Knee Pain

I got some pain in my left knee after a day of 5 hours of tennis and some soccer. Its a pain in the front of my knee, below the knee cap. Kind of where the patellar tendon is, but it feels deeper. Im walking a little gingerly and bending the knee and putting lots of pressure on it hurts. What do you think it could be?

Does it hurt all the time or mostly when you put weight on it (bend it)?

Sounds like it could be the patellar tendon. I had sore knees last summer. Wore knee braces which helped, but obviously didn't cure it. Now I almost always use foam rollers on my quads, hamstrings, and IT band (outside muscle of leg) before I play and the knee pain is almost non existent.

Ice it immediately. Does that help ? (Use an icepack, or ice wrapped in a towel, or in a ziplock bag).
Avoid putting pressure on it for a couple days.

Just take it easy for a few days. I wouldn't start panicking yet. 5 hrs is a lot. People have run marathons and survived. Mostly.

Rest a few days, then try some leg exercises with weights. Building strong legs will decrease the chance of knee pain. Good luck.

Yes, I've had soreness in my patellar tendon before, but this is worse. Its hurts mostly when I put weight on it or bend it, not just when I'm sitting or whatever.

How is your knee? What are you doing to alleviate the soreness?

I had a tough match yesterday and after the game my left knee (the area in the inner part) was sore and swelled.

It is still sore today and I am not sure if it was caused by my landings during my serves.

Knee is much better. Got myself a new pair of shoes and started doing one legged squats. They really worked magic for me. If your knees are sore and swelling, I highly recommend taking some NSAID's.

Good to know your ok, I will look into my shoes or even replace the inserts. I have always had strong legs but maybe age has been creeping up on me.

And thanks for the advice on the nsaid's I am taking some actually

Thanks! The cushioning in the shoes just get worn down and all that so thats the problem. I thought I had strong legs too, but those one legged squats are really helping me FWIW. Best of luck!

As someone who's no stranger to knee issues do your joints feel particularly stiff or is it rather a shooting pain when moving/performing activities?

You could try a knee sleeve with a hole in it. If it relieves the pain somewhat, then you've like got Chondromalacia. It should go away with rest as your cartilage grows back. The knee sleeve is not a device to support playing tennis (though many use it that way) but it will help make life easier doing everyday things.

Might be a cumulative injury then.

You do a little damage every day and the body doesn't have enough time to repair the damage and it accumulates.

Unfortunately the cartilage doesn't grow back or it grows back very very slowly. There are blood vessels in bones but not cartilages.

The definitive symptom of chondromallacia is pain under the knee cap when walking down stairs.

Yes, it grows back very slowly.

I've had it many times, a few to the point of using crutches.

So a decent period of rest may make it significantly better. You'd then need to figure out how to do less damage in your tennis games.

I was an incidental knee sufferer for a long time, till I started strenghtening them. I do these knee bends, a sort of light semi squats. I do them daily, while brushing my teeth: 50 times left, 50 times right. I can't remenber the last time I had a knee pain.

Are one legged-squats a good idea for knee pain? I'd be very careful - one slip up on the technique could lead to a serious injury if your knee is already a bit dodgy.

Sorry for giving the wrong impression, I wouldn’t advise these exercises when you’re in pain, even if they are a far cry from squats: just light knee bends, standing on one leg.

Speaking for myself: I’ve found out that strenghtening exercises only work for me if I can incorporate them in my daily life. Draw circles in the air with your free leg and they’re great for balance too :)

I am on the hard court 4-6 hours 5 days a week. Had the inner side of the left knee very sore from what I thought was to extreme a knee bend in my game.
Tried a knee brace helped me to continue to play even with the pain, but something klick in my 69 year old brain. Ah ha left foot arch pronates, time for
insoles to correct pronation, pain went away. Just a thought, as most tennis shoes set you up on the balls of your feet, too much stress on inner side of
ankles, lower leg and knees.

Aloha

As an after thought, even with shoe warranties (I believe total wear through, then free replacement) is a total scam. That amount of wear starts putting
added strain on ankles, knees, and even feet. Once ball of shoe is smooth I replace shoes. 100$ for a pair of shoes is far cheaper then any leg
damage. If I find a pair of shoes I like I always order a 2nd pair and put on the shelf until original pair are too worn.

Also, I find the best exercise to strengthen stretched knee ligaments is leg extension, tightening up the quads tightens knee ligaments. Just go with light
5 pound weight to start with say 20-25 reps 1 set. Ice afterwards to pull blood into knee to facilitate healing and reduce swelling. The bodies natural
defense is swelling to restrict movement, therefore, ice reduces swelling relieves pain and pulls blood to the area to warm tissue, thus promoting
quicker recovery.

Also, the knee brace I have used for skiing, surfing, and tennis is made by Champion. It has hinged galvanize stays both side of knee to restrict
lateral movement made from spandex I believe which is much cooler than neoprene braces. I believe about 35$, a cheap effective protection until
you ARE STRONGER.
