Yea that's really sad that beyond the fact that he can't play anymore, he can't find a purpose for anything outside of tennis. Very heartbreaking and hard to read. You're right and I think counseling would be a good idea to be honest seeing as to how he's struggling mentally to deal with his pro tennis career being over.
 
Really feel for this guy, he's broke and in pain almost all the time. All he has is some great memories of a fantastic tennis career. Really hope he can find a way to use his tennis knowledge like coaching

I totally agree. Yeah that would be a good idea and any additional support he can hopefully will help turn his life around. It’s very sad to hear this.
 
Yeah I think any athlete struggles after serious injuries, not hard to think about offing yourself. I hope he finds peace but man it looks bleak if I'm being honest.
 
Sounds awful. Injury ridden frustrating career, depression because of retirement, now everyday activities causing physical pain, financial problems because of his father.
I wonder what kind of person his father was...
 
Big 3 should help him, give him some money to get going, and i should get a comission because i had the idea, i dont ask for much, just with 1 million dollars between the 3 i would be happy, im a man of simple taste (for their standars that is)

Just checked his ATP profile for his earnings, 25 million are only his career prize money, not sponsorships.
 
He got too big and heavy therefore more prone to injuries, I guess his physios and nutritionists are to blame for that.

what about wheelchair tennis?
 
He was one of the very few players to win a Slam and he beat the world #1 and 5 time defending champion to do it. He also won a Masters 1000 and a Davis Cup for his country. He won 22 singles titles altogether which places him 4th in the list of current title winners (now that Federer has just retired).

He has all those memories and achievements. Most tennis players would give a limb for achievements like that. He is far from having nothing. He just needs to remember it and focus on a future in tennis away from the court (however hard that seems to him now).

Horrible, terrible- any father would be mighty proud. I don’t get it though. Wouldn’t he have been the one to encourage his child to take up tennis?
 
I'm sure with time he'll resolve his knee issues at least to be able to walk comfortably, and maybe he'll find something to do that's just as fun as tennis. I know that without tennis in MY life I'm able to have fun. :P

I don't understand why so many of these super rich celebrities don't put their money in the bank with a high interest account, instead of doing risky investments everywhere as if they were city bankers. It's baffling to me. The interest alone would be big from putting the money in a high interest bank account.

Del Po was betrayed by his father, as per what we read above. It’s difficult not to be harmed by that if you didn’t see it coming.

But how did his father get his hands on his son's money? This question especially applies to the time after Juan Martin turns 18. His tennis money and sponsors' money should have been going straight into Juan Martin's own bank account.

Parents managing players wealth is commonplace in pro tennis.
There are many sad stories about this issue. I remember Arantxa Sánchez Vicario.

maybe inflation, a questionable story from investing standpoint, this is not an asset that has the potential for growth, but a paper that depreciates every year coz inflation slowly erodes that amount of money

Can’t really see Delpo doing any of those things though… maybe as an occasional commentator but he does not seem like a guy who likes to fill the air with the sound of his voice.

I guess that might not help, though. If his love is actually the competition of playing on court at the highest level, being close to tennis with coaching, commentating etc etc while not actually competing won’t help with the loss he is feeling.

Del Potro has so much goodwill banked with tennis fans. We literally all love him and are very much still wanting to celebrate him.

I wish there was another role in tennis that gave him the same connection with the fans that he had when He was playing.

From a selfish standpoint, I would love to see him commentating in either the Spanish language or English language major broadcasts. He would be brilliant in either role.

Exactly. Boo hoo.

He could commentate for one slam and make more in 2 weeks than many do in a year.

The guy has hundreds of options just needs to stop feeling sorry for himself for a few min.
