Lats sore from push-ups & dips

I'm getting back into shape and oddly enough my lats are always sore the day after doing push-ups and dips. For the push-ups I'm only doing 3 sets of 12 reps, and for the dips I'm doing only 3 sets of 12 reps (with weight assistance, not entire body weight). Yet after just these sets, my lats are the thing that hurts the next day, and not so much pecs or triceps.

Improper form? Just pathetic weak lats to start with? Any ideas?

Your lats are worked and more so depending on your form (where your arms are in relations to your chest) Further apart more lat work. And more prone to feeling it with those reps.

I returned a few months ago to working out and did literally the same thing; same pain. I rarely feel pushups and weight assisted dips in my chest unless I do many until muscle failure.

Ok so arms in closer for less lat work & more focus on triceps and chest. I thought maybe I was going too low on the push-up too.

That would be the infamous serratus anterior. It's a major scapular stabilizer in push patterns. It's location mimics LD soreness. The Latissimus dorsi is a relative antagonist tothe pushing musculature, therefore is electrically silent in push ups, etc...

Go surfing!
After 25 years of 4 days a week surfing, my lats never get sore unless I paddle a shortboard for 3 hours straight nonstop.
I've never done less than 12 dips, full weight on hands.
But I've been the worst pushup'er ever for most of my years.
OTOH, I recently did 12 EXTENDED PUSHUPS in a row, without a break.
