Kelly Evernden

The Green Mile

Bionic Poster
Anyone know where I can find some footage of his matches? There are only a couple short clips on YouTube of him hitting. He's played a fair number of big names throughout his Career (Becker, McEnroe, Connors, Edberg, etc) and I would like to see some of his matches if it's possible. I heard his best match ever in his opinion was his demolition of Chang at 1989 San Francisco. Anyone watch this match?

Also, any accounts of watching him live would be cool. Thanks.

I saw Kelly play an exhibition match in 1987. It was against Pat Cash a few months after Cash won Wimbledon. Kelly won. For a relatively small guy he could hit with explosive power. Incredible also to think that he had only 1 lung playing competitive tennis.

A watched his little run into the AO QFs. Caught my attention when he dismissed Johan Kriek. Lost to Wally Masur eventually. He generally always showed good sportsmanship which I really liked. Playing with just the one lung is inspiring no doubt also.

Always cheered for him. I remember the year Boris won Wimbledon for the first time and he was the big name going into the US Open. I'm pretty sure it was here he drew Evernden in an early round, and in an interview, Evernden said something along the lines of "He's just a tennis player like the rest of us. I'm going to play my game.." and then proceeded to put Becker on the back foot for most of the match.

He was a big hitter for sure.

I saw Kelly beat John McEnroe over at the Indianapolis Pro Hard courts one year. The kid was on fire and Mac kept looking at him like, "how the hell did he do that and where did that come from?". But as expected, he came back down to earth in the next round and out he went.
