Joining 4.0 rec league after long hiatus

Due to a serious injury a few years ago, I haven't really played in about 3 years and I'm super rusty. I was playing 4.0 before I got injured. There's a rec league in my town starting in a few weeks and I'm wondering should I play 3.5 until I get my strokes back? I'm worried I might go out there and embarrass myself if I try to play 4.0. I'm guessing it will take months to a year to get my skills back.

IMO start back at 3.5 unless you have a few weeks to shake the rust off. You may be in a position of getting back into tennis shape (and the weird aches and pains that goes with it) as well as getting your strokes and timing back.

If I am wrong, then you have a season of being dominant and can play at 4.0 the next ....

Yeah I think that's probably the best idea. The optimistic side of me thought I might re-gain the skills quickly, but today I hit on a ball machine for the first time in years, and was spraying balls everywhere. It was pathetic, and made me realize I have a long way to go.

Been there too. I played a 3.5 last year to knock the rust off and played pretty confidently. Started back in 4.0 and still working back up.

To me, if you feel rusty 3.5 can help you build back your chops and confidence. But you can also just jump back to 4.0 and maybe struggle a season to build up as well.

Two weeks from now: "no way this guy was a 3.5!" thread.
LOL... yeah that's my other worry is that I will quickly out-grow the 3.5's. But I'd rather be in that position, than to struggle in the 4.0's and everyone think that I suck and shouldn't be there.

Right now, my biggest challenge is to just find someone to hit balls with. I lost touch with all my previous tennis buddies, plus no one wants to play with someone who sucks because it's a waste of their time. So my only option is to join this league cold, and hope I can find some people to play with outside of the scheduled matches.
