‘Why throw me under the bus?’ - John McEnroe backs Rafael Nadal after being drawn into serving row at US Open

Nadal described the situation as a “joke” and, with tongue in cheek, said he would speak with McEnroe later. Appearing as part of Eurosport's US Open coverage, McEnroe addressed the row but said he had not spoken to Nadal.

“Why did they throw me under the bus? We haven't had that talk (with Nadal) but let me just add that… he didn’t let me finish, whoever the dumb journalist was,” McEnroe explained.
“Rafa Nadal is entitled to do whatever the hell he wants, that’s part of why you get as good as [Nadal is], you’ve got to deal with that.

“And it’s not up to him. We all know that he’s been doing this for the past 10 to 15 years. There's nothing new to that. It’s not his call - it’s the umpires.”

lol classic

Haha. Ya. TTW posters think he back tracked. He made his point and also added it's upto the umpires. So it's now well acknowledged here that Rafa has been doing this time wasting for over a decade.

Really don't get what the problem is.
The opponent can just take a couple of deep breaths, loosen up and go into their stance.
take that extra seconds and see if you can muster up 14 RGs/ 22 GS and counting
Agree, that reporter was not a great journalist. The moderator tried to help him, but Nadal wanted to slam dunk on him.

What he said was right. Rafito has se impressive Teflon armor that he cannot ever be criticized. The 11-15 seconds between first and second serves is something that’s not mentioned.

Of course he’s a great player and time wasting isn’t what makes him great, but he should be criticized.

JMcEnroe keeps lying!
An excerpt from Eurosport's article: ¤¤ Eurosport expert John McEnroe has defended himself after he was drawn into a row over whether Rafael Nadal ignores the 25-second serve clock rule and receives special treatment from umpires.

“And it’s not up to him. We all know that he’s been doing this for the past 10 to 15 years. There's nothing new to that. It’s not his call - it’s the umpires.” [said McEnroe] ¤¤ o_O

This is a big lie that Rafa has ignored the 25-second serve clock rule for the past 10 to 15 years. First, the ATP started to use the serve clock 4 years ago. Secondly, Rafa has not ignored the 25-second serve clock rule. The 25-second countdown (before every 1st serve) begins when the chair umpire triggers the serve clock; the server can't serve before the umpire has triggered the clock and he has to stay within the 25-second time limit he sees on the clock. Rafa has not exceeded the 25-second time limit without getting punished (a warning, losing the 1st serve, losing the point) by the chair umpire who operates the serve clock.

‘It’s a joke’: John McEnroe blasts Rafael Nadal for French Open time violations
Rafael Nadal has once again copped criticism for his shot clock issues, with the legendary John McEnroe ripping into the Spaniard.

American tennis legend John McEnroe has fumed at Rafael Nadal’s ongoing issues with the shot clock, taking aim at the Spanish star during his blockbuster French Open quarter-final against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.
Nadal and Djokovic faced off for a 59th time at Court Philippe-Chatrier on Wednesday morning AEST, with the 21-time grand slam champion claiming a thrilling 6-2 4-6 6-2 7-6 victory.

The marathon contest lasted more than four hours, stretching past 1am local time in Paris.

The 35-year-old is renowned for his sloppiness with the shot clock, regularly receiving time violations for ignoring the 25-second countdown while serving.

And McEnroe was not impressed that Nadal repeatedly avoided punishment during his highly-anticipated contest with Djokovic.

“He should be penalised,” McEnroe moaned on Eurosport commentary.

“If you are going to do it, do it, otherwise don’t bother. It is like humouring everyone.

“It’s a joke! He takes a look at the clock again … one. He’s edging it, isn’t he? Shouldn’t they have it at 15 seconds on the second serve? 10? Something?

“Or don’t bother. It’s like, you can take as much time as you want on the second serve. How long is this game? 12 minutes? Jeez.”

Nadal eventually received a time violation in the second set, but was seemingly unfazed by the chair umpire’s call.

McEnroe was trying to help Djokovic expecting Rafa to clean him up in the QF at RG 2022.

So you're not too sure about 5 years in the last 15 years? You need to be more precise otherwise you come across as if you are making it up. Why would you make it up? It's not as if you don't like Rafa, is it?

JMc created a big lie. Now it's well known who creates misinformation.

I've liked McEnroe since he first wandered into the booth as a guest at the old USA network. But the last couple of years he's been stretched too thin and his mouth has been on automatic pilot causing him to say some silly things.

I can't believe McEnroe was my favourite player back in the day. He is now just a silly old man.

It's funny that McEnroe says that he was thrown under the bus, yet hasn't he already done that to Nadal? He's basically done it a few times, i.e. encouraged an outrage on Nadal about time between points or between first and second serves. McEnroe was doing it to Nadal at the French Open as well.

they shoulda had martina and chris commentate on the serena matches that would have been cool.
i like mac but i think hes been at it too long. he says the same things over and over again
hes been commentating longer than hes been a player so after a while i think you just run out of things to say..
id even take wilander over him for now, just for some new flavor. im sure roddick would love to take his job,
but i dont think mac is stepping down anytime soon, its keeping him "relevant" lol

Corretja talks about how it's poor to say "X person said this" or "McEnroe said that" but in this case it's pretty evident that JMac really did say the things he did about the shot clock and Nadal's time usage between points.

It seems like he's trying to cover for both Rafa and JMac by saying this.

Alex has become quite the @SS kisser in his post player years, very unfortunate.

McEnroe's trying to weasel out of his comments by complaining about "being thrown under the bus".

Gimme a break, you clearly made those comments, at least stand behind them and address them.
