John McEnroe: "He's going to be the bad guy the rest of his career."

Interesting statement from John.

Yep, there is literally no upside here at all. 2020 has been a disaster for Djokovic. QuestionablE MTO in Australia v Thiem, Adria Tour, break away tour, saying a lineswoman he hit accidently was not hospitalized and its his career, frankly it is a mental implosion of the highest order that suggests he got too obsessed trying to be held in the same rarified esteem as Nadal and Federer. I posted on here after Struff match he was tetchy. So the signs were there he was mentally unravelling.

McEnroe is a disgrace for a long time now. So is CNN but this line from their article sounds prophetic:
The 18-time grand slam winner was disqualified from the US Open, a tournament he was favorite to win to close the gap on Rafael Nadal's total of 19 grand slam wins and Roger Federer's 20.

Of course he did. He didn't think it will hit anyone, but this is not the point. Losing control on court is something which happens to him too often. Until now he was lucky to get away with it, but not this time.
Spot on. I feel bad for Novak since I know it wasnt intentional but as a professional you have to keep your emotions in check.

Some of his outbursts (racquet smashes esp) have been downright psychotic. I thought a few times it was dangerous as a piece of the racquet could hit someone or himself.

Bummer for everyone. He was probably going to win this USO and make the slam race that much more interesting and this is gonna hurt. Plus he will never hear the end of this if he comes up short in slams.

I feel bad for that lady too, everyone calling her a Karen and such. It hurts like hell to get hit in the throat and I think her reaction was genuine. Everyone saying she did that for a lawsuit really irritates me.

Was just about to comment on this mistake. Second line of the article too. Embarrassing.

I think that's a good idea for Novak to improve his image. Mcenroe was known as bad guy but people liked him

The bad guy? It was stupid, childish, boorish even, but to hit a ball behind you and it hits someone doesn't make you a bad guy. It makes you stupid, childish, boorish even.

There's only a handful of truly "bad" guys in tennis and McEnroe leads the pack. Djokovic isn't even close and never will be.

McEnroe at a meaningless senior event. Notice the ball kid standing 5 feet from him:

John always jumps to the extreme then has to walk it back later, or just pretend it never happened...he's a click master
Or he just wanted to be in the foreground since he used to be a bad boy of tennis and trying to identify with Djokovic even though these two are 2 completely different persons.

I must have seen something different from John. It's even possible Novak thought she was a ball kid and was hitting the ball to her after he got broken, as players often do.

I'm not sure about bad guy forever, but long term, which moment will be more infamous, 40-15 or this?

If Nadal finishes slam king, you might have a tie. To date, Nadal's the biggest beneficiary of both.

Hey how are you???!!! Always appearing around the slams I see :D

I'm only really here because I noticed a thread asking if Lewis Hamilton is the GOAT and then noticed a massive furore and scandal was unfolding in the world of tennis, so came along for the ride. But yes it's Slams or bust (other than the occasional random visit).

Actually, I think it might have the opposite effect. A lot of casual tennis observers with limited knowledge of historical precedent with respect to defaulting players acknowledge it was an accident and believe Djokovic's penalty was too harsh and unjust. Those people might see Djokovic as a bit of a sympathetic figure and start pulling for him.

On the other hand, anybody who thinks this makes Djokovic a "bad guy" probably already thought he was a bad guy.
