JJ Wolf is legit good

oh give it a year or two, no one here predicting great tour level results from him immediately - and he came through qualifying, not like he lost his only match this tournament, he had a productive week
Exactly. Getting through qualifying is huge. I’d say he should see this as a very good week.

But he’s new. The guys don’t know his game yet. The real test will be when “the book” is out on him. Will he be able to adapt and win then? Most guys can’t.

Anyone have thoughts on the young Korda? I’m a little higher on Wolf since Korda has presumably been groomed for tennis since birth and he’s not exactly on schedule to be a force. He did win the junior Australian Open, as they were just talking about on tv, but since then, not much.

I think Nakashima is also going to be great, but I’m not sure how one argues that he’s currently “better.” ATP rankings and challenger titles (4>0) would beg to differ.

Obviously FAA is in a different class of success so far than these young Americans.
definitley true he is prob not better at this point prob recency bias with me on what he did in charlotte and going into the break and because he is so young. Yeah too many american flameouts. Still remember Donaldson, he was really moving up into the top 50s then got hurt. Hopefully one of these young ones will be better.

korda also should be excellent - see this challenger final vs wolf:

i'll be honest, though, JJ has also been groomed for tennis for a very long time (i'm not sure i'm totally on board with the late-to-tennis narrative that has been suggested)
the wolf family runs MW sports in cincy (one of the primary TW competitors, sorry moderators only bringing it up in the context of wolf, support TW!), and is a tennis family with pro tennis in their blood - plus he had another elite junior with a pro tennis mother in mcnally to train alongside in cincy as they grew up together - he's been groomed for pro tennis for a long time

Hmm. I didn’t know that about ******* Sports. I just read an article that played up his family members’ involvement in other sports, particularly football. Made it sound like he was more interested in the other sports. Probably just the family downplaying the tennis focus to avoid the extra pressure. kinda like Tennys Sandgren claiming he wasn’t named after tennis, though his father and mother were pro players. Well, now that I think about it, I think I read that his great grandfather was named Tennys. So never mind.

Interesting!

Was it a “ routine” 4&4? Did Gasquet only work as hard as he had to? Or was it actually close? Did it feel like Wolf “could” win?

Someone else will have to answer that. I didn't see it because TC sucks. From the sound of it, Wolf was really crushing the forehand. Score is kind of what I expected from a veteran like Gasquet.

I think he has raw potential and I want to get behind this guy, just goes way too nuts though.

He's still raw for sure. Has a lot of room for improvement, but I definitely see potential. Good mental strength; went down 0-30 after breaking, then came back to win four straight points.

I think his issue is shot selection, not the fact he doesn't have a tool kit full of things that can get the job done.

I see shot selection as something you learn with more experience and maturity. He was playing mostly NCAA players just a year ago. Hoping he will fine tune shot selection the longer he plays on tour. He doesn't really have a slice; would love to see him develop one.

No, it was boring me. What's going on now ?? is Pella giving up ??

feddie is just mad and jealous, as he's predicted a thousand recent stanford players would make it on tour (bruch, clayton, thacher, geller, etc) and none are half as good as wolf - even bradley klahn is still getting taken to the woodshed by folks like sumit nagal, couple of breadsticks today

he'll have his chance in the next match as well, facing the winner of f lopez and a spanish grinder - with one more win he'd join guys like kudla and dzumhur in the 110-120 range, which would be frankly pretty incredible so early in his career

I liked what I saw. If he can refine his game he's got potential. I like that he is slightly unorthodox and doesn't swing like a tennis player.

Powerful stocky, not George Costanza stocky.

i like the guy's attitude also - he looks like he thinks he not only belongs but expects to win every time he takes the court - 'powerful stocky' fits and reminds me of how agassi walked around the court like it was his domain (i'm not saying he's the next agassi, don't shoot me)

i can see some not liking his 'swag' - mullet, walking around between points with his chest puffed out, etc

but he's not a brat, i don't think, generally very professional on court from what i've seen - have seen little to no tantrums / racquet-smashing / yelling at coach or player box - so i can tolerate the bravado

Yeah, he kind of reminds me of Bryce Harper. That ironic macho thing. Distinctly American. Could see him in a monster truck. Respectful though. It’ll be a nice contrast seeing him take on a pretentious Frenchmen.

I think 13 aces and a bunch of serves that led to easy winners. Pretty solid for a stocky 6 ft. guy.
Guy is a 6 ft. ace machine.
Have seen him play multiple times including his first loss of season at the hands of Fenty last year and even at his last game he played in 2019 as a college athlete. Very solid server no doubt about that and I'm team JJ myself. That said, he is definitely inch or inch and half shorter than 6 foot (even more impressive how he serves). Is billed at 6' in ATP profile but almost everyone pads it there (just look at Schwartzman at 5'7" when he is closer to 5'5" - my wife who is 5'7" was hovering over him in a few pics). Pella too is billed at 6 foot however he is legit that tall and he was a good inch or so taller than JJ at net after the match.

We need to start a petition for his hair style though. That hairdo gotta go, lol.

My take is he was never a brat even in college either when he was a pretty popular name and everyone knew he would turn pro. From what I saw, great mannerisms. I remember seeing his reactions when he beat A&M's Kypson and Kypson spit in his own hand and then tried to shake Wolf's hand like a punk back in freshman year for both. Wolf stayed calm afterwards, no emotions. Really liked that. Not a fan of his mullet though but I mean, you gotta do what you gotta do and I'm okay with it. His tennis is giving us something to cheer for.
