Jolly's Polys

Hey Jolly, I've been using Big Banger Original for 2 months now, and I'm liking it very much, but I would like to try Alu Power 1.25mm...do you think it's a good idea or I'll lack the great control that BBO offers?

Omw to the stringer with 2 weeks worth.

Since you break a lot of strings/racquets, I wonder how many restrings each racquet (your Wilson 90/HEAD) goes through before it's broken/tossed away? Do you throw the racquet away when they break or become unplayable, in other words, do they lose power/playability before they're dead/broken?

Yea, they get soft and start creaking and crunching but I only throw them out when they break.

I got a pack of Black Night and had it strung in one of my PSTGTs. I hit with it for the first time this morning. This is a nice string with good comfort, feel, good spin, control and medium power for a poly. I had a 2 hr team drill so I pretty much tried every shot. No issues with ground strokes, a consistent fairly forgiving response and touch is pretty decent on volleys. Nice serving as well, went after my first serve and it was certainly big. Second serve kickers also very nice. I enjoyed my first hit with this string.

Yes. The string does everything really well. Awesome string at a good price.

Tier 1 Black Knight Initial Impressions:

Even strung at a reasonable tension and left to marinade in my bag for a couple months it's still very dead and plasticy feeling. It's not harsh or jarring at all though, the ball just doesn't go anywhere. It's kind of like a ping pong paddle with a dead rubber.

I do a good job of hitting the ball in the same spot but the string bed felt quite even and controlled, no hot or cold spots.

It bites the ball quite well, not otherworldly like Luxilon but better than Solinco.

Off the ground it is very controlled and measured, you have to try to hit the ball long. I found myself putting some air under the ball to get it deep.

The meatball hero @alidisperanza said my T1BK ball came slower through the air but was kickier as opposed to the JR2.

Slices were very fun to hit.

Volleys I thought were great except you get no bounce off the string bed so if you block volleys back as opposed to getting your feet into them you might have issues.

I'll swat a few serves with it today.

In my experience shaped polys tend to suck after you knock the edges off, and I have hit this about 15 minutes which is usually when the clock strikes 12 and they turn into a pumpkin, so we will see.

I don't know what it retails for but barring any dramatic drop in performance this is a solid offering in the $11-12 range, a bargain below that and a pass if it's above $14.

Off the T1 site a reel is $129 packs are $9. On a reel it reasonably comes to sub $8 per set. They also have awesome sales from time to time.

Tier One Black Knight final impressions:

Wow. I'm prepared to dub this string the dollar for dollar, pound for pound best string on Earth.

It's the only shaped poly I have ever played that got better as it broke in.

Initially I thought I should have strung it a few lbs looser than normal but after half an hour it settled in nicely and I was getting some nice jump off the stringbed and a controlled, even response.

The deadness and excessive bite wore off and it just played very nicely for a good long time.

I hit with it for a bit over an hour and the mains were hardly notched and I thought this stuff might last forever but then I noticed that the crosses were looking might thin.

I can't for sure say how long it lasted before breaking because I only used it here and there but it certainly held up for a good long while. Better durability than 15g Hyper G I would say for sure.

If you are a baller on a budget this string is a must try.

That’s quite the praise there! Would you say it’s the best poly you’ve used during its lifespan?

Pacific Xcite:

Let me preface this by saying I've never tried a Pacific string I didn't like. I have also never played a Pacific string that lasted.

This string continues the trend.

It plays great, feels nice and soft, bites the ball nicely, plenty of pop, it's fantastic.

If you want the performance of a poly without the harshness it's a great string.

It's similar to Luxilon Element but without that je ne sais quoi.

It's starting to get chilly here and it was quite nice to have a soft stringbed to warm up with.

Volleys were great with nice feel for a poly.

The cons are that it's expensive and doesn't last long.

I don't think it would make the 1.5 hour mark if I used it for heavy drilling.

At $13 I would be singing its praises, but it's $18 so I'm going to have to say pass.

Great string, too rich for my blood.

Black Knight sounds like Black Magic except that it's shaped. Can you confirm this suspicion? Your review makes me want to order a set, but I'm a lowly 3.0 and I probably wouldn't benefit from it.

Sorry I have never played Black Magic.

@Muppet
I have played both & if you use poly, try a set.
I generally use poly mains/ 1.25mm sg @ 44 /48 lbs. Gets cut out in about 8 to 10 hours.

Goodness gracious, no! Black magic plays pretty lively and elastic and Black Night is fairly comfortable but much more control oriented with a crisper feel. Really enjoyed BK on my PSTGT, it gave me some nice control and could keep stepping on the gas

My go to setup is Cyber Flash 1.23/Kirsch SG 1.25 in the MW racquet in my signature. I think I'll try Black Knight some time in the near future. The reason I'm a 3.0 is because I have poor strategy and court sense. My strokes and footwork are very good, enabling me to use poly hybrids.
