Jurgen Melzer

I just noticed that he hasn't played since the US Open. Bearing in mind that he's now 34 and outside the top 100 in both singles and doubles, does anyone know what his future plans are?

(34 isn't even that old in singles these days and it's almost young in doubles. Still, perhaps he's bored of the tour and wants to do something else with his life?)

I think this will be the year Melzer, Stepanek, Haas will say good bye. Has Youzhny officially retired ? I am seeing him play challengers.

Even though Hasse played in the same tournaments as Edberg it wasn't that long ago he beat peak Djoko. He might still have a little bit more fight in him if his body holds up that is.

Youzhny is playing a challenger this week, so he has definitely not retired. He has, however, lost form drastically. Bearing in mind that he's two months younger than Ferrer and Ferrer is still #7, Youzhny's decline has been premature (at least to the extent that it has occurred). Youzhny's almost a year younger than Lopez and Lopez is almost as good as he ever has been.

As late as 2013, Youzhny had an outstanding year. Since then, not so much.

Also: agreed on Stepanek and Haas. But why Melzer? I can see him retiring from singles and continuing to play doubles for five more years or so.

That's always the big if with him, though! It seems to me as though the last big injury just took it all out of him.

Melzer underwent a shoulder surgery a few weeks ago. He won't be able to play any tennis until July/August, but has comeback plans for the tournament in Vienna in October 2016. I hope he will return once again, because he has the ability to play great tennis unfortunately he is very inconsistent and not exactly tough mentally.

Thanks for the update and agree completely. Great game - won 5 ATP singles titles. Just didn't have the mental side. Who knows what a 'super coach' (or just someone to get through to him) could have done for him?

Incidentally, does anyone know why Philipp Petzschner doesn't seem to play singles anymore? Does he just now play doubles?
