Ladies singles final

The last couple of games were very un -Serena like, there was very little of her trademark self belief or fight. Earlier in the match she needed more proficiency at the net to finish the points against an extremely dogged Halep who made 3? unforced errors for the match. Was she worried about firing up too much after the Osaka USO final? Her forehand played up again as it had in patches of earlier matches and Halep exposed her movement a bit.
What were your thoughts on the match and will Serena be back in the major winners circle soon/again? I think shell bounce back and at least equal Margaret Court in the next couple of years.

A sh*tshow.

One is spraying balls and the other one is putting balls back. Over in an hour.
Whilst her ground game was erratic today but I was astounded to see how bad Serena was at the net. Has she always been that bad at the net?

Serena played well from 0-4 down in first set to 2-1 in second set.

Simona upped here level at that time otherwise Serena could have come back.
Yeah Halep raised her level at the right moments, but Serena repeatedly coughed up unforced errors when she needed to apply the pressure. I guess thats what playing a human backboard can do to you!?

I think it (mediocre net game) was exposed more today than usual, the technique/balance has always been a bit suspect.

Her movement and balance would not not do justice to a local division four women's pennant player.

Her huge unforced error count were largely due to her age and being so unfit.

She might want to play next year in the veterans Wimbledon women's competition if there is one.

The only positive for her was the way she conducted herself in defeat, very gracious.

Halep- she just played absolutely stunning especially her defensive game.

Too right. A player so visibly unfit has no business winning grand slams. She did well in reaching the final, but I am not sure what it says about the current level of play in women's tennis that she did.

It really makes for pathetic viewing the way Serena moves around the court. It looks like some World team tennis level exho. Her serves and power ball bashing coupled with loud screams instill fear in the opponents.

I wonder who will she blame now. I guess it must be Fed's fault that she lost, cuz he is a rich white male.

She got completely owned today. Granted Halep was fantastic. Had her trademark defensive capabilities that forced Serena again and again to play one more ball, but also displayed an aggression she's never been known for in going for her shots and trying to end points. She served supremely confidently as well.

But Serena was trash. I mean she put 80% first serves in for the first set, and she lost by a double break! I mean what the hell was she doing? She missed a couple of absolute sitters too, I'm thinking particularly of the backhand down the line when she was forced to come into net. How do you mess that up that badly?

I find the Serena thing really interesting. At first I thought maybe time had just well and truly caught up with her, that going and having the kid and coming back at this age had taken too much of a toll. Yet now I'm not so sure it is physical, because she's still made these 3 finals playing some fine tennis at times. Is it mental? Is she struggling to get across that line as we've seen a couple of times from her before when chasing records? If it is mental she should conceivably be able to get over that hump at some point, but if it's physical then things are only going to get worse.

Fact is she's lost these 3 slam final to 3 different players, and she was comprehensively owned on all 3 occasions. Granted, they're all good players, 2 of the 3 very experienced players, but... I mean if she's sitting around waiting to play some scrub in a major final to tie or break the record then how much will the record really mean?

Serena's problem is recuperation.

The older you get, the less capable is your body to metabolize the lactic acid produced during efforts.

If someone pushes her hard enough for one set, her tank runs on empty afterwards.

She had to win 6 matches beforehand and her body hasn't recuperated as when she was 20.

But i think she can still win a slam for the next 12 months because there's simply no one to challenge her besides a few players themselves prone to mental lapses.

I'm far from being Serena's biggest fan, although just being fair to her probably puts me in the top 15% here.

She has been much more than just a heavy-legged ballbasher over the years, although she certainly has a huge serve and generates lots of pace from both wings. While not as lithe on the court as Venus, Serena has often been fairly fast on the court. At this point...not so much. But she wouldn't have accomplished all she has without being able to also construct points (which is easier with her arsenal of shots), have a solid understanding of the game, and move well.

Yesterday, credit Halep, who was moving beautifully, and doing much more than just retrieving. Not many players in the WTA can hit the kind of shots she did on the run. Simona was brilliant yesterday,

I think Serena will win one, maybe two, more slams.
