Larry David is a god.

I find him mildly amusing, have watched some "Honeymooners" episodes recently on a vintage TV channel and found myself thinking that Gleason was so much funnier than David in what could be called "the comedy of hubris."

Monty Python had two great seasons and two great films.

There are very few Fawlty Towers episodes as well.

I find that comedians are having to over-produce.

It ends up in 'mild amusement', as Ollinger has pointed out.

I am more inclined to value novelty, however, whereas most love repetition.

'For 40 years, the Israelites wandered in the wilderness, eating quail and manna'.

They weren't exactly slumming it if they were eating quail either.

It was flowing with milk and honey though.

30? Wasn’t it 40 years? 30 doesn’t have any meaning in biblical time.

That's pretty obvious really, but stereotypes are the life-blood of comedy ... as long as others are on the butt-end of the joke.

Such as what harmful stereotypes?

What are you talking about?

It's all wonderful entertainment, and it takes a rich tradition to another level. Who suffers?

Some are indeed above it. And the reason for that is ... power and influence.

People here are currently whining about media freedom, but they speak nary a word about Julien Assange.

Okay...?

No one's above it, tho'. I really don't get the outrage.

Gotta be able to laugh at ourselves, right?

Well, if they're "above it" (whatever this means to you), maybe they're not funny.

I know I probably wouldn't laugh.

So you have no acquaintance with the topic of 'taboo', which is all the modern idea of PC is for both the liberals and conservatives.

Conservatives don't want you to criticise certain groups, and the liberals have a different list. Hence, some jokes are proscribed.

This show goes back literally two decades now.

And it's on a channel for which subscribers pay.

I think half the beauty of it is how real it is. And the Murphy's Law stuff of course.

I get "taboo" and such, but I think sitcoms (and variants thereof) have radically different rules than the political sphere.

Bottom line: I don't find people who can't laugh at themselves amusing.

Almost all of the characters in Seinfeld can't laugh at themselves.

I think that was the point of the final episodes, if I remember correctly.
I never laughed at that show.

Just kidding. :)

I'm talking about real people; David is essentially parodying himself.

But anyway, the dysfunction on that show saved it. :sneaky:

Yeah man Fleabag rocks. Its well done and more than just comedy.
Showtime has/had a very similar series directed and starring Frankie Shaw, set in Boston and called SMILF. It ran for two short seasons in ‘17 and ‘18 and was very witty dealing with hard times for a struggling young female.

Looks like they didn’t renew for 2019.

Yes that is what I am saying
It makes Jews look mentally insane and weak
Relax! Larry makes fun of his crowd of encounters in a very equal opportunity way. There’s loads of other minorities he parodies along with himself...the softball team he plays on is multi ethnic, JB Smoove is black, Cheryl Hines plays his wife and all her relatives are non-Jewish.

I think you’re a little jealous he has made a persona out of his oddly similar background to yours and he is prosperously funny while you continue to amuse us for free with your UPS Store proprietorship kvetching.

Jason Alexander even told Larry David that the bris episode as written was anti-Semitic.
He has taken it too far.
Would be as if blacks danced in shiny shoes w watermelons. It’s just unheard of now. They wouldn’t do it and also not funny, it’s just terrible, horrible part of the past. In a few years Larry David shows would be seen as the same.
Italians in Italy thinks the Italian stereotyping in USA, the Italian Americans, are just embarrassing. Got nothing w Italian culture or people. When people in here now read read this they think maybe yeah right... but this is the truth. When saying like I do now, people say -but they are a bit like that. So, people get wrong ideas. But when you go to Italy you will see how things are and what people say about this stereotyping. Same for Jews in Israel. It’s just not funny.
I was so surprised when I saw and understood all the stereotyping and the misjudgements that follows particularly in USA.
It’s these silly stupid mob movies that make Italians suffer
Yes!
