Nick Kyrgios facing ban after calling ATP ‘pretty corrupt’ at the US Open

Nick Kyrgios has landed himself in more hot water after his first-round US Open win and could face a suspension from the ATP Tour. The Aussie accused the ATP – the governing body of men’s tennis – of being ‘pretty corrupt’ after he was slapped with a $113,000 fine following a major meltdown in Cincinnati, in which he clashed with umpire Fergus Murphy. Against world No. 9 Karen Khachanov at the Masters 1000 event, Kyrgios called Murphy ‘the worst f***ing referee ever’, saying he was ‘doing some stupid s**t every time I play’, while he left the court without authorisation in order to smash two racquets. On his way off the court, he spat in the direction of the umpire’s chair and called him a ‘f***ing tool’. Asked for his thoughts on the fine after his first-round US Open win against Steve Johnson, Kyrgios said: ‘The ATP is pretty corrupt anyway. I’m not fussed about it at all.’

i'm of two minds tbh, one the ATP is corrupt its no secret its messy as hell, and rife with conflict of interest. laundry list right here (also not to worry this conflict of interest thread includes from all different players)

He certainly shouldn't have said it obviously especially with him being i think under review from cincy. I feel like if ATP is going to ban him, it should probably be based on his cincy behavior.

Do not agree with ban. I like nick. That shorts groin tug thing he does is hilarious. Not sure what that is. Spastic flick the nuts thing. Lmao.

Kyrgios should be more specific and name the players who behave like him and get away with it. I think the general consensus is that not many players would get away with his bad behaviour and not be suspended from the tour for a significant part of the season. There was a time when he was suspended for 6 weeks over the Christmas break. What a joke!

It’s corrupt if he doesn’t get banned. Would show lack of integrity from ATP.

lol , they have that in spades as evident by the many of conflict of interests and issues they have within ATP.
In other words - you can abuse officials we put as chair umpires, but you can't abuse us.

i mean see that i cant believe in my life i am agreeing with you but if he is going to be suspended/banned it should be for that.

well it would depend on what one considers his most egregious behavior? fognini was fined just 3000 for wishing a bomb would explode on a stadium, while nick was fined I think nearly 18K for making "lewd" gesture, with a water bottle. Denis was fined 7000 for nearly taking an umpires eye out.

Huge support from Kermode ? If it's true, that could explain a lot.

You not agreeing with my thought most of the time should be something good. If you have any respect of yourself that is.

He fills stadiums and creates a buzz. They'll not ban him as long as he's the most talked about guy out there after the big 3. In fact, I think he gets more ink than Djokovic with 1/1000th the results.

Nick has hinted before that Djokovic gets away with smashing equipment on court i.e the Perrier bench at the FO.

Absolutely love the retreating statement he has made because he's finally realised he went too far but i have to also have to sarcastically love the fact it took them this long. Insulting umpires, being rude to the crowd, constantly swearing and tanking is fine and good to get attention for the sport but one casual reference to how the ATP is possibly corrupt and a swift ban action happens. Really does reveal where the priorities are in tennis.

i think he may have talked about once when he wasn't kind to a ball boy and the way it was received versus the time novak was a ****** to a ball boy if im not mistaken. i mean the big 3 do certainly get away with more and yes that includes all of the big 3 including the 2 that people here like to think represent something else

I think nick does A LOT, and criticism is warranted as well as fines but he might also be talking about articles, media etc. Take for example tsitsipas over the last few months, I don't see pundits sitting around legit trying to diagnose him. I feel like when nick violates something they should just hit him with a fine right then and there or punish him right then and there and move on this, sort of laboring on what to do with him, whether he is good for the sport, the 1000 articles, retired players sitting around wondering whether he needs mental help etc is just too much. I'm all for help, but they are not coming from it imo from a purely i care for him way either

Apart from Fog, I can't think of any other player who is a serial offender on Nick's scale.
But tennis has had a long history of guys who were as bad or worse than Nick on court with tantrums and profanity: Nasty, Connors and McEnroe. All were far greater players than Nick has been, but of those three, only Mac ever was defaulted from a match for behavior and served a suspension.

Here’s the thing about Nick: His behavior is ridiculous. He’s ridiculous.

But he also shouldn’t be banned because he’s about the only interesting thing that the sport of tennis has now. His behavior is “charming” to many because tennis’s culture is so backwards and stuffy that any deviation from the norm seems refreshing. Nick’s a spoiled frat boy trying hard to be a bad—- (though I think part of it is he’s just unhappy inside). But people are just happy to see anyone rock the boat, so he’s popular.

Generally the buzz lasts for 2 rounds before he either loses or walks off citing some spurious injury. The worst thing that happened to Kyrgios was beating Rafa at Wimbledon in 2014. The resulting hype got to his head and it's affected his mentality because he thinks he's arrived when he is still on the road. At 24, he's achieved little compared to the great players like Rafa and Djoker who he likes to disrespect. He is on the path of a journeyman.

The best thing for tennis is for Nick to win the U.S. Open.
Would make things for more interesting to have a NextGen villain challenging Big Three.
Unfortunately, Nick has yet to show he has the talent to reel off 7 straight wins.

Back pedaling like the scared little Bi#*& he is. ATP and ITF should ban this tool for life and be done with it. He's not going to change and his behavior is deplorable.

I'm sorry but this is such a dumb post and is exactly what is wrong with the world. You think his bad behaviour is needed for the sport because it is a deviation from the norm and what the sport stands for? Tennis culture might need to lighten up a bit but Kyrgios is not the answer, he's the tennis equivalent of having a garbage truck in a formula 1 race. It's useless and won't ever win anything but because it's different and might one-time be interesting, it's good for the sport long term? Get out of here with your nonsense.
