Lack of variety in modern tennis

Modern tennis has become a bit boring im not saying is totally boring but the tour needs variety as soon as possible, take in sample players like monfils, dimitrov, wawrinka, paire and kyrgios added a brutal fun to the game but before them in the 2000s the tour variety was insane on you had everything; Counter punchers as lleyton hewitt players who were walls and then started creating offense from the opponent momentum, Servebots as ivo karlovic and isner brutal players,Big servers (not the same as servebot as they have solid ground play) Like andy roddick, Spin grinders like kuerten and obviously nadal who were absolute monsters, Serve and volley like tim henman who was one of a beast also goran ivanisevic, Shot disruptors like stepanek, offensive baseliners like Agassi, gonzalez and delpo, All around offensive players like Federer and Safin and All around defensive like djokovic and murray who could anything on court to defense and then go to offense also trickshotters like monfils and brown. i know some players i mentioned where at their prime in the 2010s but that just shows how tennis become a unidimensional sport take in example now hard courts are slower indian wells is literally a slightly faster clay court, backdays we had variety like the difference between grass and clay was brutal and clay specialist couldnt be as good as grass now the difference isnt as big as it was ,and court play itself Grass rewarded Servebots ,Big Servers, Offensive baseliners, Offensive all around players and even shot disruptors Clay rewarded Spin grinders, all around defensive, baseline defensive now everyone plays the same in all courts and we lack variety thats why players like paire,Alcaraz and kyrgios are fan favourite take in example alcaraz he just doesnt play a boring baseline game he goes to the net he throws dropshots, slices, changes height instead of sinner who now and then drops a slice and goes to the net and im not saying nowadays players are bad because they are incredible brutal players sinner is a monster but it isnt as fun as it because nowadays are all offensive or defensive baseliners or grinders

The slowing down of surfaces has a lot to do with this lack of variety.

There needs to be a slight change in court speeds in order to encourage variety of styles.
Yes but the problem is that if they make the court too fast the points will be boring because it will end in 2 shots and too slow will also be too boring because the rallies will never have variety because slices, dropshots and net would be totally useless

Sampras v Becker and Ivanisveic finals in the mid90s at Wimbledon sadly changed tennis. Those guys perfected fast court tennis at their best but it meant very serve dominated contests that werent great optics for the TV audience that led to a fundamental change in the game to slow it down. While it seemed to have worked given a few years later the Federer v Nadal rivalry developed which obviously had a contrast of styles, it proved disastrous in terms of the games future development as basically every player ended up being coached the same way and now we see basically robots playing the same game with the exception of Alcaraz who is a bit of a throw back.
Also removing carpet courts indoors was a stupid idea.

exactly but even in the 80s and 90s you had guys like lendl, borg, wilander and agassi who were beasts in baseline

and the removing of carpet courts mainly was for safety reasons because it was easy to get injured there

The surfaces were never slowed down, the balls have changed, but that only does so much.

There’s more than enough ability for variety as you can see clearly with Alcaraz

The players are simply choosing the best weapons at the best times. We even saw Federer assimilate techniques from Nadal and Novak and they did the same with Federer.

The players, not the courts, have become more homogenous due to effectiveness of those plays/strokes.

I think tennis has not changed a lot since last 20 years. I mean from 2006 to 2025.

There is literally same level of variety today as exact 20 years ago.
It has change a quite because it used to have more variety because the players who played in the 2000s were coached in the 90s and when they arrived they had to adapt in any way as possible we get a slight golden era from 2007-2021 where Roger, novak and nadal played their games being so superior that it was everytime fun also the players who played in the 2010s were coached to play as the 2000s but now the 2020s players are coached just to get efficiency because of novak and im not saying novak changed tennis for bad quite the opposite novak make it a better sport and novak is one of my favourites players along with safin and federer but now every player nowadays is coached to play or like novak or like andy or like ferrer and the lefties like nadal and the tour is lacking variety for that because everyone play the same except some exceptions

Yes but i dont mean that the players should change their style i mean we should change ATP and WTA itself to boost more variety play and not every court was slowed down but most of them were slowed down because for example wimblendon grass change made it slightly slower we should only boost variety play like optimize it to let every player has it own style and not unreward other players for not being baseline grinders as 95% of atp tour today it should be alot more balanced

Federer due to his huge longevity is tagged with current players but his generation even had guys like Hewitt and Safin who were removed from top 2 spots before 2006. You can say that efficiency based tennis is new but this is exactly what Nadal Murray were also playing with. These three, Djokovic Nadal and Murray are among the best baseliners and percentage players of all time. In fact , current players like Sinner and Fonseca go for their shots far more than the old 3. Don't you agree?

I agree completely but my point is that we should change somethings to atleast more players like hewitt, safin and federer appear as only having nadals murrays and djokovics makes the game linear we should atleast reward all styles equally not in every court but even we should have court variety without making it impossible for players who style isnt as effective in other courts be considerable affected

We’re living in the Age of Optimization, where sports have traded beauty for brutal efficiency. It’s not about flair, creativity, or flow anymore. It’s about spamming the highest-EV play until the system breaks. Basketball is threes and layups. Football is analytics-driven 4th downs and pass-heavy scripts. Every move is calculated, every risk pre-modeled. The soul? Optional. Winning? Mandatory. Entertainment? Collateral damage.

i always think medvedev is the product of the system that cuts most of variety and he just styled his game to be the effective as possible
I like Medvedev, but i genuinely dont think in the 80s or 90s he would have made the top 50. Early on he had not a clue how to play Federer, and has looked equally clueless against an on it Alcaraz, basically any type of variety totally bamboozles him.

Spot on. You wont ever see a Brazil 1982 type team again at the highest level in soccer.

Exactly and thats whats it killing sport we are making everything a job and thats killing sports thats why ATP view rates decline and the UTS view rates are going to big levels because people dont want to see two guys playing the most robotic way a sport they want to see contrast, drama, dynamic exchanges, flair like the wall flair of novak the spin flair of rafa and the brutal attacking flair of roger

Yes basketball is good example. I think everyone is great shooter today and no role players are left.

Medvedev wouldnt be top 50 in the 90s thats true and the variety of shot totally anulifies his style because he grinds too much and forces the shots too much and when he is hitted with a cut of the rythm shot he is clueless on how to respond effectively

And thats why some people consider basketball is getting boring because back then you had brutal dunkers like vince carter and brutal shooters like steph curry now even the 7'3 guys are trying to be steph curries reincarnated and thats what is killing it we should boost and promote variety

I think social media is due for its own blame and accountability.

The people who are sharing that sports today are worse than last are very vocal. And we are getting hammered with how everything is worse now. Because on social media , hate sells .

Modern tennis is seen as increasingly one-dimensional and lacking the stylistic variety that made the sport more exciting in the past. In the 2000s, the tour featured a wide range of playing styles—like serve-and-volleyers, spin grinders, big servers, counterpunchers, and trickshot artists—making matches more diverse and entertaining. Today, most courts play similarly, and players tend to stick to baseline offense or defense, reducing the game’s unpredictability. Players like Alcaraz, Kyrgios, and Paire stand out because they bring flair and variety, which fans crave. The post isn’t criticizing today’s players’ skills, but rather the lack of stylistic diversity in the modern game.

Make surfaces a bit faster to encourage net play, eliminate the 2nd serve to do away with the servebots, make the serve box slightly bigger to tempt good servers to sometimes still go for it

Where’s Joan of Arc?

you couldnt have said it better

It's better now than it was a few years ago when Z and Med looked to be leading the tour down a very dark hole of everyone being a lanky big serving grinder, aside from them it was old Djokovic and old/injured Nadal, and then you had Tsitsipas in the mix trying his best with that awful backhand. Alcaraz and Sinner have upped the aggression and entertainment levels significantly from that point, and they are far more successful than Med and Z to boot, so hopefully things continue trending upwards and we get more young players who show skill and enjoyment in playing a more attacking style.

Don’t get me wrong I 100% agree with you that variety is highly needed, but I’m saying that the lack of the variety is not created by the balls or the courts rather it’s created by the players who are deciding to all play the same much like you find something in music, where everybody is just deciding to be the same because they feel that that’s the most successful path forward for them, regardless of the environment.

Think of it more as a cultural phenomena within tennis

Yes but the thing is how we can boost this variety then we need to find solutions to see how we can do it?

The courts and racquet technology absolutely played a part in everyone adopting the same style. If grass was still lightning quick and the poly strings weren’t around to generate insane spin, serve and volley would still be an effective style on fast surfaces. The strings, balls and court surface have basically forced everyone into playing exclusively from the baseline and playing low risk tennis. The fact that serve and volley is an extinct play style at the pro level is an embarrassment to tennis.

It's not simply the courts, but it's the racquet and strings that have shaped the modern topspin game. This makes certain styles of tennis a losing hand, so to speak.
balls balls and balls became ever fluffier as well. If THEY dont bring racquet head sizes down then 6.3cm balls will require more control and quality rather than sweet spot size.

Mannarino, Sock and Ramesh Khrisnan used 20-30lbs, Id like to see more of this but really 98sq inch max racquet size for 180cm with shoes on and 95sq + that height
or 2cm smaller balls to counter the sweet spot factor that allows anyone to hit anywhere on the frame for a winner. A slightly smaller ball will be harder to manipulate.

The fear of Servebots winning wimby like Goran, really scared the up-petty nosed snobs damaged tennis with fluffier balls, slower courts and not restricting head sizes
that allowed Nadal, Sinner and almost any pro to hit winners even when just shy from making contact with the frame.

The Ball size has a limit from 6.54-6.86 that allows 95+ frames to be easier for returning and bigger sweet spots requiring less accuracy from tennis players.
This lack of accuracy was helped when the ATP increased ball size/felt when Fedal won 8 of 9 masters as their eyes were supposed to be supreme to rest of the field.
Federer was truly the one who didnt benefit and could have won 30 majors even with that little 90 if his opponents had the 95 max limit for over 180cm height regardless
of arm, leg or neck lengths as momentum needs balance and vice versa.

Wouldn't it be great to see more players loosening the tension? Sad when you see guys playing with these insanely high boardy string setups and handcuffing their power.

Mannarino probably added 5 years to his career with his decision to loosen the tension and overhaul his whole game and equipment setup to avoid having to end his career after his injury.

I think this is easier with older stiffer frames and always possible with any PD due to its high ra.
Sinner has somehow got the ideal firm hoop and flexible throat by using this high tension but
It seems anything over ra66 can take lower tensions well except for the PAVS and PA98.
Its like its made only to accept higher tensions.

Either way the skills required to play with lower tensions is the key but definitely easier with an
extra hand on the backhand side. One could see how soft Fed had to slap his Neo BH
or it will just float out from the lower tension. I still wonder if he could have amassed even
more slams with the 90sq at lower tensions then progressed to a 93 then 95 than straight to 97.

I know I said a smaller ball but was wrong as it would make it even harder to put away volleys!
but with the open patterns would make it difficult to get the same ball control.
Im not sure what the RPM was with spaghetti strings back in the day when they got banned
but Bruguerra, Muster, Kuerten, Nadal, Alcaraz, Sinner and even Fed have made use of crazy rpm.

Totally agree. Many of the players' styles today are just cookie cutters.

That's why the OHBH players are a joy to watch.

It is pretty dire when someone is just willing to enjoy tennis with low level OHBH like Stef
yet I innerstand your frustrations and at least Alcaraz is there to mess things up with variety
and unnecessary over imaginative choices instead of being just clinical.
That is Carlitos only weakness, his creativeness can be his downfall as well when he should
sometimes just efficiently choose the direct choice. However he probably feels bored himself
with tv ad revenue assisted monotone tennis as all courts play the same plus slow balls.

Indeed. The age of the big serve pusher felt like the nadir. Especially on clay we have seen a revivial of variety but even on faster hardcourt more are attacking the net.

However the increasing dominance of the serve troubles me. Over the last decades fewer and fewer points were won by the returning player. Mensik seems like the new archetype.

With GMP we might also get the purest and biggest serve bot of recent memory. Nice from the French to close the roof for him...

They have made the sport easier to play, which has significantly increased the depth in the game. That's good for the health of the sport, but yes, robbed it of the same degree of variety. More to the point, made variety pointless, because it isn't of any great use. That's why Federer retreated to the baseline. If he'd carried on the way he started he'd have probably ended up like Feliciano or Llodra or something.

Yes but atleast federer knew how to construct a point and attack at the net constantly nowadays no player goes to the net that often and knows how to construct a point they are just basic exchanges thats why sinner always loses agaisnt carlitos because carlitos haves variety

Well said. I almost forgot that period or willingly cast the memory aside lol

Technique and teaching is increasingly becoming narrower. It's why the one-handed backhand has disappeared, even at a rec level (minus boomers who learned to play 40-50 years ago). Even today, I feel like most I play with competitively plays some version of Winning Ugly. Perhaps it's a byproduct of a digital era where it's easier for everyone to access the same sources of information rather than people developing styles in their own pockets and following local lineages.

I used to hate serve and volley tennis in the 80's and 90's because of the 1-3 hit points prevalent in Wimbledon especially but now strangely I would love a few players to bring that back in moderation just because there aren't really any variations in play.

You are so so wrong, all the surfaces have slowed down, since 2001, it has even been measured, more sand in the paint on hardcourts, and Wimbledon is 30 percent slower and bounce higher, they have actually changed the grass completely there.. even Federer said Wimbledon played like clay many days. The reason variety is gone is 75% slower surfaces, 25% poly strings. Both factors ruined tennis, they should not have changed both. If they never changed surfaces poly would still make returning easier, but one would also be able to serve and volley... such a shame..
