another titanic challenge for the rusty peak injured golden bull...
Lol that moonball backhand was AWESOME. Pushed his ass waaaay back
what is that...14 games in a row ???
Utter crap from Monaco. Not surprised but after the first 4 games, it looked like we might of gotten ourselves a match here.
Did this gem of a match really warrant several different threads?
All the pressure is on Nadal now to hold serve.
Truly awful match.
All I have to say is that Nadal was VERY fortunate that he avoided playing Raonic instead, who would have certainly given Nadal a much tougher match than Monaco did. :???:
good match, good for tennis.
16 games in a row.
So not only does Nadal like to pick his own butt, but he likes to pick other guys' butts, too?
8/10 break points that's solid right there
Almagro is playing very well and can make things interesting but he doesnt have the serve to trouble Nadal.
I know Rafa is playing well but Monaco should be thoroughly ashamed of his performance. A #13 seed losing in the 4th Rd of a GSLAM 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 is kinda pathetic.
I would like for Rafa to be tested so that he is ready to face ferrer/Murray/Gasquet in the SF and Novak/Fed in the finals.
Hope Almagro provides a much sterner test for Rafa in the QF.
Almagro hasn't won a match wich he had 3 match points, serve and one set up against nadal. Surely it won't be now.
Fortunate? Raonic couldn't even break Monaco's 110 mph first serve. What makes you think he would do any better against Nadal?
BP, my friend, don't be naive.
Gasgay is as weak as water, no chance in hell of Nadal needing even 60% of his skills to win that one. But I think Murray (or Ferrer) will be the semi-final opponent, so should be fun. Well, Ferrer is never fun.
nadal GOATing beating the clay court monster in monaco and giving him only 2 games !!
actually its exactly the other way round lol. i think theres nothing in his game besides the serve that can cause nadal any trouble
almagro has both serve and ground strokes to make it competitive vs nadal. Its all in the head ....
17 straight games for a 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 victory. A simply brilliant performance after a slowish start in the opening few games.
Hard to see Milos getting double bageled with that monster of a serve, even on clay against Nadal.
Really good effort from Nadal today - coming up against tough top seeds early in the slam draw as usual.
J. Monaco looked tired, hitting off the back foot and way too many unforced errors, ect.
And the 43-ranked Istomin in Round 2. Toughest Round 2 of any of the top 4.
here too i think its the exact opposite. in regard to future encounters raonic will be much better off not meeting nadal on clay at this point. same goes for every upcomer who might have the potential to trouble nadal with their game. their chances for all future matches will rise about 100 % if they play their first matches against nadal on HC and grass
6-2, 6-0, 6-0
Even though Nadal has beaten Almagro every time, I don't like their matches much because Almagro seems to bring out the worst in Nadal's game. If Nadal gets through that match looking as excellent as he is now (like he did in the 2008 quarter finals), he will be in a very strong position indeed.
Slam beast Monaco LOL! He had a similar loss to Fed in 2011 USO, he's just not a threat whatsoever to very best players in a slam.
Apparently after the match the interviewer told Rafa: 'I would't like to be your friend' and Rafa just looked at him stone faced.
I wonder if some small part of Nadal is annoyed he couldn't have won those remaining 2 games
I feel a bit sorry for Monaco, didn't Federer beat him in the US Open for the loss of only 3 games last year?* He's taking some beatings from these guys.
Not that it was ever really in doubt but #7 is looking more and more likely every day.
*Just seen Zagor's post above.
We haven't had a triple bagel at a major since the 1993 French Open, when Sergi Bruguera beat Thierry Champion in the second round. The wait goes on.
Was it as pathetic as a number 1 seed losing 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 in a GS final? At least Monaco gave it his all.
You raise an excellent point.
And what makes you think Nadal could break Raonic's serve?
Oh, and Raonic could play left-handed and still give Nadal a tougher match than the 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 match that Monaco did.
I can never forget Steffi Graf beating Natalia Zvereva 6-0 6-0 in the french open final in 30 odd minutes. That was possibly the most lopsided match I have ever seen not to mention a GSLAM final. I think Zvereva gave up singles and became a doubles specialist solely on the basis of that beating
Nadal on the way of beating Borg's record ( losing only 32 games in a GS win, Roland Garros 1978 ).
Nadal has lost 19 games in the first four matches combined.
In 2010 RG he lost only 41 games in the seven matches combined, losing 22 games in the first four matches.
This is obviously a very tough clay era, because as many say here, the level of competition goes up every year, even every month they would say.
No, it wasn't, since Federer won twice as many games as Monaco did.
He looked untouchable, it was great to see
in what match? certainly not this one, as he entered the court in his best dress and very convinced about his chances to become to become the next Xisca!
Borg lost 32 games in winning the 1978 French Open. I doubt it will be beaten, even by Nadal at the French Open. To beat it this year, Nadal would have to win his next 3 matches by dropping no more than 4 games per match on average.
Istomin is much much better than his ranking suggests. He would have won the USO doubles title last year if Golubev didn't start going mental in the middle of the draw. I've been playing with his tfights for a few years now, he's got good equipment.
Thanks for pointing this out, I did not know that.
So 3 matches left and Nadal can afford to lose 12 games to finish with 31 lost games. 4 games per match. I seriously doubt he can win the final 3 matches that easily. Last time he met Almagro was 2010 Roland Garros and the score was 7-6 7-6 6-4.
Btw Nadal also destroyed Hewitt before losing to Soderling. His game can only come down for the next match.
But seriously, from now on it will be a different story.
Almagro has the tools (impressive serve, great forehand, great backhand, great powerful shots). He's reached the QF stage twice here in Roland Garros (losing both times to Nadal, in 2008 6-1 6-1 6-1 and 2010 7-6 7-6 6-4 ). His main problems were movement and weak mentality against the top players.
His movement is clearly better now than years past, but we will see if his mind is stronger now as well or not. (In 2010 he played great against Nadal, but he lost all the few very important points in both tie-breakers).
And we all know Ferrer is a great warrior, top-5 player (surely on clay) and he will never surrender.
Nadal will probably defeat them, but I bet he will lose at least one set in each of those following matches.
Nobody will ever beat THAT Borg's record.
NSK comes out only at 2nd place in the poll. WHAT AN DISGRACE, WHAT AN OUTRAGE!
That is extremely unlikely. Nadal played very poorly last year and Federer only one 1 set. Djokovic didn't win a set in the Monte Carlo and Rome Finals. Murray didn't win a set in last year's RG semi-final. Almagro and Ferrer seem to choke leads at the end of sets vs Nadal.
Just a hideous effort by Monaco.....who racked up 2 more games than I would have.
Kind of like a 3.0 playing a 5.0.......
Which is pathetic...given Monaco's seeding
That's what she said.
Monaco has a very big problem against Nadal on clay. His game is "similar" to Nadal's but Nadal is WAY BETTER at it than Monaco.
In this situation, many games seem to be close ( 30-30, 40-30 ) but finally Nadal is the one who is winning most of them if not all (he won the last 17 games of the match, even though very few of them were 40-0 or 40-15 ).
A player that have a very big weapon (say Isner's or Raonic's serve, Del Potro's cannon forehand...) at least can win many more games even when not playing great.
But Monaco's game has that very big problem: he has not a single KILLER weapon, so when he plays a top-3 player he usually is toasted.
