Large Draw 4.5 NTRP Tournaments

Hi All

I'll be over in the states sometime between feb and april and really want to get bumped up from my 4.5 NTRP. To this end I'd like play a couple of 4.5 NTRP tournaments with large draws (32+ players) in addition to league play.

Could anyone please point me in the direction of some specific tournaments? Are there any "national" designated 4.5 tournaments at any time of the year? I'd be willing to travel almost anywhere to play.

In the mid-atlantic region, with which I am familiar, these sort of tournaments very rarely seem to attract more than 8 players.

March and April look at the Texas Section and the Corpus Christi and Houston (Coca Cola) Major Zones as they typically will have 32+ draws for 4.5 men. Outside of those do not expect much past 4-8 in a majority of tournaments.

If you hung out in Socal for those 3 months you could play a 4.5 tournament pretty much every weekend. Not all of them will be 32 player draws but I doubt any of them will get draws of 8 players.

The Houston Tournament changed their name from the coca-cola to the gallery furniture houston open. They brag that it is the biggest tourney in the country but I don't know if it's true. Last year they had 72 players in 4.5 and it was a 128 man draw. Good luck

HAhahahahaaa! Houston? Moz *loves* Houston! ;)

Thanks nocab - looks like a good tournament.

Topaz - I did chuckle when I read that!

Going to Nationals in Austin, TX. Want to tag along Moz? I however already have a doubes partner, so you dont have to suffer. Maybe you can find your old "mixed" partner.

March 8-12th I believe. Let me know. Maybe I can find a couch for you.

Hi mate - it's a possibility, whether I'm in the country depends on some external factors.

Can't believe you've dropped me as a partner already!!

As long as its not "internal" factors which include Topaz giving you more hard boiled eggs! I still get "flashback" smells.

Yeah, my doubles partner Frank (aka Big Frank) has relatives in Houston/Austin. I hated going to nationals last year all alone. So I asked if he would like to play doubles.

You should learn to enjoy the flashback smells as I won't be around forever!

I haven't had boiled eggs since due to the number of complaints I received!

Trying to get up to 5.0

Hi Moz,

Read a couple of your posts and only wish I had your time and funds to do nothing but play . . .

Try spring time in some of the larger (deeper) sections, Florida, NorCal, SoCal, Tx, etc. In NorCal you should plan on playing in the 5.0 divisions. After the main leagues start (Feb), even though there are tournaments every weekend, they usually have smaller draws and most of the real 5.0 players spend their time with team matches, leaving out the tournaments. Around here you really need to beat several actual 5.0 players to get moved up. If you're doing the senior circuit, look for the bigger ones (look on the USTA site for designations) with National implications. Unless you can soundly thump a few real 5.0, you're likely to stay a lowly 4.5. Best of Luck !

Thanks for the post mate. I've had a look at some of those sections and you are right, the draws look good. I am starting to come to the same conclusion regarding playing the 5.0's though. At the moment I have 24 months of tennis that I am trying to cram into 2008!

Moz, there's a 4.5 on Feb 15-17 at Treasure island near Tampa, it's called the Mike Alstott Foundation tennis tournament. I have contact info if you are interested.

also if you arein the tampa area in Feb, want to hit? I'm a true 4.5, got to QF of national public parks in 40's last summer at NYC.

Hi

Won't be in Florida in february unfortunately - this trip I may play one in Chicago if at all. Are you playing in it?

Would love to hit if I'm back down there. If only I'd had your contact details 3 months ago!

Thanks.

Hey mate, Yeah I'm from NJ just down here for a lil hiatus. keep in touch if you are ever in NYC/north NJ. mrbiofile@aol.com

think i will play this tournament at Tampa, it looks good, I've never played a Florida tournament yet. Cheers, mate

Good luck in the tournament - I will keep your contact details.

Is it on the clay? Are you used to clay?
