LOL. Americans love Serena. And its also natural for americans to support a canadian over a russian. As for Sharapova she is a *****. Most americans dont like her running around carrying torches for the russians in the olympics and kissing putins *** then coming back here and living the american dream. I would have much more respect for her if she hung out in Moscow or stalingrad. Actually I think most russians would to.

She is revered. Unless you live on another planet.
That only started in the last couple years. Mostly because no other dominant american on both the men and womens side has appeared she is the only one left haha. Early to mid career she didn't get much love.

Most american tennis players are more loved as they get older. Mac and Conners and Agassi are perfect examples of that. They were all very divisive when younger.

Could it be that the events in the Ukraine - and the way they're being portrayed as a West vs East thing again - are influencing the crowd to support all the other players against the Russians? I noticed a partisan crowd in favor of Wozniacki (against Sharapova) and now Bouchard. Is it a coincidence or are the Russians subtly perceived as a natural "enemy"?

Anyone notice a similar pattern in other matches involving Russians?
Bouchard has been marketed heavily to New Yorkers. She was on the cover of the NY Times magazine last week. Caroline has always been popular, people feel sorry for her being practically left at the altar, and she's running the NY marathon. That's my guess anyway.

I just realised that Peng has an amazing run so far. All wins in straight sets!

1r #56 Zheng 63 63
2r #5 Radwanska 63 64
3r #29 Vinci 64 63
4R # 15 Safarova 63 64

& Bencic who has been remarkable as well, it should a great QF.
That is impressive. Happy for Peng.

I know. This tennis board is not indicative of tennis in general. Just because a few commentators blow smoke up people's #$#@ doesn't mean the American public falls for it.

Love everything else you said too. Excellent post.

Statement in bold--accurate observations.

People always say hingis retired cause she could not adjust to power game. But then you see someone like krunic play junk ball and it can work if done right.

And yet you have no problem with Tommy Haas,Dimitry Tursonov,Victoria Azarenka etc. living in the US?

Azarenka seems like an error machine from the little bit I've watched.
Krunic is throwing her off with off-speed stuff, great defense, and great variety.

Krunic has hit some of the best drop shots in the women's game in a while.

krunic was 2 breaks down, and still got first set 6-4. anyone watching? azarenka look shocked.
Given Vika's year, it is not that shocking. She was 10-7 coming into the 2014 US Open. Vika is lucky to have made it to the 4th round. Losing to a qualifier the way she's played this year wouldn't be that huge of an upset in my opinion.

Hass is a US citizen. The other ones I have no idea about. I am just telling you how many americans feel.
Most Americans would know jack sh*t about her back story. Think of how many tennis players don't live in the place of their birth. Why the hell would she go back and live in Russia?

See how playing smart can work? Thats why I never felt Hingis should have given up. I know she was hurt alot but she could have still competed well.
Martina Hingis had the ultimate tactical game plan without the physical prowess to execute.

In terms of crowd reaction, to say that Sharqpova's lack of support is because of American hatred for Russians does not come close to meeting the smell test, because as you point out, hardly anyone even knows her back story. More importantly though, the USO crowds are very significantly international too, so American feelings won't even be that major a behavior.

The simple explanation is that Sharapova isn't a very likable player while Wozniacki is. More importantly Woz was the definite underdog.

They know alot of jack about her. Millions of them watched her running around at the olympics with a toruch making putin look good while she lives in florida and has for the last 15 years. You think americans dont see this? Ok midas. Its not just that. She isnt well liked in this country, I hate to tell you. People dont like her screaming, they dont like her constant bathroom breaks, they dont like her taking forever to serve and they dont like refs being scared of her to call her on it. Tennis fans are pretty smart they follow these things. Now regular people who buy her candy? Sure they dont follow her bs. But hell alot of people buy Kardashian products to.

Wozniacki is only likable because she hasn't been relevant in a long time though. When she was #1 and winning non-slam titles all over the place, she was probably the most hated WTA player...

Americans dont hate russians. They just dont respect Sharapova and all her bs which includes running around with torches for putin then coming back here and screaming her head off, taking 20 minute bathroom breaks at the same time crying about others who do. So everything adds up to someone who USA tennis fans aint to crazy about.

She's been voted the most popular non-American female athlete in America though...

now Azarenka look a bit like Sharapova. Screaming to herself to celebrate when opponent missing shots. not cool..
