What's the school of thought on racquets for the 8-12 year olds learning tennis. On one hand you could buy junior size racquets which are cheaper and presumably not well made or buy light full size racquets with small grips (1/8). I have junior racquets for my kids but wonder.

Any thoughts on this. Remember, talking beginners that are athletic.

I'll do a little digging on this one, but I'm pretty sure the rule of thumb is to use an abbreviated frame until the little nippers get up to around 12 years old, unless you have an overachieving junior on your hands that is ready for a full length racquet a year or two earlier.

I bought a pair of junior Wilson Surges (the smallest "real" junior racquet which I think was 25". ) Fine for the 8 year old, but for my 6 year old, I took off the end cap and sliced 2" off, so she ended up with a 23" real racquet. It made a huge difference in getting the ball over the net.
