Who is this fool? Women simply can't play 5 setters.
Larry Scott was the CEO of the WTA Tour until about March of 2009. Now I think he is the commissioner of the Pacific-10 Collegiate Conference

But where did you read that from. Obviously, your quote isn't exactly the way it was said..

Ex-WTA president.

Of course they can. Before 2000 the YEC final used to be best of 5 sets.I think the slam finals should be best of 5 but not the whole tournament.

Ok that confirms that he is indeed a fool ;)

That was one match per season and there is a reason they stopped that practice.

Women are simply physically incapable of playing 7 best of 5 matched in two weeks, and should not be forced to do that. It would be awful and torture for both players and audience.

Anyway this issue is settled. Women get equal money and that is fine with me. No need to start with this again IMO.

You got it from TF.com. Here is the link to the article. You directly got your quote from the TF post. Nowhere in this article is anything quoted saying that they SHOULD play 5 sets. He says he doesn't think they will, and it's not the best direction for the sport going forward. All he says is that the players are open to it if that were decided.

Men should get paid less than what Laver got paid in the old days because most of the tourneys are best of 3 with tie breaks.

So it's okay for women to systematicaly get paid the same amount while doing less work?

Glad that strikes you as fair. Probably matches your opinion on the draws.

Oh no. I can't imagine WTA players screaming left and right, going to five setters and me having to wait for them to finish for an ATP match.

Ah.

Sounds like the OP was intentionally misleading in order to spark another thread full of mindless misogyny.

Yeah.. Notice how after I quoted that, he never responded. He quoted the original post from TF.com. LOL

Let's get this straight :

In the real world, women don't get such luxuries. They have to perform the same amount of work as men do in their respective occupations in order to get paid the same. That means a women who works as a physician is going to have to put in 100 hours a week if she wants to make the same amount of money as a male counter part who also works 100 hours a week.

However, the reason why the WTA will not instate 5 setters nor will they decrease pay because :

A. Political reasons
B. Women are incapable of playing high quality tennis over 5 sets
C. Women's tennis just sucks in general; I don't want to see women on the court for 4-5 hours screeching and throwing moon balls at each other after the 3rd set because they are dying of exhaustion.

So, keep it the way it is right now.

On the one hand, it would reduce the injustice of "equal" pay, but from this fan's perspective (and, I believe, the majority of fans' as well), five-set women's matches do not make for a terribly interesting proposition.

I don't understand why some of you think that women are incapable of playing best of 5 sets.

There are plenty of women who run marathons and ironman tri-athlons.

Sure, most WTA pros today do not train to go 5 sets, but that does not mean they can't train themselves to go the distance in the future.

As a spectator,I would not mind if they got paid more than men, but on the condition that they adopt the doubles' scoring system of the regular tour season; sudden death deuce, champ'ship tie-break. So get off the court faster and we can move on to some real tennis

yesterday, i was on court 1, and ferrero and gonzalez played a brilliant 3 hour 5 setter, which finished just in time, light-wise.

if i had been unable to watch that to a conclusion because i had to sit through another 1-3 sets of kuznetsova and lisicki being unable to string 3 shots together i would have been furious.

Mindless misogyny? Most women activists I know demand equal pay for equal work. Since when is playing best of 3 set matches equal to playing best of 5 set matches?

It seems to me that the WTA is demanding equal pay for less work.

I do agree with a previous poster who suggested that it would be awful to have to sit through 5 sets of screaming and unimaginative play.

They should get less money and please no 5 setters, best of three in the current field is already a pain to look at. As much as I dislike the Williams sisters, they can play tennis, but the rest, yugh..

Enough is Enough!!!!!!!!!!!

I disagree with all whats expressed in this thread.Under my point oif view matches (men and women alike) should not be longer than 3 sets and the final set of a match should have also its tiebreak.
A five setter match is equal to add 45 extra minutes to a soccer game and I think no soccer fan would like it...
I think sports must have a reasonable length and five setters is definitely too long and it gets unexpectedly long in the last set with (not uncommon)two digit numbers results...
