Hmmm, well the grass may not be like clay, but it's certainly slower, even the staunchest ********* can't deny that.

well its very obvious that they slowed it down. But it didnt happen recently, it either happened in 01 or 02 and it hasnt changed since 02.

I agree but assuming Nadal can make it past SoderKing. On a good day, SoderKing can take anyone out as he showed in the past 2 FOs.

If SoderKing takes Nadal out, I hope he can go ahead and win the title.

Exactly, people are acting like it gets slower every year. Funny I didn't hear it much last year though.

yeah the "conspiracy theory" of wimbledon slowing down every year or being specifically slowed down in 08, then sped up again in 09, and then slowed down again in 2010 are just hillarious.

who ever said it was sped up in '09? :-? Because Roddick made the final? Roddick's always been successful on slow hard courts and that's basically what Wimbledon is these days.

You have to laugh at the *******s crying over the speed of the grass. Newsflash guys: If Federer had played on the fastest grass of the '90s Roddick would have been eating him for breakfast at Wimbledon.

Slower grass has been key to Federer's success here, so criticising it is ridiculous.

Perused the draw, and they will meet in the QF's! That will help Soderling big time mentally.

i'm pretty sure roddick beat nadal earlier this year on slower conditions in miami. so he's gotta have a decent chance this year if they play in the final. he'll prlly be relieved that he's not having to play fed for once. plus last time he won a major it was against the a spanish french open champion who was #1 at the time :)

Nadal had a toothache and punched himself so he wasn't 100%. Else he would have won.

Cool, that could help because SoderKing won't be unnerved like in a final.

Truth be told though, Nadal will likely spank Soderling in straight sets again, but there's nothing wrong in hoping! SoderKing all the way! :)

Nadal definately is the favorite anytime anywhere. But since it will b the QF's Sodapopinski has a punchers chance. Just has 2 b on that day and painting the lines.

ROFL, awesome name!

By the way, sorry to sound like a broken record but no takers for 'pop' from the Nadal or Federer camp. Seems like poppers biggest fault was to beat both the World's top 2 in successive years at the FO. No fans for SoderKing besides you & I :(

Wrong. The only reason Nadal won in straights at the French is Soderling had a terrible draw and was totally spent by the final. Also Nadal had a cakewalk draw and was totally fresh.

Soderling will beat Nadal in the Semis if they make it.

Bet on it.

nonsense. Nadal beat Soderling because he is too good for soderling on clay, simple as that.

Whats up with that, anyway? He is like 4gotten now?
I still think he can give Fed and Nad trouble and even beat them still if he meets them in the QF's or b4. Just not sold on him after the QF's. He mentally and maybe physically loses a step. 2 much pressure? Also notice his body gives way a bit and gets soft a bit after the QF's. Even the 3 set events he has problems in the finals.

I think Fed is going to win the US Open this year. Sadly, things are not looking good for him right now and I don't really see anyone giving Nadal any trouble on his way to the Wimbledon trophy. No deep insight needed to see this. If Federer wins this Wimbledon I think it would be the one that would make me happiest out of all his Wimbledons because I honeslty don't see how he could beat Nadal at Wimbledon this year. Even if he serves well and isn't shanking backhands I think Nadal is just playing at a higher level than Fed is right now. Come the US Open my hope is that Fed will have taken the tournaments leading up to it very seriously and will have enough time to elevate his game to where it needs to be to win it. Right now Fed is paying the price for coasting through a good chunk of the season. I'm hoping things will have changed by the US Open for Fed. As for Nadal, Wimbledon really is his for the taking this year. I do believe however that the US Open hard courts will not be very kind to Nadal's knees. It's not that I wish ill to Nadal, it's just how it's been I don't see that changing. I think Fed can with in reason win 2 more US opens and one more Australian open. I really don't want get any sort of hope up for Wimbledon and be disappointed but if Fed does turn it around gets the victory I think it would be the sweetest of all his slam wins and hopefully against Nadal.

Centre court was bouncing way higher than the other courts imo

That's what I was thinking. Anyone slicing the ball is just asking for trouble. It just sits up asking for it to be hit. It doesn't seem to Skid through like the outside courts or like Queens.

I expect Nadal is favourite now.

Yeh, but nobody is actually knifing any slices. So far for example Federer's slice has just been a slow safe shot and he hasn't even started to knife the ball yet. As we know, there are very few players on tour right now who have excellent slices.

Nadal didn't have as easy a draw as people think. Excluding both Nadal's and Soderling's first round matches, Nadal had a TOUGHER draw than Soderling. Nadal's avg. opponent world ranking was 23, while Soderling's was 25. 7th grade math people: an outlier will skew an average.

If that scenario plays out, I'd rather SoderKing didn't get that far. Simply because if he loses yet another grand slam final, he'll likely never recover.

If Sod manages to knock out Nadal I think Fed's chances of winning Wimbledon go through the roof.

Agree.

Fed needs to chill out on the slice return of serve too. It's getting him into trouble. If he doesn't have time to setup a backhand drive he needs to at the very least get a solid, firm block back deep. Some of the second serves Falla was hitting did not seem like they were good enough to warrant such weak replies. I think fed could have driven many of those balls back. If Fed was knifing his slice and it was cutting then by all means use it but for now I think he needs to keep that shot in the bag.

The reason Nadal won Wimbledon in 08, and why he would have won in 07 if he didn't injure his knee in the final while he was dominating, is because he treats grass courts like grass courts, and plays very offensively. He has been the aggressor when playing v Fed, and Fed has been more reactive.

You have to be aggressive and go after your shots on grass, like Fella was doing, not treat grass like a clay court and just play defensive grinding tennis like Fed was doing v Fella. Fed needs to be more aggressive, go after the return more, and impose himself at the net more. The Fed slice was hopeless and had nothing on it v Fella, he needs to knife his slice and be offensive with it like Sampras always was. Grass is still grass and it needs to be treated as such.

You can't let this go can you? I'm not denying a helathy Nadal would have won but he wasn't and he didn't. Being able to play is part of the game. Could this not be brought up every so often? Part of Feds greatness is being ready to play when others are not and not choking while others do. It's all about winning however you can.

The point is Fed needs to change his style, and needs to play grass court tennis. Since 07 he hasn't been playing offensively enough on the grass, and also he has all but forgotten about the net.

I do agree with you, but don't you think that Federer, of all active people, knows how to play grass court tennis? He is probably doing this to compensate for loss of speed, and maybe loss of focus (the baby?). So, he probably knows what he has to do but is unable to compete with the likes of younger, more agile players anymore- however when he wins the wimbledon this year I will gladly suck it up and admit I'm an idiot who doubted the GOAT. :D By the way I'm more of a Nadal fan than a Fed fan anyway.
I especially agree that he's not coming to net enough and is not picking the right time to run around the backhand. He also needs to lay off the slice a little unless he can figure out how to bite it again. This is a heavily debated topic anyways.

I was impressed by Nadal's game today. The only thing in his game that was off somewhat, like during many matches at the French Open, was his serve. And at Wimbledon, the serve is more important than it was at Roland Garros. Nadal's groundstrokes were very good and he was dictating well.

He can certainly win the tournament, but it will be interesting to see how the draw opens up, as Soderling looked very impressive also.

Nadal played differently to how he did on clay. He stood almost on the baseline to receive serve today, whereas on clay, he stands way behind the baseline. Nadal was also more offensive and pulling the trigger on his shots quicker in the rallies than he did on clay. Patience will help you more on clay, but when it comes to grass it is best to go for your shots more.

And although the differences between the surfaces have narrowed compared to how it was in the past with grass getting slower and clay getting faster, that doesn't mean that there still aren't considerable differences between the surfaces. All this "green clay" stuff that some people come out with is OTT nonsense. If it's sunny, as it was today, then the ball will always bounce higher on grass.

Actually, it makes me wonder if it is part of some damage prevention strategy due to some sort of physical impediment...

bang bang meaning serve and forehand,,,,point is over. like the Isner vs Mahut match today...... some consider that boring tennis,,,,if it wasn't for the drama due to the score..
