Jodar - The Real Deal !!

Hopefully he goes to the distance here. The hype might just be worth about a young guy this time. Wonder how much this guy can translate his success further this year. It's utter draught in every surface for any challengers to the duopoly.

He's already given me something to get excited about this tournament! He's playing well and taken up some of the slack now that Alcaraz in out.
I like that he plays fearlessly and is will to take the initiative.

This run through Rome is proving he belongs and dare I say it he's ... The Real Deal !!

Next up Darderi and the Italian crowd! Go Rafa !

But very little chance vs Darderi, i think he will lose because:

-Darderi did beat Zverez (third best player in the world)
-Darderi is a clay specialist
-Darderi wiill have the crowd support.

Funny thing is, clay is the dominant surface in all of Europe. Here in Valencia, there are plenty of hard and omni courts (artificial grass). And yet, the Spanish are excellent on clay and Germans, who also play predominantly on clay, are traditionally better fast court players. I wonder if anyone has a theory to explain this
I think Germany has a relatively large number of grass courts, also cold weather so playing in a dome.

I thought clay courts are the most prevalent in Spain?

Jodar's serve needs major improvement. From the ad side he was mainly serving into Darderi's backhand (i.e., going out-wide) with his flat serve. He also appeared to be striking the ball behind his head, at least to my eye. Doesn't seem to possess the slice down the T on the ad side, which is surprising. The serve itself is plenty fast, but could be improved quite dramatically. Obviously, he's still super young and has plenty of time, but would love to see these improvements as we enter the grass and restart the hard court season.

@Kafel69 good observations! They for Jodar is to get high-level coaching so he can continue to improve technically and physically. He had a great run and represented himself wonderfully and was only a point or two away from making the semis.
Darderi is tough but he is riding the waves of emotional Italian crowd. Great job by him of feeding off that energy and by Jodar of competing!

I can't wait to see how Jodar responds to 5-setters in RG!! With no Carlos, Sinner is by far the favorite, but let's see if Jodar can cause trouble for him and everyone else! Can Jodar keep building on this years success ?

@Dilexson @Kafel69 @aldeayeah @TennisHound and @4UTRMoutet the RG draw is out and Jodar's first round Roland Garros match is set !!
His ATP ranking is now 29th and for RG he is seeded 27th!

Looking forward to his continued rise throughout the clay-court swing! Let the fun begin!

You’re been saying Jodar will lose every match since basically he was born, so you will be correct every now then.
@Incognito and @4UTRMoutet yep, even a broken clock is right twice a day !!
Jodar is learning everyday - everybody sees it - and he'll be a force to be reckoned with !!
Kovacevic had been playing at high level, but met someone also playing well in Jodar!

Welcome to the second round Rafa ! Duckworth awaits ! BTW Blockx is into round 2 as well.

Well an interesting day where Jodar is going deeper in RG than Sinner. Hope Sinner figures it out !
In the meantime, Jodar will face American Michelsen which should be entertaining between two young talents.
Likely taking place while the West Coast is asleep.

I think Jodar keeps his run alive, but after today we're reminded that nothing and no one is safe!!
For someone playing well, Quarter finals does not seem out of the question and from there anything could happen.

Zverev will be feeling the pressure of the favorite and who knows how he will handle it.
Everyone left has to dreaming of winning it all!! Novak thinks No. 25 is within reach but Fonseca will be there to remind him youth is being served. Who wins out brains or brawn ?

out of all people, it's freaking Michelsen (on clay, no less!) that takes Rafa to 5 sets lol
@Kafel69 in Michelsen's defense Rafa took Michelsen to 5. Jodar was struggling to get there, but then was calm enough to take advantage of Michelsen's physical issues.
I like what I saw from both of them in brutal heat. They both have grit and many things to improve upon.

Jodar in to the 4th round !! How far can he go?

PCB next. i doubt he will put up much of resistance, BUT he has been running pretty hot this clay swing. will Rafa have enough in the tank? dont' know. If he gets past PCB, it's most likely Zverev next (tho Halys has been on a tear this RG also and could take him out, but unlikely). I don't see him surviving Zedrot, unfortunately, BUT anything is possible this 2026 RG lol

Jodar into the fourth round against fellow Spainiard Pablo Carreno "Busta A Move" !! I haven't seen him play lately but he has played some great tennis over the years. Jodar now faces a similar task as Fonseca passed, beating a crafty veteran, clay court specialist. He needs to be able to win matches like this to stake a claim.

I hope he keeps showing the grit and persistence that has gotten him here!!

Ball girls everywhere should beware !! Just joking- from what I've seen this is a big fat nothing!!

This tournament is completely up for grabs so whoever wins won't really surprise me. My hunch is NOT Zverev, not sure why but just a feeling.

Hoo-rray for Jodar! Quarter finalist in his first appearance in Paris !
RG is crazy now - everybody has a chance !!

Jodar vs. Zverev... what are the keys to victory?

@gamelovergold I agree FAA and Zverev can't take anything for granted. Fonseca is showing grit, skill and showing signs of growth, but I still feel like he makes too many bad decisions and eventually his forehand and willingness to take risks won't be enough to save him.

As for Jodar, I think the key for Rafa is to have a fast start - then he has a chance to let Zverev's mind assist him in the victory.
Zverev is playing well, and usually plays well at RG, but Jodar is not far off. If Rafa J. plays inspired tennis this could be interesting.
A win would definitely be a statement ! Jodar is growing match by match this year, but does he have enough gas in the tank?

Coblli is on fire too !! At this point, it won't be a surprise whoever wins, but a week ago - who would've thought any of these guys had a legitimate chance?

Go Rafa!

@4UTRMoutet I have to agree with you, but most people think that since his BH and FH don't explode that they are not weapons. Tien is an excellent and improving player, but I think that Jodar is on a faster track right now. His length let's him generate easier power not quite Sinner-esque, but impressive for such slight stature. I don't think Sinner was at Jodar's level at a similar stage of development.

The encouraging part is that Jodar has seemingly been building on his success. His mentality is also very Sinner like, hard working, dedicated not looking to become an entertainer just improve his craft.
Sinner and Alcaraz had a lot of help from a great teams. I hope that Jodar starts to add to his to accelerate his growth. Fitness, nutrition and coaching.

He has been building his game quickly since Indian Wells.

I see Jodar more like a Delpo mixed with Goran passion or impatience and even Michael Stich like

He should hire Stich for his serve and his stick like efficiency or Murray for better defence and first serve quality.

Sure Murray second serve was a problem but he improved his first delivery midway in his career and his patience
clarity and tenacity would match up well with Jodar to help in these missing parts of his game.

Jodar defense is far from Fonzis atm, he tends to go for broke when out of reach rather than reset the rally.

Oj went to court and we were able to see the evidence and the mishandling thereof which led to the not guilty verdict.

Sasha's victim chose money instead of going to court, so I can't say I have too much empathy.

you can spin it however you want to. we've seen his on-court outbursts, and can only imagine what he does behind close doors.

OJ was found liable for the wrongful deaths in the civil suit. In regards to Sasha, two things can be true. He's not a good guy and the victim took money rather than go to court. I don't necessarily fault the women for taking the money as they have the choice of taking a large sum of money that will help them going forward or go to court where he may or may not be found guilty.

It's very dangerous just to believe everyone who makes accusations. They should all be heard but not necessarily believed.

And another option is , he broke up , she got mad and decided to squeeze money. But we will never know , do we ?

Great tournament by Rafa Jodar !! Congrats!!
Definitely came up short vs. Zverev but no shame in that in his maiden season on the tour. He seems like he is growing every week on tour!

It will be fun to see where he stands on the grass and the hard court swing later in the year!!
