JJ Wolf is legit good

JJ looked strong in his first set against Milos and had a chance to break for the set on a second serve. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out and he then lost the set in a tiebreaker. He then lost all of the momentum in the second set. Tough loss. Interested to see where he plays next. His play style is fun to watch.

Dude is just being a pest

if his point that he wants to shove down our throats is that there’s not a 100% guarantee Wolf and his ranking will continue to improve, you win, great contribution!

there’s an overwhelming chance he will

Wolf highest ranking is 120th... He is currently at 122nd. He also lost to Alexei Popyrin, ranks 109, on Oct 17th.

Oh wow, he’s two spots below his career high, god help him!

you really thought you had some gotcha moment based on a tiny short-term ranking variation? Let me know if he doesn’t have a new career high 6 months from now

Will JJ Wolf have a better career than Steve Johnson?

This is not a troll question.

He seems like he could be a dangerous player up to a certain level, but will he reach that top 20 to 30 range? Win a couple tour level titles?

Hard to predict. So much depends on how hungry Wolf is to succeed, especially when he consistently faces stiffer competition. I'm still a big fan of his game though. Optimistically, I'd say the potential is definitely there.

Wolf is so good that he lost to Roman Rishatovich Safiullin today who is currently ranked 184th.

For somebody who's not a fan, you seem to follow Wolf very, very closely ...

I was a big fan of Wolf, until Summer 2019, because Wolf attended my alma mater, the Ohio State University. Wolf and OSU should have won both the single and team NCAA that year. They lost to an inferior team. In single competition, Wolf lost to a freshman from U. of Florida.

Wolf has always an under achiever. I would like to be proven wrong but I've been right so far about Wolf.

he has been on tour full time for functionally less than a year, given the degradation of this year's calendar d/t Covid

those of us that think he has a lot of potential haven't been proven right, far from it
those like you that think every loss proves he's a bust haven't been proven right either, far from it
give it a rest for a few months

and Wolf didn't lose the match against UNC - you know that well - and so do I, since I was there in person - maybe talk to McNally and others about that loss if you're still upset about it, not the guy who won his matches at 1 singles and 1 doubles

Isn't he the one that hooked the Illini on a ball a half-foot inside the baseline? Lack of character indicates a lack of meddle. Neither he nor his 80s mullet impress me.

he was not, that was McNally

any more nonsense we can blame JJ for?

OSU losing to UNC in NCAAs? oh, he won both his matches, #1 singles and #1 doubles...

famous bad college tennis line call? oh that was mcnally, who was also the one that lost the clinching singles point vs UNC...

maybe both of you guys need to be in a support group where you learn not to blame Wolf for all the **** McNally does :)

Support group? For asking a question? Are you a Buckeye? I ask because you apparently don't understand the syntax related to the punctuation referred to as a question mark. Notice, I asked if you were a Buckeye. Also, do you have a mullet? Typical Buckeye nonsense. :)

i have no relation to OSU

just think it’s humorous all the random crap people are trying to pin on Wolf in this thread, and thus tongue-in-cheek suggested a support group for you fools

your post wasn’t an innocent question, you took a shot at his character based on wrong information, now you’ve been corrected, sit down

I made an observation based on inaccurate information, which I couched. You got personally insulting. I responded in-kind.

This up and coming American has real potential. I'm not in the habit of hyping up American youngsters, but I think Wolf is the real deal; he has the athleticism, the physicality, no glaring weaknesses, and most importantly, the mental strength to break into the top 50 at least. Excited to follow his journey in the upcoming few years.

So what's going on with JJ?

Idk what savages keep bumping these old threads making stupid claims, but I'm here for it and laugh every time. Another one that aged like poop.

I typically am too, but you should join the hype train. It’s really fun and may have hit a little snag, but it’s going to eventually pull away from the station, hopefully, maybe.

He's certainly an interesting character. Probably not top ten caliber but should hype be strictly reserved for future top teners? That would be a very limited amount of hypeworthy players.

agreed, we can have fun hype-ing up-and-comers, even if they're not future top 10 players or GS champions...in fact i don't think anyone has proposed that he'll reach those of those grander metrics, even some of the more vocal supporters

in August of 2020, when he was having a good run pre-surgery, I had posted the following:
"my lower bound / realistic case for his career: denis kudla (hangs around 100 in the world for a good long time)
my upper bound / optimistic case for his career: seppi or pouille (peaks around 10-20 in the world, makes 10 million on tour) "

i still think that's a reasonable take, though i wish i hadn't used the two words "lower bound" and had just said realistic take - certainly it's possible he has more health issues in the future, and doesn't achieve what kudla has achieved - calling that a "lower bound" was probably a mistake and disrespectful to kudla

but a guy who spends a good long time around 100 in the world - yeah, i think that's still very realistic for a 22-yr-old who has reached #120 and currently sits at #151 after a surgery set him back, and reached the 3rd rd of the USO in his first full year as a pro, having already won 4 challenger titles

he has time - no one said he's the next coming of Roddick - let me know in 10 years if he hasn't spent a handful of years in the top 100 and made millions on tour

I don't see it man...just another standard American with a dime a dozen forehand and serve.
I'll tell you who I do believe in...Brando Commando Nakashima. I saw him play Zverev at last year's USO and was so impressed. The mental strength, angles, and insistence to force Zverev to play his patterns at that age were top notch. The only thing I don't like about him is his movement.

I don't get the feeling this will age poorly.

Nakashima just beat up on isner in straight sets to reach the final of Los Cabos and a new career high of 115, agreed he’s impressive

I'm way higher on Nakashima than I am on Wolf. No doubt in my mind he'll be a top twenty stalwart in a few years. Probably like a Busta level guy. Wolf is more of an interesting wild card.

Nakashima is probably a safer bet, I’ll give you that

but their run up the rankings was on a pretty similar trajectory pre-Wolf-surgery, and Wolf showed he’s still right there with him in his first match back, so I’m not sure I see that much of a difference in their potential - yes, if you ask me today who wins more titles or achieves a higher peak ranking, I’ll go Nakashima, but I don’t think either guy has a peak ranking more than 10-15 spots better than the other guy when all is said and done, and I don’t think either guy is PCB

I see Nakashima having a slightly lightly better-than-Fritz, worse than Korda type career. I see Wolf having a worse than Fritz, Tiafoe/Tommy Paul level career if he stays healthy.

Not to be the boy who cried Wolf, but I expect JJ to cut down John slenderman Isner today in Atlanta. If I'm wrong I will promptly banish JJ from my consciousness.

Oh my; who's this Wolf person playing Isner? Love the hair; business in the front, party in the back! So Agassi, taking me back 30 years! :p

could they organize some sort of a summer trip for kids or something? To fill the stands a bit? This is depressing.....

mighty close but no cigar - I thought isner was going to take him down in a battle of TBs - surprisingly Wolf won the only TB but dropped his serve a couple times

Wolf had a crack at a break or two but Jonak Servovic stepped it up. Isner is a perfect gatekeeper.

Isner's a throwback to a past generation only seen in MOVIETIME reels of players who did little but SERVE BIG! He actually has some groundie chops, but for the most part he can't win without serving 30+ aces a match! Back in the 70's he would be right at home conversing with Roscoe Tanner, John Alexander, & Colin Dibley OTTH!
