the body shape of a fridge.
Its probably just genetic but he doesnt look that athletic at all.

My point was that JJ Wolf seems to have all the major components that could lead to success on tour (and mental strength is a big one), not that you absolutely HAVE to be particularly mentally strong to break into top 50.
He is already 24, by 26 will have injuries(already see something black on right ankle) and will be out sadly. Also not tall for this generation. Unless he is freakishly strong like Wavrinka, not taking out Sinner, Korda or Alcaraz

That wolf logo got smaller recently like his hair, he was looking like a new Agassi
Maybe time for 107 inches and coach Andre.

thats a harsh, pro tennis is not easy, he has great talent and works hard enough
probably could have been a great batter in pro baseball even for his height
Tennis is after all the most complicated and demanding of all sports

honestly he's still doing quite well, despite some notable injuries and surgeries in his early pro years

as far as i'm aware, i was one of (if not the) most optimistic in my projections for his career in this thread, saying he'd be better than kudla and maybe approach seppi in his ATP career

that's still a reasonable take (as below), I think, despite his physical setbacks

no one, no one, thought he was going to be some top 10 juggernaut, so of course he still isn't

Wolf - career high 39 - ATP W/L 44-51 - $2.34M
Kudla - career high 53 - ATP WL 72-132 - $4.63M
Seppi - career high 18 - ATP W/L 386-422 - $11.82M

seems to me like he still has a reasonable chance of ending up with a career somewhere between kudla and seppi

mug...no

a guy like Fritz / Paul / Shelton...also no...and I think exactly 0 people expected that

He’s nothing special. Might enjoy some immediate success. Get a few wins. But if he gets good enough to be “studied”, the tour will eat him alive.

My guess is he won’t last 2 years on tour

i think he's likely to have a lot more success than you're giving him credit for
my lower bound / realistic case for his career: denis kudla (hangs around 100 in the world for a good long time)
my upper bound / optimistic case for his career: seppi or pouille (peaks around 10-20 in the world, makes 10 million on tour)

---------------------------------------------------------------

just to copy/paste some opinions from many thread page 4, August 2020

no one was arguing whether he was going to be Agassi or Sampras...we were arguing whether he'd be a top 100 guy or be retired in 2 years

Does he even play anymore?
He just qualified for Roland Garros before losing in R1 to Alcaraz (little shame there) and is at 106 in the world

People act like he’s dead, sheesh, he’s currently ranked higher than Goffin, Shapo, and Garin

Anyone suggesting those three players don’t play anymore?

I only see him losing all the time. he's 1-7 this year. And I am suggesting that those three players would kick his ass. Nice mullet, though.

Sure, 1-7 in ATP main draws, a pretty selective representation of his output

Considering he was 3-1 at RG, having blazed his way through the three rounds of qualifying

As a multimillionaire who has been in the top 40 and remains around 100 in the world, and has made 250+k not counting his endorsements in the first half of this year, I somewhat doubt he’s sweating your opinion too much, enjoy your day job

Take it easy, I was mainly joking. I actually like Wolf, but his results of late are horrible. The matches I’ve seen have been awful and he has clearly lost his mojo. That’s my point.

Are you his dad or something?

Just someone that is pointing out that your shots at him are lame - ie ‘does he even play anymore’ ‘nice mullet’ ’players [ranked lower than him] would kick his ass’ lolz lolz lolz

He’s still 106 in the world, hardly has disappeared or fallen off a rankings cliff.

And he played 7 sets at RG against players not named Alcaraz. Lost one in a TB. Won the other six: 6-3,6-3,6-2,6-2,6-1,6-1

On arguably his least favorite surface

I’d say he’s doing alright - not every meaningful pro tennis match occurs in GS and Masters 1000 main draws - again, as guys like Goffin and Shapo can attest to

He not doing allright. And he lost (but won two) in the qualifying rounds of The French, he came into the main draw as a lucky loser. His career is in a fownward spiral, and I hope he’ll fix his poor form before he’s out of The top 100.

whoops - didnt realize the flipped result of third round RG qualies and the LL entry - my error
likewise, as mentioned, he's currently already slightly out of the top 100 - and has been at many different points in his young career - which is hardly the end of the world

regardless of our factual errors above, i guess i'm just not sure what people taking shots at him expect form this guy - he's a career 50-125 guy most likely - which still amounts to a pretty good living - and I'm unaware of folks who really predicted much more of him than that

it's kind of like criticizing Al Horford for not being Kyrie Irving ... ok, we all agree, he's not ever going to be, and???

I don’t know who those people are. And, my apologies, I meant top 200. My bad.

No worries, silly argument perhaps from both of us - I don’t think either of us expects Wolf to be a perennial top 50 guy - and he’s not - was just using a pro basketball analogy to make that point

But, making a decent career for himself in tennis, which is no easy feat

I agree with most of what you said about Wolf and the expectations, but mentioning how much money he has made, and comparing it to the hypothetical income of someone on the forum.... that's just lame. I honestly don't understand people who immediately bring up athlete/celebrity income as a defense against criticism from normal people.

Anyway, I like and root for JJ most of the time, but he is currently moving in the wrong direction, as evidenced by his ranking. I can understand him struggling on the clay and grass, but his hardcourt start to the year was surprisingly bad.

I think you'll find I reserve that line of argument, rarely, for the type of person who is themselves taking lame shots at an athlete

ie, as mentioned previously
'does he even play play anymore?' & '[so and so lower ranked players] would kick his ass' & 'nice mullet'

'does he even play anymore?' isn't a real question - it's just an adult acting like a 3 year old and taking a cheap shot that they think for some reason is humorous - five seconds of googling shows he's still around 100 in the world and quite active

such folks aren't worthy of showing any respect, when they aren't showing any respect towards the athletes they're criticizing - so yeah, i can go low also

That's a hyperbolic statement, made in jest. But I know that can be hard to pick up on sometimes...

what, all three of the statements? not hard to pick up on, just a dude being a twat

or, said differently, to borrow your sentence structure from above

I honestly don't understand people who [tell other people they're having a hard time picking up on hyperbole / sarcasm / etc] as a defense [for people who weren't actually using an clever sarcasm / hyperbole / etc, but rather just being a twat]

Wow, seriously? You really think he didn't know that Wolf is still playing? He just played Alcaraz at the French Open, which is very high profile. And that poster definitely follows the sport pretty closely.

i do think he knew wolf was still playing - and just made that comment to be a twat, while also making fun of his hair and estimating that lower ranked players than him would kick his ass - which is why i responded in kind - try to follow along here, dingus

while you may enjoy crediting him for his creativity in going after wolf - there’s no requirement for me to do so - sometimes being an ass is just being an ass and doesn’t need to be celebrated with an honorary doctor of letters

And now you are calling me "dingus"? Seriously? It seems to me as if you are the one that has failed to grasp the typical tone of the comments on these forums. Poking fun at JJ Wolf is absolutely par for the course around here. Asking if he is still playing, and making fun of his hair, is completely innocuous and typical. Or did you already forget that Wolf is a millionaire living a great life, so he is absolute fair game for some ribbing.
