Kyrgios dropped from Davis Cup team

I don't know why he was dropped, but after his dismal performance in the QF, I think Tomic is a better choice. He's also easy pickings for Murray.

Davis Cup is still being played?? I thought they stopped playing that back in 1920's.

Next thing you'll tell me is that tennis is an Olympic sport.

I don't think it is extreme. Nick has big issues. I love tennis and hate to see a pro disrepect the game. If he doesn't like tennis and likes basketball more, he should quit tennis and play basketball. Also, I know young guys think there sex lives are the most interesting thing in the world but I really don't care what he does in private. And, he should have a lot more respect for his friends and young ladies than to blab intimate secrets so little Nicky can get an advantage in his tennis matches especially since little Nicky doesn't even like tennis that much.

Goes without saying that Tennis Australia are obviously trying to send a message and enforce some level of punishment because other than Davis Cup they have have conceded that they have no control over professional players (other than to cut funding but that is largely irrelevant by time they are pro).
In many ways I would have preferred they bought him into the team but didn't play him as being in that team environment could prove to be a positive influence on him....we also saw what happened to Bernie when he was left to do his own things during our last DC Tie!

I thought Tomic wasn't going to be selected for the team until he settled his differences with Tennis Australia over the cutting of funds to his sister. Last I heard was that he had refused a meeting to discuss this with them. What's changed since?

I'm surprised this was even an issue.

In Groth, Kokk, and Hewitt they trust. At least you know they'll fight to the last point in every match.

Wise move. Kyrgios has stuffed up royally and needs space to get his head right. It looks like Wally Masur had a good sit down with Nick and his camp and it would have been a mutual decision that is in everyone's best interests long term.

Just saw in another Aussie sports story, Buddy Franklin is having some issues and not playing in a huge Aussie Rules football match.

Also why do they not have much chance? Who is even the British male #2? I could see them getting 2 wins over the British #2 guy and possibly win the doubles, even if Tomic cant pull off a big win over Murray.

The British number #2 is 'The Mighty James Ward' (there's a thread on him somewhere) who is something of a hero in British Davis Cup lore. He does bugger-all on the tour but is often transformed when playing DC for Britain. He famously beat Isner in the DC quarter-final last February and has won other singles rubbers before now. He cannot be discounted.

OK thanks. How does he compare to say Kokkinakis in your estimation. I know Kokkinakis has a lot of hype as an up and comer/future star but he isn't really established as any kind of threat on tour at this point.

Kokkinakis is ranked higher and is more consistent on tour. Ward is a headcase who woefully underperforms for his abilities but tends to come good for DC ties. They should make for an interesting match-up.

If anyone cared to read any of the articles they'd see that it was mutually agreed upon by both Tennis Australia and Kyrgios.

Based on kyrgios recent performance it's understandable. There was one too many players with Kyrgios, Kokkinakis, Hewitt, Groth, Tomic
Kyrgios nearly screwed up our DC chances by losing his match to the Kazakhs. He had his terrible on court antics and didn't do well at the US Open.
Kokkinakis also screwed up his DC match but hasn't had as bad as month as Kyrgios so they kept him on the team
Hewitt saved our bacon at DC and it's his final year
Groth also saved us from a home defeat and is a rising player. Reached the 2nd round of the US Open defeating Dolgo.
Tomic, number 1 Aussie player, shot up the rankings. 3R US Open and recently won a title.

They made the right decision. Not to mention that Murray has a h2h of 4-0 against Kyrgios with all matches being played in the past year. Murray leads Tomic 2-0 but they haven't met since 2013. Murray leads Hewitt 1-0 but that was in 2006. Groth and Kokkinakis haven't played Murray before. Again, it was the right decision.

Kyle Edmund is actually ranked higher now, and so is Bedene but of course he's not eligible to compete in this tie.

The Aussies no doubt are targeting a 3-2 result.
Murray will have to play all three matches and the plan will be to tire him out.
Kyrgios clearly was not up for it - who knows what you'd get if he played.

For the Aussies to have any chance, they have to beat Ward and win the doubles.

If they're tied 1-1 on the first day, Andy will play doubles too. That will make it hard for the Aussies.

But I'm sure that would be the plan. I don't think any of them can beat Murray in the singles.

You're right about Bedene but, as you say, he is not eligible to play, at least not at the moment. Didn't realise Edmund was now ranked higher than Ward but he is an unproven quantity in Davis Cup and I don't frankly recall him showing much form lately. Ward at least has a proven track record in DC.

Unfortunately James has lost his last 10 matches, the most recent to the world number 430. As you say, he has raised his game for Davis Cup a few times, but I do wonder whether it's time to go with Edmund as he will probably be the go to number 2 for the foreseeable future.
