Keys to switching to a heavier racket

    I just switch to a heavier racket 12.3 oz from a lighter racket and I seem to have a little trouble adjusting. Are there any keys to getting use to the extra weight?

    Harder hit balls close to the baseline that I used to half volley are a problem and I seem to be later than normal on my point of contact. Also, my kick serve seems to have lost it's kick about half the time.

    I'd suggest taking your strings up a couple of lbs or switching up 1 ga of string for two reasons.

    1. Heavier racquets have more momentum and cause the ball to sink into the strings more.

    2. Having tighter strings will cause your brain to want to swing harder, and you might get to those volleys and ½ volleys sooner.

    Yeah, I agree. Lighter racquets allow you to get away with late prep, but a heavier one will not. Practice getting your hips and shoulders turned the moment you see which side the ball is coming to. You should be turned before the ball crosses to your side of the net.

    Also, lighter sticks tend to let you get away with some wristy, flicky kind of strokes (like your half-volley probably was). Concentrate on thinking about swinging less with your arm, and more with your body, and you'll be on your way...

    Just keep playing & go to the practice wall& hit for 90 imn. a day you will really appreciate the weight .
