Kick-off weekend regionals

I was at the Georgia match today and was pleased, in general.

Spencer struggled a lot considering his opponent wasn't anything special. He just gave him very little pace and got to everything. Wil was down 3-5 in the first set before he came back, and was just out of sorts all match. I think he was just less tired at the end and got the super tiebreak victory.

Doumbia looked VERY impressive. Won 8 straight games to start the match, and while he couldn't keep up his near perfect level the whole two sets, he still finished strong. He has so much variety and shot making ability. It's a pleasure to watch.

The rest of the singles matches Georgia just overpowered TCU. 3-6 in the lineup are all big time baseline bashers and they just had too much firepower for TCU's players.

Doubles is always hard to gauge. I think lesser teams can be more competitive with the better teams in doubles, but UGA didn't exactly blow anyone away today. There were some solid victories, but I'm thinking they'll need to step it up to capture the doubles point against better teams.

Looks like Marchese has been out hurt (or sick) and is not in form. Hemmeler is resting in singles against Washington, and Marchese is not looking too sharp.

yeah, i wasn't around to follow the blog this weekend, so i hope hemmeler didn't get hurt or something - seems odd that he didn't play singles

good showing finally for tahir, not that i know anything about washington's depth players - hopefully that'll give him some confidence heading into a few more important dual matches before Indoors (though I'd still rather see a hemmeler and marchese 5-6, despite the Washington match)

12 of the 16 spots secured

IN: Pending - with my prediction
Kentucky Georgia/Va Tech - UGA 4-0

Stanford Ole Miss/Tennessee - Ole Miss 4-0
USC Auburn/UNC - UNC 4 -3

Pepperdine
Texas
Baylor
Texas A&M
Ohio State
Duke

Should be some good matchups in a few weeks. SEC should have 4 in with the possibility of a 5th. Pac 12 will get 4 in.

Topdawg, this sure looks like it will be one of the best events that college tennis will showcase the entire season. I always felt like ESPN or tennis channel should cover this event. There are electrifying energy every day and is fun to watch. but as usual, no TV coverage. and i don't think there is any web stream coverage either. It's a shame.

After football and basketball, NCAA lacrosse draws more people to its championship than any other sport. I guarantee there will be more people in the stands for the 2012 NCAA D1 Lacrosse final than will be in the stands for any of the Grand Slam finals in tennis.

While I love tennis and think it's the greatest sport, team tennis is a tough sport to watch as a spectator. You are watching one match and wondering what's going on in the other matches at the same time. The level of tension and excitement of a match that is tied three all and everybody gathered around the deciding match is pretty high but that doesn't always happen of course. And the reliability of college scoreboard and scorekeepers doesn't do anyone any favors either. But that's college tennis.

While Georgia looked great in the doubles to start things off against Va Tech, singles is not off to a great start.

Sadio Doumbia, who is definitely making a case to be a top player (and maybe even the best player on the team), steam rolled again today, 2 and 1.

Spencer and Toboada dropped first sets at 1 and 4 respectively, and Singh squeaked out his first in a tiebreak. Leading in the second at 3 and 4, but still down a break at number 1...

They don't even compare in terms of visibility. Lacrosse gets far more tv coverage than the sport deserves.

I agree that the reason college tennis does not get more screen time because of the 6 different matches going on. You have to have someone who really understands where the important stuff is going down to run the show for it to be succesful.

And tides turned quick there. Spee and Nacho (1 and 4) send it to 3 sets. Probably going to be a little closer match than UGA expected, but looking like a win...

Auburn has been improving. We barely beat them at auburn last year. But who thought that of North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Illinois and Auburn, that Auburn would be the team going to the ITA Indoors?

Tennessee is up 2-1 and the other three matches are very close. They just might pull it off.

Tenn and Ole Miss tied 3-3. Tennessee's Reese leads Ole Miss' Lutjen 4-1 in the third.

The Tennessee win confuses the issue in the SEC quite a bit. I was starting to rate Mississippi highly after the SEC indoors, when they had some surprise performances by new players. I had them rated in the 8-10 range nationally. Maybe that is too much to expect, too soon, from a team that was well out of the top 10 last year.

But, I also had Oklahoma in the top 10, and Ole Miss beat Oklahoma. I guess we need some more data to rate these teams accurately.
