Two of the greatest female athletes ever. One of them happens to be an all time great tennis player (Serena Williams) whilst the other happens to be an all time great boxer (Laila Ali). Who is the greater female athlete between the two in your opinion / view?

I know she was undefeated and everything, but I don't think calling someone an all time great boxer among females means very much, does it? What other legends of the sport did she beat? I'm not making fun, I genuinely have never heard of any real life female boxers outside of the Olympics, so I'd like to know. Serena's last decade of generally beating up on no hopers might not mean much, but she proved herself a genuine all time great about 16 years ago.

Now in the pantheon of great American female athletes I'll go with Caitlyn Jenner. Watching a woman beat the crap out of all those dudes in decathlon for like 4 straight years, and set the world record about 3 times was just awe inspiring.

Boxing has to be just about the hardest physical task you can attempt. I've never played tennis so hard that I wanted to pass out after 3 minutes, but I've definitely been there during sparring. Laila > Serena as far as athleticism is concerned.

Serena in this case. Laila wouldn’t be popular at all if it wasn’t for her last name. She also dodged Ann Wolfe and Lucia Rijker. If we go by pure overall athletic abilities (ignoring success in their respective sports or popularity) then maybe Laila comes out on top , she sure was a beast.

I seriously doubt female boxers are anywhere close to being the best female athletes. Boxing is not a very popular women’s sport and the competition is abysmal. In Germany there was a female Box champion in the 90s, Regina Halmich who had several title defenses against women who did boxing recreationally and were in their first or second professional fight when they already got a title shot against Halmich. The fact that there are several different weight classes and multiple different championship belts in each, makes it questionable in general how legit the title “world champion” really is (same as in men’s boxing).
Talking about the best (not greatest) female athlete of all times: Jackie Joyner-Kersee has a good case.
