Kyrgios: "Federer is the one role model I have"

Nick Kyrgios, who is playing in Kuala Lumpur this week, says he loved watching Roger Federer as a child—and still does today.

“I remember watching him play,” Kyrgios told reporters at the tournament. “I still watch him a lot when I’m in my room doing nothing. I would just go on YouTube and watch him. I think he’s the greatest of all-time.

He’s the one role model I have—off the court as well—because of the way he carries himself, helping people.”

I'm guessing he admires his play & not his persona (or he would not wear that follower earring-"I'm cool") . Fed has always demonstrated his maturity, even in his youth; but especially as a Champion.

You may have missed Federer's younger years if you call that version of him "mature"

It is good to have a role model when youre young but in a few years Kyrgios himself will be a model to other aspiring young players.

Judging by his behaviour I'd have guessed Novak is his role model. ;)

hehe, just making a dig at you !

Let's hope so, however he's got a lot of work to do on his attitude. That said, Hewitt had a really s****y attitude in his earlier days too, and as an Aussie myself struggled to warm to him. Over the years, Hewitt matured, gaining respect from his peers and fans alike, and has now become a role model esp for the younger Aussie guys in the DC squad. Will Kyrgios learn? Time will tell.

He should learn how to control his aggression from Federer and try to be passive aggressive like Federer (till ~2011) instead of being overtly aggressive and getting himself in trouble.

Probably his PR told him to say something like that, I don't think he gives a damn about it.This statement sounds great ,because we all know who Federer is , what he presents in tennis and to tennis fans all over the world.

More mature than Kyrgios.

He was more a headcase than a dbag.

There were times where he did come off as a bit arrogant, but he was winning everything, so it's hard not to come off that way when you are having so much success.

However Fed never said any of the **** Kyrgios did, nor did he pull outrageous or outlandish antics on the court.

I totally agree, but I think Fed and DelPo totally respect each other.
Hasn't Fed been the only player to send him something like a "get well note" when his wrist first caused trouble?

Fed should have taken that final in 3 though...

That was awesome, but you know he was totally right though. I mean he was already at the chair by the time Del Potro signaled for a challenge. It really was pathetic for the chair to allow that challenge.
Anyone with the slightest capacity of understanding what was actually going on there knows that Fed was indeed completely right. The rant wasn't at all directed at Del Potro (who indeed took his sweet time), but for 100% at the ump.

Fed and Del Potro get along real fine, if not rightout friendly with each other, as could be noted at about every match they played.

Darn, I miss Del Potro.

Exactly.
He was completely right, and angry Federer is hilarious, just the way he carries himself when p*ssed off is funny.
"Don't f*cking tell me the rules" - just beautiful.

Yeah, it was pretty funny - but I well remember that I thought, "darn, he's going to lose his concentration right there".
And eventually it was part of the reason why he ended up losing the match.

Not true. Kyrgios has always looked up to Federer right from his teens. He has said so in several interviews about how he thinks of Federer as his role model before he became famous.

No surprise.

More mature than Kyrgios.

He was more a headcase than a dbag.
Aside from the Wawrinka thing, what else has he done to warrant the dbag label?

For what it's worth, I don't think Kyrgios is that bad. He's young and of course he's going to make some mistakes.

Kyrgios seems to have trouble connecting the nice ideas in his head to the poor behavior of his mouth. Hopefully he'll connect those dots soon.
Like jm1980 said, the bloke is still very young, and might well have been affected by all of the (hype) media attention he's been getting as of late - either positive or negative.

Hewitt used to be a piece of work in his younger days as well, and he's dried up quite nicely during the past decade. I hope Kyrgios will follow suit, maybe even under Rusty's guidance.

Depends who you ask, I don't think Nadal fans like him. Have you seen Kyrgios complain about Nadal's timewasting on serves even when Nadal ain't playing him? It's happened alot this year when he has a go at the referee and mentions Nadal, I remember he was changing socks or something and the referee told him to hurry up, then he mentioned Nadal taking ages during his serves lol

Yes,that's why he is acting like a moron all the time.Probably he saw Federer do it!?
One thing is saying som
He can have Federer as a role model AND act like a moron. Those two are not necessarily connected to each other.

Just because he looks up to Federer, does not mean he has to be his clone.
Clone? He looks like totally different specie, monkey clone would be closer. If he does not want to be like him ,than Federer is not his role model, means he's talking bull .... If he could be polite and not primitive ,that does not mean he is Federer's clone, just normal human being.

Nike obviously instructed Nick to trot this out for public consumption.

Anyone who had Roger as a role model wouldn't have pulled the crap he did against Stanimal. I think Nike's behind this remark, not something Nick just came up with. Sort of like when Nike had Tiger sit in Roger's box at the USO and Fed followed Tiger around for some golf tourney. The press made up the lie, "oh, they're best friends!" when they never have seen each other since.

All marketing.

Kyrgios' role model has been Federer before he became famous.

He's worse than Fed was at the same age though. Not in terms of game, but in terms of attitude. I think he's got A LOT of potential, he just needs to learn to keep his mouth shut when things aren't going his way (Wawrinka incident).

I think there are a lot of similarities between Kyrgios and young Hewitt to be honest.

Federer is a square. Probably got bullied in elementary school, middle school, and high school.

Kyrgios should find a cooler role model.

classiness of Federer definitely did not rub off on kyrios

Kyrgios chose a good role model. If he had chosen say, Djokovic or Nadal, he'd have still chosen a good role model.

Needless to say, this thread has turned out to be disappointing in many unnecessary ways. At least it provides an interesting study for the human condition - just that the outlook is bleak and tragic.
