Anyone heard of anything like this before. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won 3 singles matches in two different tournaments today. In the Stella-Artois 1st round qualifying he won 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 against Goodall. Then he went to the Surbiton Challenger where he beat Chris Guccione 5-7,6-4,7-6 in the semi-final. After that, back to Stella-Artois for 2nd round of qualifying which he won 6-1, 6-1. Three matches in one day, and two three setters!!!

I hope he doesn't have much left against Karlovic in the Surbiton finals tomorrow.

Tsonga I remeber his match against Roddick also at the French in 2005. He got a big game but isn't a great mover. But is your typical low ranked French player. Plays alot in France on the challenger level there.

A big win over Chris G is a good one espically on grass. Taking out Goodall must of pissed of some britons.

and Tsonga follows it up with crushing straight sets win over Bastl in 3rd round qualifying and then crosses town to Surbiton and cruises past Karlovic 6-4, 7-6 in final.

Where has this guy been hiding?!

Is he trying to become a grass specialist? This is quite impressive. Downing the big serving Croat in straights and qualifying for the Queen's club tourney in the same day.

I reneber during his match against Roddick at FO in '05 P-mac said that Jo W has the game to be a good grass court player

Yeah, I didn't see that match at the French. But I did see him play Roddick at the Aussie and boy was I impressed. It looked like he was getting to Roddick. He's got a big game. Big forehand and a decent serve. The two most important tools to do some damage on a grass court. I'm anxious to see who he draws the first round.

Ive been following Tsonga for about 5-6 years now, i remember it was him and Baghdatis like the Federer/Nadal of Juniors. I think Baggy had the slight edge tho, and its taken Tsonga alot longer to break through than Baggy, but i'm sure he will be well known soon, id like to see a Tsonga/Baggy match now though, see how they have improved

Tsonga has been pretty unfortunate with injuries which is why he hasn't been seen on the tour much.

Really. That's pretty interesting. I'd like to see tsonga play again too, I forgot what grip he used on forehands, but it looked pretty close to continental.

Really want to see how he does this tournament.

He should win his first round, but he will have the defending champ to deal with in the second round.

That is right they did play at AO. He played well and give Roddick a run for his money.

does anyone have other examples of such a situation where a guy plays 2 tournaments the same day ?...

Looks like he's going to sweep past Pless, up 7-6, 4-0 before the score disappeared online. Next comes Hewitt. I think with the roll that's he's on you'd have to see him as a favorite in that match. Call me Crazy.

Just read an article about Tsonga at the Stella Artois homepage. Apparently including challengers and qualifying tournaments he has now won 29 of his last 30 matches! That's Federesque. Hewitt must be trembling right now. He'll probably think up some new injury so he can skip out of the match against the Tsonganator :p .

Yeah, that is just down right scary. I'd love to see him take Lleyton out and then go on to whip up on Roddick. Let him have some vindication for that AO match.

A-Rod insult claims ruled out

January 17, 2007 12:00am

AUSTRALIAN Open officials yesterday dismissed reports Andy Roddick had verbally abused his young French opponent Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a tetchy first-round match at Melbourne Park.

Sixth seed Roddick was widely said to have bellowed insults at wildcard Tsonga as the world No. 212 threatened to derail the Texan's grand slam aspirations.
US and British sources said Roddick had been caught on television calling Tsonga a "f---ing *****" after an exchange at the net on Monday.

However Australian Open referee Wayne McKewen said he had heard nothing about a Roddick outburst.

Experienced Portuguese umpire Carlos Ramos drew Roddick's wrath several times.

"I'll end the discussion as soon as you say something like half-intelligent," Roddick fumed at Ramos in the fourth set. He had earlier described Ramas a "glorified score-keeper".

Tsonga led 7-6 (20-18) and 5-2 before Roddick clawed his way to a four-set win.

Roddick, who faces another Frenchman, Marc Gicquel, today, was mauled by US and British websites.

They accused him of "intimidating stares and muttered insults"

who's Tsonga, what rank.
Hewitt loves grass, whoever Tsonga is his chances are slim on grass v Hewitt.

Yeah chances are Tsongas going away in straight sets tomorrow, now that Hewitts at just about 100% (somewhere close). It was good to hear about him doing well lately, hopefully he enters the top 80 or even top 50 soon.

Straights, hmm. That's a tough call to make. He has played an awful lot of tennis in the past week. He basically played in 2 tournaments at the same time. So if he does go away in straights it's probably because of fatigue. If he plays inspiring tennis tomorrow, Lleyton had better watch out. I'm still picking Tsonga for the upset. Allez Tsonga!!!

I wish I could watch, but the next pro tournament I have access to watching is Wimbledon.

He must be pretty tired by now, like you said with the two tournaments at the same time basically, and he's not quite at the elite top level so his fitness is in question. It should be an interesting match, but you have to give the edge to hewitt-he won this title a few times, as well as wimbledon, and lleyton is also in inspiring form. Since hamburg (with a little poor playing against nadal in RG) Lleyton has been playing better than he has in about a year and a half.

Nonetheless, it should make for a good entertaining match that's unavailible to viewers that don't have BBC2 or TTC.

Haha, yes it is. I wonder if they will show this on tv. I really want to see this match up. I would also like to see "The Beast" vs. Nadal. Wish I could see these matches somewhere. :(

Here's some video of the 2nd set tiebreak vs. Hewitt.

Maybe if someone finds a livestream of eurosport we can catch the next match.

Damn, Tsonga's on fire. He just whipped a 96mph winner out of nowhere. He really improved from his AO match vs. roddick, who knows what would've happened had this been a best of 5 match, but Tsonga is playing really well.

Allez Tsona! Unfortunately lleyton had to lose, but hopefully Tsonga can be the guy to beat roddick or nadal.

Good on him, now I know how he plays after seeing the final set tie break. He has a spring in his step and looked confident on the grass, and he played pretty well, served well, went for a few big shots and took his chances, can't ask for much more than that . Hewitt was hitting pretty well during rallys, but he hit a few errors in the breaker and his serve looked a bit feeble. Well deserved win. I like seeing players win in that style, even if it's against someone I was supporting.

Well, so much for that theory. Tsonga's going all the way baby. Look out Roddick. Vengence is upon you.

Tsonga should have had Roddick in that AO match. Tsonga's awesome. Hope the Wimbly draw is fair, so he doesn't have to face Safin until the final.

ALERT: Tennis Fan.

Tsonga takes the first set from Cilic, 6-4, but in a bit of trouble in the 2nd, 0-3.

One of the biggest questions about JW at the AO was about his fitness. We'll see how conditioned he is, depending on whether he loses or wins this match.
In any case, he has played quite a bit, so a little fatigue might be creeping in.
