Just going on the record to say Medvedev was poorly treated by the Australian Open final crowd.

Just going on the record to say Medvedev was poorly treated by the Australian Open final crowd.

Little or no cheering for anything positive Daniil did. Cheering (or jeering) Daniil's errors or faults. General poor sportsmanship from the crowd and I fully understand and agree with Daniil's post match press conference statements.

Daniil, I am a fan. I support you. I appreciate watching you play and your heart for the game and your honest personality, rough edges and all. Tennis needs you. Fans need you. You are the future of tennis. You've earned it. Keep playing and you will see all the good you have worked hard for will come to you. I continue to be your fan and I wish you and your family all the best.
If you insult people and call them idiots, what sort of treatment do you expect?

Yeah, we are all truly embarrased after witnessing one of the greatest tennis matches every played in the history of the sport. It appears that Roger and Novak feel the same as they both commented on social media about what a great match it was.
I appreciate the players and Tiley for salvaging the tournament despite the efforts of Australian people, politicians, and fans to sabotage the tournament.

Of course the crowd is on Rafa's side in a match like this. What would Meddy expect? The same would have been against Tsitsipas if the greek would have been in the final. People in general root for Nadal/Federer more than anyone and the court was filled with Spanish supporters. I don't understand why Medvedev cries about not having support. Of course it hurts, but hey you're playing against a 20-time champion and one of the most loved players ever. It's nothing personal. Pay some respect to players who have made tennis so popular. Everyone has their free will to support anyone they want.

I personally like Medvedev's unique personality, but he should Wikipedia Rafael Nadal before the final so he wouldn't be surprised who will get the cheers in a final.

So?

You EARN crowd support. Danil hasn’t earned shiit, instead he dig a hole with his antics.

And Danil - while being a great player no doubt, perhaps Murray level even - is NOT the future of tennis. He’s been at his peak for nearly 2 years now and he’s still losing to mid-30s Djoker/Rafa.
Exactly. If you constantly tell the crowd you don't care about them, they will say right back at ya.

Not the same thing—that crowd was pro-Federer like every crowd, but they cheered onRafito as well and didn’t boo him between serves.

The comment I quoted stated cheering errors, shouting in between serves etc. This is exactly what happened in 2017.

Med also got cheered last night, and yes I was there also.

You're mentioning booing which I haven't agreed with but the other stuff happened to Rafa 5 years ago.

You shouldn't have to earn anything. A crowd is meant to be neutral. When the crowd boos a player as they walk on the court and cheer his faults from the first point, interrupt his serve etc, you know the crowd is a bunch of a-hole wankers and will never be fair.

I love that Med gave a big FU to the crowd by refusing to thank them, he was actually quite gracious, he should've called them out for the terrible behavior.

If he'd been from the US/UK he'd get a VERY different reaction for the exact same player. Its plain dumb nationalism and hatred of Russia fueled by the media and their stupidity.

What fantasyland do you live in? A crowd is meant to be neutral? According to who? Here we go with the Nationalism BS again. The guy acts like a jerk on court I don't care where he is from. You guys and your nationalism crap. You think about it more than 99 percent of tennis fans.

He beat Djoker at the USO tho.

But I agree. He likes to play the villain and is a dick sometimes and then complains when he gets treated that way. And the way he was talking to the chair ump was disrespectful too in my eyes.

As for the crowd, if you want to play The Skinny Villian. ( :giggle: Gilbert with the nicknames) it goes with the territory.

Tell me you’ve never been to a sporting event without telling me you’ve never been to a sporting event.

and before you respond with “bUt NoT aT tEnNiS”… have you watched any tennis? Ever seen a guy named Roger Federer play? Rafa Nadal? You know, the guys who put butts in seats? They put butts in seats because they have fans. And fans are not neutral. If Med is any good he’ll earn some fans. If he’s not he won’t. But losing to 35 y/o Rafa at Med’s best slam and Rafa’s worst… not looking good.

Cmon Spencer, get the AO moved to PRC or some place where the crowd will politely clap after all good shots and remain silent at all other times. Maybe bring in a dress code for spectators too.
No, just hold it somewhere where the crowd don't behave like drunks at the darts and where the government doesn't interfere with the draw.

Well, if that's what it takes to produce a Final of such high quality, then I say let the crowd behave like drunks ... and let the government interfere with the draw.

Mr. Gore, you sir have always conducted yourself as a gentleman and a scholar and I am not surprised you are shocked and dismayed at some of the crowd behavior. This is not how ladies and gentleman behave at a lawn tennis match. On behalf of all tennis fans, I apologize that you had to witness it.

I'm old enough to remember Medvedev saying, that when the crowd boos it gives him energy and he uses that fuel to keep winning. Thus if the crowd wanted him to lose they shouldn't boo.

Perhaps, the crowd was booing because, as he said, they wanted to give him energy to win.

First set, 2-2 Nadal serving, he goes down 0-30.
At 0-30 a Nadal UFE. Plenty of cheering and clapping, nowhere near as much as when Nadal wins a point, but plenty.
At 0-40 a Nadal UFE, a shank. Plenty of cheering and clapping, nowhere near as much as when Nadal wins a point, but plenty. People in the crowd waving Russian flag.

Med should have just accepted that 80% of the crowd wanted a Rafa win, and a few of that 80% are idiots, and got on with it. If he becomes a ten slam winner the same people will be cheering him.

The crowd at the Aussie Open was a bunch of a-holes this year. They seemed WAY more intoxicated and just mean-spirited. I don't recall watching a GS tournament (even US Open night sessions) where there has been so many folks yelling out on the service toss and making out calls in the middle of points. I saw some of this at some other tournaments last year. Some of the commentators even mentioned that there were more fans than usual during some of the lead up matches that may have had "indulged" a little too much on chilled beverages. I'm not sure, but I think it may have been related to having more "event" fans attending than "tennis" fans attending. I definitely have seen this at the Cincy tournament in the past few years-- as ticket prices have risen, there are fewer tennis fans there and a lot of folks who just want to be at an event, and a lot of them are highly intoxicated and obnoxious. Hopefully, this isn't a harbinger of things to come for 2022.

I think he shouldn't be allowed to talk to umpires like this without receiving a warning/point penalty.

It was really unpleasant to watch him unleash his temper tantrum and the umpire just having to take it.

Sadly, apart from Wimbledon, I think we are going to see more and more of this over time.

Staging Tennis Tournaments is more about business than sport these days. The Tournament organisers are focused on making as big a profit as they can on ticket sales. At the AO, this often means focusing on the Corporate dollars so a lot of seats get sold as "Package" deals. Many of these seats end up being populated by people who attend more for the food and beverages rather than because they are genuine tennis fans. And of course, the Event Sponsors also have to be catered for. Their sponsorship money is repaid with a generous number of tickets especially to QF, SF and Finals. Again, many of the people who end up sitting in those seats are well "lubricated" and have little geniune interest in the sport of tennis itself.

The Tournament Officials (ie Umpires) are somewhat hamstrung in what penalties they can dish out to players. And they can only do so much to control crowds. It should not be up to Court Officials to demand that spectators behave otherwise Security will escort unruly spectators out of the stadiums. That should be the job of the Tournament organisers themselves.

Rafa never has whined about crowd favoring other player

Crowd in 2009 was never rude to Nadal. They never booed him when he entered the Court.

Even a 33 year old matured Nadal slammed the pro Novak crowd in ATP Cup few years ago in the Final. He gave them a sarcastic thumbs up after getting broken for 5-2 in the first set.

Medvedev let the crowd know it was 'low IQ', screamed at an umpire, told the umpire he was stupid and used a euphemism to call him a pus-y and also told another player he was incredibly lucky and boring just at this tournament alone. He took delight in needling the crowd by saying he looked to Novak for inspiration quite deliberately.

As I mentioned when he did these things, he was only going to lose fans for this and it would be on him 110%.

And that's exactly what has happened. I used to like the guy to some extent even though his conflicted nature was clear from the beginning. I gave him the benefit of the doubt several times. But let's be honest; his accusation that a black umpire and black player were colluding 'because black', yawning in another player's face, poor treatment of ball kids and general sh-t stirring...these things all add up.

Now, Medvedev would rather live in a fantasy Cold War drama in his own head than own up to his own actions. I think this latest sob story is absolutely pathetic. Some of the weakest nonsense I've ever heard especially coming from him.
Not all of them but the crowd was really low IQ with their siuuing or whatever that means.

This is not a Football stadium to do nonsense stuff.

It's also not a place for Medvedev to call a crowd 'low IQ', scream at an umpire, call him stupid and use a euphemism to call him a pus-y and loudly tell another player repeatedly he was incredibly lucky and boring to get into his head during a match.

Medvedev invited the crowd's animus and brought it on himself.

And some of his previous 'greatest hits' include a claim that a black umpire and black player were colluding 'because black', mockingly yawning in Sinner's face while walking by on a changeover and glaringly poor treatment of ball kids while violently snatching towels away among other things.

The guy has problems

Here's my two cents; the poor Aussie crowd treatment that Meddy received in Melbourne has two links. One is that the Russian has given the specators reasons to dislike him, another that those in the audience appeared to have been ill educated. Danill has been erratic with the crowds that've been exposed to their misleading media and politicians. This is a chain reaction.

Well your ignorance and biased view also prompts me to add you to my ignore list.

Its Natural to be frustrated when crowd behaves like that and even Nadal got irked by it in the ATP Cup Finals.

And i never generalised the whole crowd but a small portion of them were disrespectful.

I'll be honest. As much as I liked how the crowd was behind Rafa, I felt the hurt for Med. And it definitely was sad hearing him explain how the little boy in him died at the press conference. I like his feisty personality, and he has one of my fav celebrations when he did the weird thing with his hands. Tennis needs some personality and a little hostility from the crowd but not if it's gonna kill the fun for one of the players. I like to pretend that people talking smack to me doesn't upset me to their faces, but sometimes I'll wanna cry in the shower. OK I feel like I've shared too much, good thing no one is reading this as I've rambled on.

These guys are earning tens of millions of dollars simply by hitting a little felt ball back and forth across a net.

Seriously, if they can't handle a bunch of strangers expressing their opinion in a public forum ... especially when many players have spent decades training and developing their games often on a very long arduous and lonely journey to get to the top ... then perhaps they should hang up their racquets and look for something else to do.
