Bring it on!

You forgot AO 2007 defending champion, AO 2018 defending champion. Didn’t drop a set. Still haven’t drop a set yet. Nadal lost in the QFs in 2007 and then here in 2018.

In 2010 Rafa won the next 3 slams, sweeping the clay season.

In 2018... surely he won't repeat that.

Fed dropped the first set in the QF against an immensely hyped opponent (Davy then Berd now) but cruised home.

But I'm talking about things that happened when Nadal retired in the quarterfinals of the AO.

It's also bizarre that he retired two times in Grand Slam matches in his entire career, and both times were in the quarterfinals of the same Grand Slam

Davy had won WTF in 2009 beating an immensely tough field (including Federer, Nadal, delpo , soderling) and Doha (Fed, Nadal).
AO 10 was probably his best chance to win a slam and he was playing well enough to do so until Federer decided to spoil his party.

davy dominated fed in the 1st set, was up a break and nearly a double break in the 2nd set, before Federer pulled it back.
The 4th set was played at a ridiculously high level by both.

That match and the berdych match this year are not comparable, IMO. He didn't exactly cruise in the davydenko match. It could've gone 5 sets.

And then Federer will win the AO and from then on fade away into oblivion until winning Wimbledon in 2020 under a closed roof?

There is reason to worry. The Slam totals were 16-6 after AO 2010. Those are 20-16 right now. 2010 brought Nadal in Slam race. If he repeats it in 2018, he probably gonna finish at the top given small lead Fed has now unlike 2010 (10 vs 4).
