Rookie
My name is Austin Phillips, I am the assistant coach at John Brown University located in Siloam Springs Arkansas. Due to various issues, we have 2 or possibly 3 spots available in our starting lineup. I am looking for talented and committed MALE players with a lot of tournament experience. Players should be a high-level champ or lower super-champ, at minimum, to be considered. If you are interested in Playing college tennis, please email me at phillipsa@jbu.edu

I realize it is pretty late, but we really need to fill these spots.

Partial scholarship is available.

Check out the university at www.jbu.edu

Yes, I am a playing coach. I play the # 1 spot as well as helping run practice, helping with recruiting and running the men's team.
It's a paid position.

Top School.

Hmm no sex, no drinking, no dancing, no poker, no swearing, no smoking, no pr0n, no g@ys!

Isn't the above what college life is all about!!!!!

Thanks but i'll give it a miss this time.

We are looking for people of an NTRP level of between 4.0 and 5.5

The guys that graduated last year were close to a 4.0 or 4.5 level. They played # 3,4 and 5 for us, and those are the spots that need to be filled.

Thanks,
Austin

Okay, college is college...JBU is a Christian school...but the key word is school. People your age! No need to get into naming every sin and/or need you have, but I'll say this...you'd probably have fun at JBU because you'd make friends at JBU. The friends you make in college are incredible wherever you are. You are talking about being open-minded, but with a closed, negative mind. Great things happen at great places...and much of the enjoyment in life is from what YOU bring to every situation. A person that's negative won't find fun in many things.

Coach Carter, are we playing you guys this year? We were planning on making a trip through texas last season to play you as well as a few other schools, but somehow things didn't work out. I really enjoyed playing letourneau my freshman year. It was a good experience.

I'm sure we can work something out. I am working on things very lightly for the spring, since I have 1 and 1/2 more weeks of tennis boot camps. Six weeks was plenty again this year. The longer trips have been outlined...8 days in Destin for spring break...4 to 5 days in Memphis/St. Louis...I bet we can string something together.

Sounds just like "the place" where I want my kid to go to.

What are "champ" and "super-champ" terms used here? Just trying to get educated about all this.

It's part of the junior tournament system in Texas. Texas is their own section and state so it's their way of breaking up the lower ranked players from the higher ranked ones. You have to win at the champ level to play at the higher superchamp level. And so on. I'm not from there so others may have more insight, but I believe that's somewhat how it works.

Texas is actually a 3-tiered system. You start at ZAT (Zone Advancement tournament) you must accumulate 64 pts within 5 tournaments to move up to Champs and then 64 more points in 5 tournaments to advance to Super champs and then of course you start fighting for National Endorsements.
Top 60 in Texas will generally be a solid 4.5-5.0 player. Champs were 4.5 10 years ago when I first got into league tennis but now closer to 4.0.

Ah, if it only it were still like this. They changed it at the beginning of 2007 I think.

You have to accumulate 65 points now, in your best four results. All draw sizes for ZATs and Champs are of 32. winning the first round gives you 4 points, winning the second round gives you 8 points, winning the quarterfinals gives you 16 points, winning the semis gives you 32, and winning the whole thing gives you 65.

Setting the bar at 65 points makes it so you have to play in at least one final before you qualify for the higher division (A lot of kids were got to the semis four times and did not deserve to qualify).

Once you are in super champs each draw is of 64 and Major Zone tournaments are divided into A, B, and C draw. A being the best (most points awarded) and C being the lowest level. The A draw is treated like a Nat'l level 5 tourney.

So in conclusion, ZAT is a beginner. Champs are intermediate. Superchamp C draw is higher level intermediate, B draw is advanced, and A draw would be the cream of the crop.

That is partly true but it's not right to say that 'College is College', it most certainly isn't. In this case, potential students need to be fully aware of any prerequisites or expectations that come with JBU being a Christian college. Something like compulsory chapel might be problematic, as might other faith-based activities.
