No, not Petr, you goof.

His son, Sebi!

Young Sebastian Korda is getting after it, boys. And this time, he's not taking "no" for an answer.

While the 18-year-old Yankee is officially the ATP World No. 520, he is the No. 2 in the ITF junior rankings. Plenty of room to grow. And time to do it. The pedigreed righty stands 6'4, and carries an enormous weight of expectation.

Sebi's idols growing up were his father and Radek Štěpánek. If he wasn't a tennis player, he would have liked to have been a hockey player or golfer. He was last seen in action at the Atlantic Tire Championships on the Challenger Tour where he took an L in the Round of 32 to some Belgian.

Following daddy’s footsteps.
Hopefully he’s more clean than his dad.
I wish these major titles at the junior level translated more regularly to massive success on the full-fledged Tour.

Feel like they really don't much of the time. Particularly in the cases of some recent American up-and-comers.

Definitely keep an eye on Korda, 520 ranking is lower than I'd like to see at his age.

So the ranking seems to have improved quite considerably in the last 2 years ;) Currently at #88, is young SebGoat on his way to become top 3 ranked US player in 2021? Consistency, winning mentality and some easy power of both wings. Is it Korda time, again??

Definitely the most promising American. No weird looking strokes. No outward signs of mental instability. Smooth and solid like a metaphor.

And maybe Fritz? I don't really follow US tennis much but this kid seemed legit, his groundies looked good. Not sure about how mentally tough he is, though..

Latest on my substack

Although most young players today have moved away from the modern forehand technique, Sebastian Korda is one of the exceptions who is quietly rising up the rankings. Currently sitting at a career-high 38, the American and son of Czech former grand slam winner, Petr Korda, comes from a rich sporting pedigree.1

Korda has already won an ATP title, on the outdoor clay of Parma last year prior to the French Open, and made a final of the ATP 250 in Delray Beach. He was perhaps unlucky not to be in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon last year as well, losing a five-set thriller against Karen Khachanov in the fourth round. The fifth set alone featured thirteen (13! on grass…) breaks of serve. This versatility across all three surfaces is rare in such a young player.
What I love about his game is the simplicity in all his strokes. At 6’5’’ there is an easy tap of power that is reminiscent of another Czech, Tomas Berdych. His 52-week serve statistics are promising, although not crazy considering his height. What makes me bullish on Korda overall is his return-of-serve ability; he currently sits at 28 in the 52-week ATP return rating, and if we look at hard court matches only against top-10 players, he rises to 17th, just behind Daniil Medvedev and Emil Ruusuvori. Such a well-balanced game lends itself to really reap the rewards if Korda can take his fitness and athleticism to another level in a similar fashion to what Medvedev did in 2019. It should be expected that his serve improves into his twenties as he builds up more strength as well.
Korda takes on the unbeaten Rafael Nadal in the second round of Indian Wells today. The last time they met, a 19-year-old Korda only managed 4 games in three sets at the French Open. At home on the North-American hardcourts, it will be interesting to see how his game stacks up against the very best.

No matter what happens, he just has to keep fighting. If he's a real Rafa fan, he can prove it not by naming his cat after the great, but by showing some of that indomitable spirit.

Very tough loss for him in the Adelaide 1 Final 2023, but he handled the loss with so much grace and maturity. I like how he didn't get too upset and was so gracious in defeat after having championship point himself.
