Kobayashi Maru String Scenario

I went from a DR98 to a current generation Vcore98 and now to a Regna 98 v3.

Vcore 98 was full bed triax 49lbs which would lock and break say by hour 10 / 12 but access to stringing and string costs are cheaper locally so with buying a reel of Triax it's ok. I was starting to experiment with some Triax hybrids

With the Regna 98, I had to go softer so for the first time did a Vs Gut Hybrid.
First attempt VS Gut and Prince Synthetic OG
Second attempt VS Gut and Technifiber MultiFeel.
Attached a photo at 6-7 hours of the VS Gut and Multifeel. 53/51lbs

I might switch and try a full bed of yonex PTP Yellow.

Any suggestions on tension as I do need to watch string stiffness with the Regna 98 and my wrist?
I have been using either gut mains and Yonex Polytour Air ( 58# mains / 53# cross) or full gut. If you go too low with gut loses the playablity and feel of gut. You might as well use a multi. Gut for me lasts a very long time.

so at hour 7-8 of mixed singes and doubles hitting, the technifibre Multifeel as shown above snapped.

1) the last two setups have been Gut hybrids. a) was Gut VS touch 16 and Prince Syn Gut w/ duraflex 16g 52/50 and b) Gut VS touch 16 and Technifibre Multifeel 53/51

2) Got to find a cross that will last longer if stringing with Gut. Man I really lost felt the difference of spin production with a Gut main and something else cross.

3) Due to having to go to a different string shop, this time have a 2 day turn around time on stringing, but the asking price on Gut was ridonkolous!!! so the experiment continues with
VCORE98 and REGNA98 both being strung with Triax 17 mains again, but this time going back to a Synthetic Gut in the cross Forten Sweet 17; 52/50 for both frames.

I would use PLP over multifeel or any synthetic gut string. Forten plays terrible as a cross string in my experience. Locks up in about 15 minutes.

so circling back to

VCORE98 and REGNA98 both being strung with Triax 17 mains again, but this time going back to a Synthetic Gut in the cross Forten Sweet 17; 52/50 for both frames.

Have only played the Regna 98. At 10 hours, no breakage so this is better than before. But less ball pop and explosion coming off the string bed at this point. The Triax mains still slide which is great. The Forten Sweet 17 cross is definitely locked up. If I am just rallying and practicing I think I can get more hours off of this string combination, but I wouldn't want to play with it in a match.

I would say that I do like this hybrid of Triax mains and Forten Sweet cross better than using Prince Original Synthetic Gut/ Prince Synthetic Gut with Duraflex cross.

Cutting out the string and taking it to the stringer. Going to try the almost reference setup now.

Regna 98
Mains: Triax 17 @ 50 lbs
Cross: Cream 17 @ 48 lbs

You should try Isospeed Professional Classic as a cross for Gut. This is a sweet combo and if you do a search here on “Mojo setup” you will find some good reviews. Also RPM soft will work as a good cross as well as PLP.

an AI link comparing Prof Classic vs Cream

so it makes sense.

Gut with more power to pair with Prof Classic which has less power and then
Triax with Cream where the Cream hopefully gives a little more crispness and power.

on my next tennis warehouse order then I'll pick up a set of Prof Classic.

to follow up on your suggestion, I looked at some past posts. Any particular Gut version to pair with Prof Classic or just the standard VS Gut?

can see the slight color difference between Triax and Cream

cream adds power relative to what?

the AI says (I know I should be careful with that leading statement).

Isospeed Prof Class is Exceptionally soft and low-powered for a multifilament.

and I thought cream is mid powered
cream is mid-powered in the poly category, and prof classic is low-powered in the multi category. If cream were a multi, i do not think it could be considered a mid-powered multi. prof classic should tame the power of gut a little, but I would expect cream to do so to an even greater extent at the same tension.

ah. of course. different material.

thank you.

For me Cream crosses reduced the power of Triax.

I concur. I got less power with the Triax Cream combination.
Also it was a bit more stiff which my wrist didn't appreciate during the first hitting session. It was better on the second hitting session but still not great if I increase the number of hours of play.

so in order to finish up the 1/2 set of Cream I will drop the tension

Regna 98
Mains: Triax 17 @ 48 lbs
Cross: Cream 17 @ 45 lbs
