John McEnroe: Nick could be the best player in the world in the next couple of years.

We could be looking at the future of tennis – if he manages to keep his head on straight. That’s a big if but it’s doable.

If I had to pick six or seven who could win Wimbledon, Nick would be one.

Kyrgios is not getting into to top 8 any time soon, let alone world number 1. Thiem on the other hand, he stands a good chance.

I think he will win a slam or two but I don't see him having the personality to hold the #1 ranking for a long time. That takes sustained effort and focus not just getting hot for a few weeks. Hope he does it though. Love his aggressive, creative game.

I wondered why JMac was not plugging in his new boss Raonic, but then see that it was before he started with Raonic.

"
McEnroe, speaking before taking the job with Raonic, said: “If I had to pick six or seven who could win Wimbledon, Nick would be one.”

Safe to assume that Raonic is now on the list too!

"

He can usurp but then says "If he manages to keep his head straight- and that is a big if?" So he is basically saying there is no way this guy can accomplish anything because he is a head case?

Huge potential game wise, huge failure between the ears. Sadly, what drives one's game is between the ears, which is why ultimately, Kyrgios will never achieve his full potential. He might cause an upset here and there and win, but that's pretty much it.

Mac's comments can be distilled into this:

"Could" = Absolutely.
"Will" = Unlikely.

Yes... that is a BIG "could". Kyrgios just doesn't have the heart or drive to become a #1. That requires maximum mental and physical effort throughout the year. Seems to have back issues as well.

McEnroe is my all time hero and I get quite defensive when his comments get put down , however he has lost the plot on this one. Kyrgios is a bit of a loony and I don't think he has the drive/where with all/what it takes to ever be a consistent number one .. Going further on this , I don't think he will actually ever get to Nr1 although I dont really watch enough tennis to compare to his age group/era because he'll be going for Nr1 when folk such as Novak and Fed are no longer in the picture. As one someone said earlier in the thread, maybe a slam or 2 tops. And I don't think it will be any time soon.

Of course he could. Million dollar talent; brain and work ethic haven't quite caught up.

Is JMac already looking for his next coaching gig? Maybe now that he's been up close with Milos and sees the limitations he's plotting his next move.

Nah.. He may get a huge win or two.. But hes too much of a head case to get to #1 . He this era's Goran Ivansevic really. Very talented but can't keep both oars in the water

Agree. He can win a few slams. But No.1? That takes consistency. Not his forte.

Ultron will not rest in peace until he breaks 237 & 302 and 6YEC/6YE#1 Records!! It will take 2 good years before Age and Mileage take its toll on the legendary Heavyweight Champion of the world, World No.1, Earths Mightiest warrior Ultron.

Oh I know.

You do realize that what is happening now is karma for the fans of Fed and Nadal, right? ;)

I'm not talking about you, but the fanbois have been pretty insufferable for a few years!

Ultronians are the most gone I've seen though. By gone, I mean completely taken and in love with their favorite. But yep, you're right. I meant that though, I totally expect him to break Fed's records.

Really?

I remember lots of really extreme posts about Fed while he was still winning almost everything, and around 2013 Nadal fans were pretty hard to take.

I also remember Chico - now I'm starting to think he was not so wrong - and then there was Angie with her daily rant about Novak "majoring in minors".

The hate back then was pretty over the top...

Hotheads like him have no place in tennis history. McEnroe may be famous-ish, but never regarded as a GOAT contender.

All the talent in the world means nothing without a work ethic. The guys who are number 1 have both. I just don't see Kyrgios developing the work ethic to be there... Hoping he'll prove me wrong.

I think he could. This Wimbledon will be really telling. Nick will go down earlier as usual or he may springboard from this into a great finish to the year.

You have a lot of hope in these lost boys lol.
Kyrgios just needs to meditate on Marseille and channel that serving from earlier this year. Like the name the Hunchback of Canberra because that Kyrgios posture means most of the time he's got some issues going on. He's due to get hot again. Kyrgios had great hard court stats in 2016. Its easy to have hope. I've made some good calls on Zverev on clay and grass as his hard court numbers rank him about 40. Its easy to have hope when the stats keep getting better and better and better for these players (no hope for Coric in my analysis who is truly lost.. and of course another is in freefall):

Two days to Thiem time.;) The Mayer match on Tuesday is the one to watch as its downhill sleding for Thiem the rest of the way to the SF. I'll be sick if Thiem lays another egg against Mayer. It should be rough as Mayer really was hitting well against the Thiem ball so it seems to be a matchup issue. Thiem will have to move a bit more crisply and get more pressure on Mayer or this is going to be a repeat. Mayer hit 18 aces in Halle QF. If that serve shows up, Thiem will be in big trouble if he's generous on his own serve.

Kyrgios is going to be a multi slam winner if he stays healthy. Like other's have said, his work ethic and mental strength need to catch up with his talent.

The best game among the next generation of players.

Yeah sure, if he saw a psychiatrist & started behaving like an adult instead of a petulant child then no doubt he has the most talent of anybody coming through & could take over in 5 or 6 years when he is seasoned.

But what about Raonic?... y'know.... the guy you coach?

Ahh this was taken before he became his coach.

Even given that it was said before he came aboard, I wouldn't be too pleased if I were Raonic-and, btw, since the prediction IS predicated on NK pulling his head out, I'd have to say, no shot.

Johnny Mac still calling shots?
Thoughts he would be still reeling from his predictionson about a certain American lefty.

I would be more inclined to believe it if Lendl said it. Somehow I have a great respect for Lendl's judgement. For Mac's pronouncements, whatever they are, I have an auto disbelief button.

Fed "fans" take the cake on that one. Rog is literally a living god to them who can do no wrong.

You've met Octo right?

I do think we will see a few Kyrgios Demolitions of Djokovic in a couples years. That will be cool. Do not think Nick is a long term 1. spotty.
